  1. had three this year that the ratchets were broken. Prob from some of the bad storms we had and the tree swaying. Have also found them before where squirrels had chewed the straps. I ALWAYS put a backup one on each stand as well and check each time I go up.
  2. might try that lower prescription idea. But only prob is I dont have an old pair and ins wont pay for another to be made. But it might be worth asking the doc about - thanks
  3. I only have three pins and would think I would still have the double vision for however many pins there is. And have a large peep as well. thanks though very much, trying to figure it out. Gonna do some shooting today and see how it goes with/without glasses.
  4. I am planning on quartering it if its in the woods a ways esp. Dont really want to have a rug or anything made so quartering might be the way to go. Also one of the spots i am thinking about trying involves a boat ride. So would be easier to maneuver for sure. I have a deer cart also , they sure are handy for deer. One of the guys I am hunting with for an early bear trip asked " well if we get a bear whats the plan?" Told him we would make one if we get a bear! doubt we will have any action but cant wait to go. We will get some fish in the morn and then have a good sit in the eve and have rifle just in case we see one.
  5. Nice buck for sure. Hope you get to see him with weapon in hand. Wonder what the other one is ?
  6. the double vision for the pins is a def problem. Maybe I can wear glasses while in the stand and have a laynard on them to take off to shoot. Cause can see better for deer coming etc. Didnt have glasses last year and got them this year for driving and hunting cause my distance vision was a problem. But still dropped one with bow, one with crossbow and one with the gun. Its just my vision is so much better if I could just get rid of those double pins. Would a clarifier work for that? I see the pins fine , just have double pins. And i close my left eye to shoot.
  7. Just got some glasses for the first time in 23 years. Had lazer eye surgery a long time ago but must be my lasers wore off cause i cant see like I used to, so got some glasses. They are for distance and am having a problem with the bow. When i look thru peep I am getting 2 sets of pins.......so I choose the brightest ones. Not a good issue to try to figure out when that buck walks into range. Like the glasses for the better ability to see distance and the crisp pic, but might not bow hunt with them. Dr said I would prob need bifocals soon as well. Damn getting old sucks. Any tips or anyone have this same problem. Was hoping that the glasses would help with crispness of vision for my 30+ yard shots but now I have another problem with the double pins.
  8. def a nice feel to the morns. Also am actually seeing more deer out in fields too. They also like the cool weather. A down to the last 2 peices of venison breakfast sausage, so must be season is close. Was outside this weekend and a flock of geese went over on a cool morning and yup ..... that did it! lol
  9. amazing there are lots of you folks that have bear pics on your cams. Wish we had more around here. Pulling mine this weekend. Nice bunch of deer there!
  10. Venison Jalepeno sausage and cheesy grits with cornbread crumble.......and a hopeful pup! lol
  11. well too much food might be a good thing late season esp. You might draw from other properties too.
  12. that green plot looks so good that I would make a bowl of salad to go with those backstraps standing there!
  13. the processing is so much part of it. Me and a buddy come up with different things to try every year. Last year it was jalepeno brats (awesome) and made some summer sausage and perfected my burger making. This year am going to try cracked pepper sausage. Have learned not to cut up the backstraps into steaks but leave them in 10 inch sections - they cook better - more tender - then cut into steaks if want after they cook and rest.
  14. anyone use the grim reaper bloodsports cut on contact heads? - been thinking of trying them out. I like the element of having a fixed head and a mechanical. I have shot Rage and the 3 blade grim reapers.
  15. i should be seeing treestands on every tree in those pics as well! Nice Buck for sure!
  16. always butcher your own if you can! of course they skim. And you never know if your getting your deer or one that sat in the sun etc. I took a couple of deer in years ago and every peice had to get the bone dust of it so I didnt chip a tooth. I think its part of the process and I enjoy making my own cuts and ideas. i make stew, roasts, cubed steaks, burgers, sausage ......
  17. its not an eclipse! its the US death star moving in over N. Korea!
  18. have done it each of the last three years. They send it to me in the mail every year. I always keep a copy before i send back , its interesting to look back on what you saw and where in the season. I do wish it was split a little different - cause you cant report more than one location in a day. And I often hunt one spot in the am and a different one in the pm.
  19. Bacon Jam on them sounds great - I make that as well for French toast , but bet it would be good on the burgers too! great idea - will try it. And def love the vaccuum sealer!!! I usually make the burgers ahead and then put a peice of tin foil in between the patties. Then put them on a cookie sheet in the freezer for a couple of hours before sealing them, that way they retain the shape.
  20. This last season made the best venison burgers yet. Bought a 3lb pack of bacon pieces and ends at the Walmart and ground that in with 10lbs of venison. Added in some just basic hamburg seasoning with onion powder, garlic powder, pepper.... wow are they ever good and juicy! Throw some monterey jack on and pretty much the best thing ever... Anyone else have some good ideas for venison mixes? Also very set on breakfast sausage (get a container of sage breakfast sausage spices from the Amish store) and Venison jalepeno brats! ( again - onion and pepper sausage spices from the amish store, diced jalepenos, green tabasco, 1/4 of a beer) But for the sausages - I mix 4 lbs of ground pork to 6 lbs of venison. And buy natural cases for the Brats! Just those burgers were so good this weekend! Hit the spot.
  21. nice buck! pulled my cams and nothing bigger than a six and a very small 8. Hope you and your son score on that one while out hunting together. Would be a great season for you both
  22. I took it with a buddy and he didnt get to practice much before the class. When he shot he took the horns off the 3D target and the guy said "guess you like to hunt does!" and he still passed. lol
  23. I took mine years ago at the Camden rod and gun club. We did shoot bows at the end but they didnt test anybody but just offered tips which I thought was great . They helped people out with bows and shooting etc. I would say bring it along and get some practice in at the very least. usually they also get you outside to do a blood trail instead of sitting as well. Have fun
  24. good for you!! Im down 14 lbs myself and have a goal of 10 more by Oct 1st! A good goal is 1.5 pounds a week. And the good news is venison is high in protein and low in calories! My cheat is weekend breakfasts! I have a reasonable but good breakfast on the weekend. Its my thing. But it seems to be working ! Wild blueberry pancakes (only 2) and venison breakfast sausage tomorrow. Then out the door to put up a stand on some new ground! gotta work it off!
  25. would love to get some bears on trail cam, wish we had more around here
