Rage 3 Blade - Are they legal in NY or not?

I remember this big debate over at the old forums if the Rage 3 blades were legal or not.

Was there ever an outcome?  I know there were different views from different DEC officials all over the place.

I don't think I ever heard any resolution, but I believe the generally accepted verdict is that it all depends on the mood of the CO that writes the ticket, or the mood of the judge that you appear in front of.

I work in the lodge at Dick's Sporting Goods and we don't even sell the 3 blade because for all intents and purposes they are illegal.  Like Doc said, it all depends on the CO's mood at the time.  You're better off with the 2 blade, they're more reliable and durable anyway.

Yes they sell them, but that has nothing to do whether they are legal for use or not.

Just because a store sells them doesn't make it legal.  The Gander Mountain I used to shop at back in Buffalo sold Acorn powder deer attractant.  Definitely not legal in this state but still sold.

The 3 blade Rage's are illegal because they are considered a "barbed" broadhead . I havn't found any DEC officer that would consider them legal . About the only time we see any DEC officers is at the Sportsmen's Dinners .

I believe That 3 blade rage or illegal. Two blades are not. Just to make sure I have just sent an e-mail to a man I have been talking with, from the DEC.

Last fall Gander Mt was selling the Rage 3's at the Henrietta store ( so was Dicks) . They had a sign that said they were illegal to hunt with .

Here is info. From the DEC representative I have been speaking to.

NYSDEC does not maintain a list of broad heads that are acceptable or unacceptable for use in New York.  It is the hunters' responsibility to recognize whether the broad heads they purchase and use meet the legal standard for big game hunting in New York. Rage makes a 2-bladed and 3-bladed broad head and our DEC Division of Law Enforcement has looked at both broad heads.  Both versions seem to deploy well and meet NY's legal requirements for number of cutting surfaces and cutting width.  However the 3-bladed version does not seem to retract consistently.  That is, the blades of the Rage 3 do not seem too consistently "freely swing forward" into a non-barbed position upon extraction of the arrow as required by NYS Regulations.  While mechanically it is possible for the blades of the Rage 3 to freely pivot forward, during our examination the blades occasionally got caught on each other and therefore may act as a barbed broad head.  Barbed broad heads are illegal for big game hunting in NY, but our laws and regulations do not prohibit barbed broad heads for turkey, coyote, or small game.

It sounds like some of the Rage 3 heads do retract and some don't. That's kind of what the wording of "consistantly" means to me. Does anyone know if that is the case. If so, I would assume that if you can demonstrate that your particular Rage 3 that you used to harvest a deer does "retract consistently" then I guess it is legal. Also, I am curious if there is some modification that can fix the problem of "the blades occasionally getting caught on each other and therefore acting as a barbed broad head". I've never seen one of these things up close and personal, so that is why I am curious.

The Rage 2 works great . The Rage 3 is illegal . I wouldn't tak e a chance on getting caught wirh a Rage 3 Broadhead in my quiver . I had not heard the bit about sometimes they don't fold back and sometimes they do so they aren't consistant . I have only been told by DEC officials that they are illegal and that's good enough for me .

I had the 3 blade, had to buy the 2 blade. DEC officer that I met in the woods gave me a warning but let me go, with the 3 blade.

I shot the 3 blade and the comment about consistiently is correct. they do tend to hang up on each other and stay barbed. I have the 2 blade version now. I didn't want to take the chance on finding a CO in a bad mood. I do hate shooting even numbered balded broad heads though

the way the 3 blade deployes are sliders unlike the regular folders so when you pull the sliders out they will catch and not reset like the folders, thats why they banned them in new york.

the 2 blade will reset and can be used in new york.

Iteresting at gander I've seen 3 blade Rage, Bags of acorns, acorn powder, and primos battery operated doe in heat cans. All with signs they are illegal in NY. So why do they sell them in their NY stores?

They probably would say that they are available for NYS hunters who hunt out of state where such products are legal.

Barbed broadheads have been illegal for years . Long before the "liberal environmentalists" got involved with everything so that doesn't hold water .

that's odd when Dick's sells all kinds of minerals and bait, anything from Deer Cane to molded chunk of corn you screw into the ground.  I've mostly just stuck to 2 blade heads for big game.  Mostly the Titaniums because I could get them for the same cost as the regular ones.  I've messed with them and they don't seem to hang up.  once two blades made contact and there was a delay in them folding forward to an unbarbed position but they still did.  I can't see an ECO giving you a hard time but it's easy to just use a 2 blade model or other brand all together.  Problem solved.

We have been told by DEC that the 3 blade are not legal in NY. As far as the attractants (powders,blocks etc) anything containing salt or a salt derivitative or a type of food.. ..anything that can be consumed by deer ...all that stuff is also not legal but sold for hunters venturing outside of NY to states where it is legal.

Pretty sure the reason they want the blades to retract is because in case of a bad hit the arrow can work itself out where a barbed point is in for good..
