  1. some young oaks 10 in and under are heavy this year.. the mature reds are bare.. few spots of apples around in clusters of trees, no where near the 30 acres of apples last year.. have stands moved and situated accordingly.
  2. thats a good mix though the clover will be better in the spring
  3. that planting is a 1/2 acre on the way to a 5 acre cornfield.. its a travel coridor that produces consistantly.
  4. clover and purpletop turnip.planted about 2 weeks ago

    Bow blind

I've used a homemade blind made from artificial christmas trees. never wears out and they were all free roadside pick ups... bend the limbs anywherebyou want for a shooting hole. get one in early usuing haybales or what ever you want it will work fine and free is best!!
  7. 1st there is no hunting season every year till its voted on. so lifetime really isnt your lifetime its void if there is no season (and one day they will vote no) that being said if you hunt and enjoy it and hope to do so for a long time buy it those turkey tags you dont hunt maybe one day you will...same with fishing... so hope the legislators keep voting yes...

    Pine/Cedar

try larch the board will have the reddish hue of cedar and its affordable... buch better than pine
  9. I don't know where or in type if terrain you hunt but a good bullet placement can turn bad with a goldenrod stem.. all I am saying is for 200 yards and under there are better calibers available than a .243 For those that have used them for years and swear by them i can show you guys that swear by a .223 Or even 22lr the caliber doesnt matter as much as experience.. most guys do not shoot target or practice much before opening day, let alone practice at game. I larger caliber for a new/novice hunter is more ethical in my opinion. As experaince and confidence allows you to take shots some would deem unethical to them.. what's an ethical shot 20yards open field? Ethics are a personal choice. But you can't kill them if you don't pull the trigger..... tracking skills a a vital part of any hunting.. a larger wound from a bigger caliber on a good shot gone bad is much more ethical than a pin hole from a good shot that was off just a little... that said if you want to hunt with one fine but be proficient with whatever cal you choose.. and if your really that great of a shot give up the Shotgun and bird shot and use a .243 For birds......!
  10. Clover is a slow grower and will be best next spring as it prefers cooler temps and wetter soil. If it gets a lot of sun that is good but if it is dry alfalfa would of been a better choice. Clover doesn't need nitrogen and brassica does.. as temps cool it will grow more and faster.. unless its getting overgrased now. Did you make a utilization cage?
  11. Been hanging and trimming out stands for over a month
  12. i always like how everyone says wait for a perfect shot, perfect bullet placement... its a rare thing when actually hunting. heck .22lr kills polar bears.. but i prefer a margine for error built in... will a .243 work yes, i've seen it drop many deer, i have also seen deer hit with a marginal shot leave no blood trail and lost with many calibers, but more with a .243 than others..small hole, and if hits bone its bad news. i have also seen it not penetrate to the body cavity on a good size bear just thru fat and hide and hit rib..done. was it the wrong bullet maybe shot was 20 yards.. just with bear more common i think something a little bigger with more penetration would be prudent. As for ethics i wouldnt try a shot on a bear with one or anything but a broadside shot at a big deer. i am not impressed with entry/ exit holes i have seen. and ethical shot at a 1/4 deer is done all the time. like i said earlier most hunters do not shoot anywhere near enough
  13. if your only shooting 200-250 yards, why not a 30-30, 45-70,.444,35 rem? big bullet lots of knockdown and designed for that range? like was said earlier shot placement is everything. unfortunatly most people do not practice shooting anywhere near enough,or they suffer from a form of buck fever.. i'd rather work in a margin of error with rifle selection, and while the big 30 cal rounds are great longer ranges at closer they tend to be overkill. most guys i hunt with after starting with 300 win mags, 270's, 264 mag have all switched to 30-30 or 45-70,or 35 rem. the distances being shot consistantly 50-150 yards in the wood with an ocasional 200 yard if on a field edge.
  14. living where i hunt, i had to come up with a rule of no shooting deer on the lawn or the guys would never get off the porch.
  15. fine round for deer, seen it kill lots, little underpowered for bigger game if a bear happens by.
  16. nice could be same little guy i've been getting, i know you hunt pretty close to me. and they have a pretty big range
  17. take the farmers advice where they enter and exit the field and head into the woods 50 yards. look at a map on google, or my topo. patches of woods left in farm field usually have water in them, ditch,or stream. if you find a crossing in the woods there is where i would start. i would be great to walk around and find nuts/apples but its getting late in the season for that. best done in winter after season. the logging road may be useful for access in to your stand area. if your set up and deer keep moving 50 yards away every day move your stand. personally id start with the topo and look to see why the woods were left and not cleared for farming. raviines, possible. then move to habitat type mature woods against younger brushy growth is a good seam/ edge to hunt as well. the woods doesnt sound to big so scout smart using maps and photos , confirm with a visual inspection hang your stand and get out. then hunt smart when you do hunt it.
  18. you can shiphides to a comerical tannery anywhere. a much better product than self or local tanning. Many taxidermists use comercial tannerys as the end product is much better and the regulations on tanning chemical is cost prohibitive for most taxidermists, or they use a less effective method.
  19. well most big box store want to sell at a certain price, even home depot for example, a cub cadet there is not the same from a cub cadet dealer.. even with the same model. dont believe it try comparisons..kubota has a big box line, and a dealer line same models much different quality. many big highend bow manufactures do not want to be associated with an inferior line ..they make 1 the right way.
  20. i'm with doc, i hunt from home, maybe 15 min one day ( got one of my best bucks in 10 minutes) or 4 hours, whatever i have time for or feel like..
  21. you pay either way, if you dont get one the give you a preference point
  22. heard of black (Melenistic) white, albino, piebald, im sure silver is a possibility but must be rarer than all the others
  23. its a yearling buck, many do not have brows 1st year...if you can pass deer for 3-4 years getting the same deer on camera with exactly the same horns, then you could think about cull buck.. in nys 99% of all deer are killed before you can determine what they would grow into.. nothing should be culled per say before 3.5 or 4.5 ...
  24. 15 Or 16 in spread, mass is smaller than you think velvet is long. 8 In tines. Maybe 136 gross. Some deductions side to side 130-132 .
  25. i was recently asked for the best advice i could give a new hunter as i was best hunter he knew. I said put time in, not so much all day, but any time you could every day, a 2 hours sit in the am and 2 hour or hour inthe after noon every day will teach you more than a all day 1 day sit. I'm sucessful as i put in weeks of hunting not a weekend. Any thoughts?
