  1. The problem is with nice weather the "cut corn and soybean fields" will be plowed under as farmers want to get a jump on plowing... and yes our season has always been set at the end of breeding season, just when spring is late the hens dont start laying saving the sperm till the time is right, so sometime late spring is good , this year full foliage is possible along with warmer temps making it harder to hear/ see birds as they will lounge in the shade when to warm out, probably be action 1st half hour of light then squat at it will be 80 by 9 am...lol
  2. owl hooter or coyote howl at last light...
  3. yeah when i was that age my dad tried to get me a 20 or 16 but i wanted to be like dad!!! shoot a 12 with light trap loads a few times... slip in the turkey round and she'll nver know the difference when hunting
  4. try a local mill they wil lbuy it and have someone do it.
  5. A twelve year old may be able to shoot a 12 guage, just sight it in with him/her withlight 2 3/4 target loads. then switch to 2 3/4 high brass. this will let the shot pattern be pretty good out to 40 yards. a 20 is nice but a lot less pellets. Sometimes a heavier gun is the ticket especially if they can rest it on a shooting stick. no 6 high brass works nice, pattern the gun yourself to see which brand of shell works best in it. the youth will never feel the kick with a bird in front of them.

    Target Panic

I htink a lot of it comes from trying to group your arrows tight. I've stopped shooting for groups instead i shoot multiple targets one arrow each. if its within and 1nch or two of my point of aim im satisfied!
  7. Just wondering if anyone else has found out that used artificial christmass trees make great semi- permanant blinds! The do not rot readily and my oldest is now 3 years old. The Best thing is that they are free!! I now have 3 ground blinds made from the limbs and tops or the artificial trees. I simply drive small 1/4 rods of metal or fiberglass electric fence posts(bought a bundle at an auction for few buck used)but any thing could be used conduit, wooden or metal stakes .. and tthen remove limbs from tree and wire onto stakes , bending the metal limbs to create openings to shoot thru. i use the top of the tree as the door and simply shove it into the ground. and pull it out to enter and exit. I good 8' tree can make a decent blind, but i found that two trees seem to work best. making about a 5-6 ' diamater circle that is over head high . The other nice thing is id your target is not quite in the window you've created its very easy to bend the wire limbs quietly to make a new window quickly. yes its open to the weather above but so are my other stands. And if i want to make another one i just keep an eye out around trash day!!!
  8. a lot of buds will freeze ..which may mean less apples/nuts this year depending how far along they are. i hope a lot of bugs get frozen stiff n die.....

    1st Doe Mount

nice ! never see to many doe mounted... you need to get a fleshing machine just watch the thumbs and fingers...
  14. I know the shed is a year n a half, have pics of him, body size is that of yearling and pedical base is under 1/2 in. looks just like a big plamated ten that we took off property 2 years ago... most likely related to him..
  15. not to many coyotes round my place, seem to be kept in check Yes lots of way for deer to die, guess im gonna have to learn forensic science if i really want to know the answer....
  16. Looks like hawthorn esp if has thorns, control it a little if you need acess to area, fruit is great for turkey, grouse, deer, and bear, and a bunch of other small game!! If no thorns may be one of several kinds of dogwood, will have either white or bluish purple berries with large pit. again can be food source but cut them down if need be.
  17. Im at 1960' in region 9 , this year will be corn, whitail institute clover and oats...
  18. if you own a tractor, buy yourself a field culitvator, and put sweeps on it. 6 tines, with sweeps will run you about 230$ or so can break the ground up and be almost ready for planting requiring only dragging to break up clumps. if i was only going to own 1 piece of equippment thats what i would buy.
  19. Well went out looking for sheds today, and found a nice palmated 1 1/2 year old. Then i found i buck that i had hit during bow low thru the brisket, it was not there in muzzloader, but i feel it may have died from complications from the wound would of been even better this year i'm sure and had convinced myself that it would live as i tracked it for 2 days and never found it. Maybe i'm being to hard on myself as it could of been shot and lost by a gun hunter, poacher or car/truck , as where i found it was not far from a road and i know it was not there in muzzleloader season as it lay on a logging road/property line.
  20. 16' are still good size fish buy heron can get them. mink are more likely the culprit.
  21. Clover works well in heavier/wetter soils, wild rice is possible depending how wet it is..
  22. I have grafted several apples (all orchard /heirloom varieties) growth is as slow or slower tham a planted tree, but yes your $ cost will be lower. than buying new trees to plant. the advantage on new trees is they have known flowering/producing /holding /ripening dates. you can do the same if you know a certaintree holds it fruit longer than surrounding trees, or flowers later to avoid a possible late frost. best of luck in what ever you decide to do!!!
  23. yes most apples can be grafted. not a bad idea, but it is more of an orchard production than wild. if your doing just a limb or two on a tree, the rest of the tree would require severe pruning for the limbs you graft to catch up. they more than likely will not produce for a few years same as a planted tree with a larger diameter trunk. for the effort and time needed to monitor your grafts and if the tree you graft it to in in the right place, i'd rather just plant a larger diameter apple and perhaps water it if need be. Now if your talking about grafting a few herloom varieties onto and existing apple for your consumption im all for it.
  24. The ground temp should be 50 degrees, sweet corn will be ravaged by coon and deer when it is the milk stage, and takes a very long time to dry down. Most field corn i plant is planted in the first two weeks of may, most is 90 daycorn this lets it" black tip" by early october, late sept, when this happens no more moisture is absorbed by the kernal you can see this by taking your thumbnail and snaping off the tip of a kernal, a black or brown scab will be visable. thus it starts to dy n dent, a frost or freeze at this point is not damaging. while deer will eat sweet corn readly it will mold fast if frosted or frozen as moisture is very high, causing many dieseses in the animals that eat them if they even do lots of animals avoid unfit food rather well but in harsh conditions may partake and be effected, 30 in row is very wide, by todays narrow row planting methods, but as you said you would like to plant pumpkins will work nicely, but now you create a weed control problem as many sprays are fine with sweetcorn atrazine/banvil / 2-4 d / round up but are bad for pumpkins. My suggestion is to check with your local wild turkey federation/ safari club/ or other local concervation clubs that give out roundup ready field corn seed for free as long as planted for wildlife and is not harvestable. plant it let it come up 4-6 in then plant your pumpkins and spray round up over entire field( it won't hurt the pumpkins as they have not yet sprouted and emerged from the soil. you can then also fill in rows that havent germinated with pumpkin seeds or more corn seeds, a 40 lbs bag of corn planted 2 in apart will plant approximatley 2.5 acres. so you dont need much corn seed.
