local walmart denied me the right to buy ammunition

Don't know about Monroe county but the Dick's Sporting Goods here in Westchester won't sell any ammo that can go into a handgun without showing a handgun permit. I specifically asked about 22LRs and they wouldn't even sell me that.

The problem with major chain stores is that they typically hire the average joe to work in their stores. These workers are not gun experts so their knowledge of the system is limited. My brother bought me a rifle from Dicks before as a gift and it created a fiasco. Before they realized it was a gift, we went through the paper work. (Us city folks have to register our long guns) The worker there didn't know how to fill out the form so I had to literally teach him how to fill it out.

I am actually in Orange county the town name in Monroe. However I have purchased ammo from that same dicks your talking about as well. I use to live in Putnam. I never had any problems with ammo purchases from the kmart in mahopac..

I also had this happen to me, the guy told me " theres no such thing as a 9mm rifle".

So I just took a hike wasn't even worth asking for a manager since I had no more intentions on buying ANY more ammo from wal-mart.

It's ashame they even have these people that know next to nothing about Guns/Ammo working in sports section.

Wait until they realize that many rifle rounds can be shot out of an encore pistol. This is why I reload, or carry my permit with me. The last time I purchased 22 shells they asked to see my permit. She looked at it and sold me the ammo. Unless she had a better memory than I, to write down all my info later, she never wrote anything down. The only thing I have ever had to do when I purchased powder, the seller had to put my name and address in a book they have to keep for atf. If you purchased pounds of powder every day, then they might come and ask why.

Im not a big fan of Gander Mtn. but all of their ammo (rifle, pistol and shotgun) is right out on the floor. Just grab what you need and check out. They never asked me for a permit.

I'm sure its some kind of C.Y.A policy put in place by Walmart. The last time I bought ammo there I told the girl behind the counter that I wanted a box of Remington 30-06. She grabs a box of 30-30 and puts them down infront of me. I told her "no I need 30-06" she then gabs a box of 308 and says "we have thirty -O eight" It was actually more funny than annoying because this girl knew less than nothing about ammo. I had to lean over the counter and point to the box I wanted. Then she says "Oh you mean three zero zero six?"

It is Walmart

This is from another site. The person who wrote this is a instructor at a seld defense, gun training and NRA instructor. This is what you need to know and do the next time you are asked to show a permit:

Recently, there has been a rash of reports from students about the following: When you go to buy ammo, the store asks you for your permit, takes it, writes down your name, permit number, and amount of ammo purchased in some 'book'.

THIS IS NOT LEGAL

Although any store can place any restriction or policies on the sale of any item to any person as long as they do not discriminate under the federally protected criteria, some are going way above and beyond.

From the BATF:

Q: Are the ammunition record-keeping requirements the same as for firearms?

A: No. No records are required for ammunition other than armor piercing ammunition. Disposition records must be kept by licensed manufacturers, importers, and collectors for transactions in armor piercing ammunition.

[27 CFR 178.125]

No retail store is required to collect ANY info regarding the sale or transfer of ammunition. Some have even made copies (front and back) of the permit as well.

NY State law requires you to be 21 to buy pistol ammo. There is no mention of a permit. If you go to get ammo and they ask you for anything more than 'possibly' to look at your permit, not take it from you and copy any info from it, then ask to see a manager. Ask them why they need to do what they are asking. If they say anything like "It's a law" then have them prove it. Show you the "law". (Don't worry, it does not exist)

It's one thing to have ridiculous policies that do not make sense, but it is a whole other level to pass the buck and say that "It's a law" when it is not. They are preying on the fact that we are all too milling to 'fall in line' when someone says "It's a law. You have to do this" when we don't even have the idea to actually verify.

Obviously, you could be faced with a couple outcomes: They stick to their policy and you can't get the ammo unless you provide what they ask, they give in and allow you to purchase the ammo without you having to provide the irrelevant info, or you simply walk away and refuse to give them your money.

Just keeping you informed.

All that says is that there is no requirement to keep a log. If the store has its own policy to keep a log, its not illegal for them to do so. You can simply choose not to buy there if you dont want them keeping a record of your purchase (which happens indirectly anyway).

I wouldn't buy any ammo in GM . Their prices are out of sight .

For the most part , I reload but if I need to buy , I wait until I will be near Beikirch's in East Rochester . Maybe the next time I am there I will stop off and have a coffee with Skillet .

Most of the small gun stores Walworth , East Avon , etc get their ammo from Beikirch's .

You're right fasteddie.... even right before deer season, when everyone else has ammo on sale, they are still the highest. Forget about the rest of the year. It's through the roof.

I've been getting ammo at Herb Philipsons for the past couple of years. Real good prices. I cant deal with buying ammo from the WalMart Jr. Miss, sales girl who is filling in at the sporting goods counter. Come to think of it I dont think I've ever talked to any Walmart person, in the sporting goods dept. who knew what they were talking about. Not that it's their fault.

A off topic but reacently went to bank to cash a check and because I did not have an acount they require 2 form's of ID.The only 2 proof's that I had at the time was my drivers and hunting lisence and the teller said that my hunting was not except,so I ask to talk to manager and she said to the teller that my hunting lisence was indeed exceptable because both are connected in the system. This is another reason we should have our photo's on our Hunting lisence's.Back to topic the packiging should be changed for rifle/pistol ammo we do not make these firearm's and should not be asked for seperate permit's.Also these store's should be required to hire federal autherized gun sale's and repair tech's,

the thing that struck me funny about this thread and I mean no offense but you do not have the right to buy ammo at walmart or any other store. They have the right to refuse any customer at any time, just like any other business can. They set their policies by the country not the state they are in. In other words if one state has a law it has to be done that way, they make all stores do it that way. This supposedly eliminates the chances of a person transferring to a different store in a different state and messing up a sale such as that.

Dom, I don't understand what you are trying to say about the packaging.

and as far as the mandates....why on earth would we want to put more requirements on a business tryign to make it. Who are we to have a say in what they must offer as a service? We don't need move Govt in anything. that woul dmean just more red tape and more fees to be passed on to us. why would we need these?

Certainly, Walmart and any other business has the right to act like jerks, and treat their customers anyway they feel like it. It's the American way .... lol. And I suppose customers can simply take it, thank them for their inconsideration, and and turn the other cheek (so to speak). Or, if it pleases you, you have the right to make a stink about it and let everyone there know that as a customer, they have not been of proper service. I wouldn't hesitate to make a couple of phone calls, or send e-mails or letters. I have no idea if it would ever have any effect on their policy, but why not register the complaint anyway.

Personally, I haven't bought ammo or much of anything else there that has to do with hunting. For one thing their stock is so limited that I no longer even waste my time looking to see what they've got. As far as ammo, I reload my own and we have a great store locally called Biecherks (I know that spelling is wrong) who have great prices, lots of bullet components and other gun associated inventory, and several resident experts onboard who know just about everything when it comes to guns and ammo.

I was just up there. Usually, I get a large amount of supplies to last me a couple of years, so it is going to be a while before I head up there again. I was just thinking the other day that if I went to some of normal retail stores to buy the quantities of powder, bullets, primers, etc., I would probably have the BATF guys busting down my door .... lol.

There also have been a few occasions where I have dealt with Midway to mail order some components. They are usually a bit more expensive than Beikirchs (especially when you ad in their exhorbitant shipping charges), but I save a bit on gas, and tax. For the occasional small order of something I ran out of, it can actually work out ok to mail-order.
