  1. the difference is most of the deer out west that are reported sre thru guide services. 95% or more of mag articles are about a buck killed on outfitter lease. the pros have multiple farms they own or lease for their tv shows. the outfitters push putting them in the book or at least publishing the scores. that culture makes a big difference in reporting.
  2. i find its not how slow you move its how ypu use the treeain and cover to conceal your movement. walking thru an open woods is not what you wamt to do .following depressions using a ridge to just peak over and scan an area where only.your head is visoable from below. or folowing the down wind side of a thicket and peeking around bkind curves in trail are much more productive.
  3. few of these could of been on cover of a magazine all ny deer.. https://www.newyorkupstate.com/outdoors/2017/10/big_upstate_ny_bow_bucks_shot_during_the_2017_fall_season_photos.html
  4. other states have mandatory deer checks and are usually measured there and then suggested for entry.. nys call it in.. 50% or less even do that.. hard to keep a big buck private in another state becuse its seen by several people at check station
  5. either of these wpuld make pope and young. the buck on left was shot by a friend and we never recovered it.. the other i assume died of old age because i never saw it on fb or in a magazine...lol
  6. boone and crocket i will say no . but pope and young many many many in ny are never entered. again different cultures. the books are stacked from bucks since late 80s.. but many many have been taken and never entered there is no reason to in nys.. win a classic out west for 10k or an atv or a truck..averge size of farm in nys 80 acres. iowa 400+ hunter densities are different . but you can kill a pope and young with same sucess rate as a midwest state in ny.. remove preserves in ny amd you ll understand why big bucks show up out west outfitters have 100k plus acres to push.. nys none at all in most productive southwesten ny. ...
  7. small outfitter? the only outfitters i know in ny are in the dacks.. mid west outfitters have hundred of thousand of acres in farming areas. with narrow wood lots.. different hunting. and ive seen 40 or more posts of 130 plus bucks on social media this year in ny already but only 2 or 3 that have shown up on nyantlers page or nybb page..again differnet culture look at school closings in big buck states that close for deer season.. look at same in ny.. 0... i go to ohio all the time see the average guys bucks..they are same as ny. 120 to 140 in for the big ones average. but there are a lot less hunters per acre there.
  8. you have to enter them.. ny does not have a culture of entering bucks.. i have 2 that would.make pope and young and they arent entered.. i see many post of bucks that would make book never entered..when your fall economy is based on deer land leasing and outfitting you make sure every client buck is entered .. they have deer classics with big prizes that people bring heads to to get entered... different culture. i see the same buck from kansas or iowa in 20 different magazines my neighbor whos in his 80s has a dozen thay would make book.. none scored or entered... im sure that story is repeated many times over in ny as it only cost you to enter the books and no one here wants you to know where they shot their buck...
  9. yes neither do the tv shows .main reason people believe all the big bucks are out west.. we kill 95% the same size bucks here as they do there..
  10. gross maybe lot of deductions on it. as typical
  11. net will be high 130's gross 145 or so
  12. using tree type id from ariel i would actually try the drainage between 1 and 3. young forest in 3 would be a good startinghb point going to the more mature woods in area 1.. the drainage will be used as travel coriodor
  13. bump deer walking in the dark.. i also suggest clearing last 50 yards or so of trail to your stand. some middle of the day to make the last 50 yard very quiet and learn to walk with out usuing a flashlight .. simple trimming of limbs and clearing a trail will let you walk quiet (you know your off trail when you crunch leaves or brush limb tips)
  14. this by far is worse regulation in nys. you can hunt turkey 1/2 hr before sunrise and same hold for ducks/ geese before and after..you have to be able to see a beard or identify species but cant tell a deer or if it has antlers?? rules are rules but i will say this is a very poor one.
  15. very good work, impressive
  16. i have 2 pair , greem mountain and bearpaws, ash frames leather web. i stay away from the modern neoprene and metal frame.on purpose they just dont sound natural .. scrape a log or on crusted snow.. like nails on a chalkboard to my ears .. a clunk of wood on wood us just a falling limb to a deer imo
  17. its a good spot. apple tree at 50 yards and corn field at 60.. had to make a rule years ago as we decimated a flock of turkey on the lawn at lunch time.. fortunatly i had enough shot guns for everyone. but in hindsite the rules came into place..
  18. this one is a bush light drinker.. lol as for wings i cant say but he drives a race car pretty well..
  19. so sunday afterneoon after watching deer feed under an apple tree on the edge of my lawn . the youngest hunter in camp wanted to hunt off the deck of the house .i declined and said we would put up a stand 20 yards or so behind apple tree. ( camp rule have to be 65 to hunt off deck and 70 to hunt out of the hottub) while hanging the stand we kicked out a few deer that were bedding 30 yards behind apple tree. so stand was hung and he sat in it at 130 pm at 2 pm he missed a doe at 22 yards deflection off limb clean miss.. we convinced him deer would be back there so at 330 he went back in stand. at 5pm 5 doe and fawns came back in to apple from a standing cornfield. he gets another shot and hit a doe at about 30 yards. i get texts to help him track.. i told him to wait id be out at dark. another hunter in camp and him track doe 70 yards or so and blood has reduced to a drip. again i tell them to wait and come in and have dinner and we will look after. grudginly theu come in. we go out after dinner and can only advancd track anoither 15 yards or so. i call it off and tell him ill look in am in better light. i look for 2 hpurs next morning and cant advance blood and limit body serch area to about a 5 acre block. no luck. at 9 am i get a call from the oldest hunter in camp whos 70 and has bad knees so i go help him look for doe he just shot.. tons of blood and deer turns away from a deep ravine and we find it next to atv trail oly 80 yards or so from his stand. i gut it for him and we get it out and up to the barn to hang.. hes attaching his tag and im inside getting cleaned up. he came in and said we ripped a big tear in hide when we dragged it ovet a log i broke a limb off of to get it to trail... so i go out and look and its not from a log but from the young bow hunters shot the evening before.. !!!!! the deer was walking normal and the way it lay and way we rolled it to gut it we never saw wound nor did he from his stand.! so. the mystery of the wounded doe is solved amd ill let the veteren hunter teach the young boy how to shoot!! lol
