Think deer keep'em on all year here.

Well, if you drop'em in October, don't have to worry about sheds now, lol

New planting....
landtracdeerhunter replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Planted switchgrass next to the corn a couple years, grew to 5' tall. The deer ate it when young, and liked the cover. Stood rather well. Looks to have inproved the soil adding organic matter. Sun hemp looks like a better choice. -
Anyone order trees for spring?
landtracdeerhunter replied to SplitG2's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Good idea on the hazel. Never give them a thought. I tend to use zone 5, as we tend to run colder, being away from the lake a ways. Rather play it safe, then sorry. Chinese chestnut sounds like a safer choice, by what I've read. Funny you mention Quince apples. Old time apple. Got a big old tree on the farm, the deer don't leave an apple on the ground. Always produces every year. Most people I've talked to, have never heard of them. This tree is bird planted, but looks like original. Sounds like your place is a ideal habitat for wildlife. -
Anyone order trees for spring?
landtracdeerhunter replied to SplitG2's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I'm torn between planting American or Chinese Chestnut. trees From what I have read, the fungus is still in the American strain. Only have room for a half dozen trees, so what to do? Going with a few Red Mallberry trees also. Always was going to plant some, for some reason, never doing it. -
Yes, welcome. We run black and tans back in the 70's. Had one dog that would run quit until she tree. Best dog ever, and always come home with coon. Other dogs, had to leave the hunting coat, but never for her. We spent many a night in the woods. Those were the days.

Anyone counting down the days till May 1st ?
landtracdeerhunter replied to HopkintonHunter's topic in Turkey Hunting
Don't know if anyone's as bad as this, but my calls are next to my bed. When my wife not expecting it, I let out a few yelps with the old box call, lol. She laughs it off. -
The fill rate is averaging about 9 % in this area. This is one of the lowest in the state. DEC want to take more deer out of your area, but not happening. Think they issued 17000 DMP, this past season. That number is sure to go up this coming season. Talking with a few people from there, some harvested more, some like your season. The deer are there, seen them in my travels around your town. Bet those orchards had deer in them during bow.

landtracdeerhunter replied to HopkintonHunter's topic in Turkey Hunting
Here it is middle of Jan. already. If the months go as fast as deer season flew by, it'll be here quick. Getting new chokes for the Rem. 12 and 20 ga.. Can't wait to get out to target practice. -
Really nice mounts, bubba. The deer picture is a great idea. Thanks for showing.

Winner receives $150 gift certificate from the sponser. To bad he didn.t introduce himself, before most everyone jumped on him. Agreed, very tough crowd here.

The fence is 2- 4 ft sections of 6 x 12 inch mesh stock fence, one on top of the other. 2 or more strands of barb wire are added 10 inches apart, at the top, for a total height of 10 feet. The cost is about $ 4 / linear foot for material & installation. Chromeslayer, take a ride down 31 east, to Medina. They are showing up in Orleans County.

So much for the DEC burning law......
landtracdeerhunter replied to growalot's topic in General Chit Chat
Maybe should of called local law enforcement. They could of called fire Co., put the fire out, and give him a ticket for open burn. -
Welcome to the forum. Congrat on the deer harvests. Nice to see a father, son together with some very nice deer.

Road kill law
landtracdeerhunter replied to Single_shot's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I think all big game NY road kill need to be tagged, by law enforcement. Does anyone know if it applies to small game and trapping animals? Anyone know a link? -
Went to Dicks in Greece, over the weekend. They have good selection of the scent proof cloths, at 50% off. Good selection of tree stands, some marked down, and limited mark down on guns. They also have a limited supply of help, which can be expected after Christmas. One cashier and 15 minute wait. Watch the Giants swabbing Antlanta, so all wasn't lost. The other general item selection is alot lower in inventory.

Pond Building
landtracdeerhunter replied to The Engineer's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Some friends of ours, just dug a pond. They had to have an Eviormental Impact Study done before the first shovel full of dirt was moved. They also couldn't transport any dirt off their property. The last may have been a local code. -
before and after.....
landtracdeerhunter replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
A dollar a pound, to bad the whole lot wasn't missmarked, what a buy. Do u think the yield on the corn was good enough? -
Mounted my 8 pt from last year and.....
landtracdeerhunter replied to First-light's topic in Taxidermy
Very nice mount. The kIt looks so much better than the less expensive ones. The rivits really dress it up. Thanks for posting. I'll be getting a couple from Cabelas. Want to make my own, that day hasn't come, yet. -
People, I thought the idea was to encourage young hunters into the field. This is not the way. We've all been there, a bad shot is always a possible outcome. How many young readers are you influencing here. We want to encourage young peoples posts. This can be a great learning experience.

Never been to a BP store. Always shop the sale items on line and feel I got good deals. What spoiled me was when we went to Cabelas in Hamburg, PA. Took 5 1/2 hours to get there, and 5 1/2 hours to get out of the store. The way the store looked inside took my breath away. Think I took 100 pics. Well worth the trip.
