fasteddie
I have seen quite a few reviews on what sabots shoot best out of the Savage 220 . My concern is meat damage . I have heard that the polymer tipped slugs tear the heck out of a deer . Is there much truth to that ? I don't want to shoot a slug that is going to waste a lot of meat . What are any of you that shoot the polymer tipped slugs experiencing for meat damage ?
chiefbkt
I shoot Winchester supreme dual bond slugs in my Savage 212. They group pretty well at 100 yards and don't destroy a lot of meat (unless you hit shoulder). I would recommend them to anyone. Only negative is the price. At $15-$20 a box of 5, you don't want to spend a lot of time on the range with them. But to me, they are worth the money.
Chromeslayer
savage recommends the Remington Accutip 2 3/4 and 3in, and Federal Barnes Expander 3in (no longer in production)... to me id want the most accurate slug for my gun and put the round where it needs to go

fasteddie
Sure I want accuracy but I was told that the polymer tips destroyed a lot of meat on a deer . Thanks for the replies . Dayum the ammo is expensive ! I might be going to Indiana the end of next month . There is a store there that has the winchester Supreme Dual Bond Slugs for just over $12 a box . Right now they have them for $10.29 . Big difference from $16 a box . If it warms a a bit I have some Federal Power Shoks I want to try . Too cold and windy to go to the range . 16. ga hunter
i shot the power shocks out of my h&r this year grouped well and dropped the deer in their tracks not much damage. i also had bad exp. with expanders and rib bones blowing the belly out of a broad side doe caught a rib and turned 90*
Chromeslayer
i would shoot the accutips first to see how they group before buying others... savage recommends them for a reason.... but every gun is different
fasteddie
I have heard that the accutips are awesome for accuracy and I know they are expensive . I don't want to blow up a deer just drop it . No doubt the best way to find out is shoot some . Thanks
fasteddie
I bought 2 boxes of Winchester Supreme Dual Bond sabots as well as 2 boxes of Hornaday sabots . Now all I need is the weather to cooperate so I can try them out .

jjb4900
I've been using the Hornady SST sabots that have a polymer tip, haven't noticed any excessive damage.........and they shoot great out of my slug gun.
Fishon
I use 20 ga lightfields. They shoot great and do a number on the deer. I want to try winchester bri slugs.
fasteddie
I heard the Federal Barnes Expanders were shooters but they quit making them . The American Way ---- something works , change it !
fasteddie
The associate at Dicks in Henrietta said he bought one of the Savage 220F when they 1st came out a few years ago and found the Hornaday's to work great for him ............ cdmckane
I've only ever fired Hornady 2 1/2" SSTs. No excessive meat damage if you hit the vitals. A buddy hit one in the shoulder and ruined a bunch of meat, but that'll happen with most any round. moog5050
Accutips and win supreme both shoot great from my 220. Don’t notice excessive meat damage from either.
Robhuntandfish
Mine always liked the federal vital shock 275 grain. Tried them cause I couldn't find the Remington's and they shot even better groups.
Oldebona
I use the 3" Remington Accutips in my 20 guage Savage. Have had great success with very little meat loss
