irish_redneck
Is today a youth hunt? Hearing rifles in the distance. Saw kids in orange entering woods with rifles on my way here. Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
fasteddie
Don't know . Hunting varies in different parts of the state . Since you are simply from New York , your question would be pretty hard to answer ..........

shawnhu
Sighting in the woods where others may be hunting? Is that legal/ethical?
Doc
Don't forget that small game season is still in effect. I have heard all kinds of ruckus going on from some of the small game hunters. Sometimes it seems like they are just walking through the woods blazing at trees or chickadees or maybe each other .... lol. Here in the southern zone there is also a turkey season in progress. And also as has been already mentioned, guys are checking out their deer guns. So, there are lots of reasons to be hearing shooting going on, and lots of reasons for "kids in orange entering woods with rifles".
WNYBuckHunter
Sighting in the woods where others may be hunting? Is that legal/ethical? Yes its legal. If its state land and target shooting is legal on it, perfectly fine. Ethics? Are you serious? There are already small game hunters and waterfowlers discharging guns while others are bow hunting. Whats the difference?
shawnhu
I mentioned ethics because hunters discharging firearms is once in a while only when game is in sight. Target practice I would think is unnecessary discharge, especially if there is a range nearby that can accomplish the same thing. I'm probably the last person that would want to pay for gas and range fees to sight in a gun, but I also think it's the safe and responsible thing to do. Upstate we dont differentiate between the range and the field. They are one and the same.
shawnhu
I guess things are a bit different then. Pretty sure with the crowd we have downstate, it's probably not a great idea, especially with rifles.
Doc
I haven't heard it yet this year, but in years past, I have heard guys walking through the state land blazing away at trees or whatever, sounding like a some kind of deer drive .... lol. That was their idea of target practice. Any deer that had any thoughts of moving during daylight hours quickly changed their minds when that stuff started. Was it legal? ..... I'm sure it is. But it sure was un-nerving for bowhunters and small game hunters alike who found themselves in the path of these guys.

Five Seasons
yeah there's pros and cons to living in the country. Pro, there's no noise ordinance so you can do what you want. Con, there's no noise ordinance so your neighbors can do anything they want. i have some neighbors that built a motocross track. try enjoying an afternoon on the deck with dirtbikes going round, and round, and round... Five Seasons
I just moved in and they own 10 acres that butts up to mine. There's a few good spots on their land and that property butts up to another 80 owned by a girl i went to high school withs father. So i'm going to try and get in good with him and ask to bow hunt. If he says no i might put some nails in their ramps jk jk
