growalot
We'er all at the barn ...getting out the small JD's and Angel is going nuts in the hay mound...I tell Mr B she must on the feral cat I've seen this winter....I heard it hissing...well she's about to pull the whole mound down so I start moving bails....thinking the cat would escape over the top like a big fat red squirrel had just done...Mr B starts down the drive, charger in hand ,saying "You sure it's not a Raccoon?" That's the moment Angel lets out a war cry and out pops a raccoon that lunged over my head as I was duck and covering screaming RACCOON !!!! and calling Mr B...he's yelling "get out of there"!!...I glanced over my shoulder to see it bouncing over the top of my equipment and Angel was right on its tail ..the two of them dragging the push spreader out the door with them We got her called off ...there are more in the barn but she was bitten on the side of the mouth and I needed to clean it....going back over to access the situation in a few moments...The barn reeks of urine ...OK so that was a tad to close a call...lol

carloracer1987
I hope she is up to date on her rabies shot, if not take her to the vet lol, my dog loves to attack coons as well. Shoot em all !
Lawdwaz
Heck that's no good. On a similar but different note I got in the middle of a dog fight this morning and got a little scratched up. It happened in the literal blink of an eye. I honestly don't know if it is a scratch from a paw or a bite it was so fast........
growalot
So there were hay bails all over and I needed to get them moved so we could pull the tractors back in...Mr. B wouldn't let me go over with out Angel and the 22...OK I get in the barn and there is raccoon sheet(fresh) all over the place..WTH! I'm raking that with loose hay out the door when Angel starts crying again...I no sooner grab the 22 and click the safety off a big tailless male coon jumps out of the hay on Angels head ...they both rolled out the back door and I head out around the barn...The coon is on its back under her and there blood and teeth nashing every where...I finally call her off and shoot him......he turns and charges me and I shoot 2 more times...I hit him each time ...now Angels on him again and she drags him away from me...I get her called off again and he starts to climb a tree...I dropped him with a head shot... OK now that scared me ...Angel has puncture wounds to her legs and to her chin, under her eye and inside of her lip...Yes everyone got their rabies shots last fall So the one that cleared my head this afternoon must have been the female...I got angel cleaned up and went back over to look for little ones...thankfully there are none They had a nest chewed out in the middle of the hay mound ...cleaned up the barn and got tractors put away. Shes been cleaning wounds and laying next to me shaking...second attack in a week...I'll call the vets in the morning....She may need a booster....glad we have plenty of surgical gloves.... carloracer1987
Sorry to hear about that being the 2nd attack ! might be safe to take the dead coon to the dec and have them test it for rabies. Just an option. Glad to hear there is not any more !

Pygmy
Geeeze, Growie...Maybe you should get a bayonet on that .22 for going hand to hand with those charging killer coons....<<wink>>... My Old Fat Father had coon dogs all of his life...I have been involved in many hound/coon fights..It does get exciting at times.. Gotta be careful in the heat of battle..A few years back a local hunter got involved in trying to help his hound in a tooth & claw battle with a big coon.. He decided to whack the coon with the butt of his rifle...Big mistake..He shot himself in the stomach and died before his buddies could get medical help for him. Anyway, I hope you get your pup patched up... What kind of a dawg is she ..?? How big ??.. Edited April 14, 2013 by Pygmy
growalot
Ya I'm a tad more careful than that...poor guy...my fear was tripping as I was backing away shooting him and trying to make sure Angel was clear of any shots ...I put 4shots in him ..he had damn big sharp needle teeth...I've never seen a raccoon with no tail....that maybe why he was so aggressive...Poor Angel I have her covered up with a thermal blanket and she is still shaking like a leaf

Pygmy
Everything should be OK now, except the poor coon is shot full of holes, the poor dog is traumitized for life, and Poor Mr B. is still hiding behind the tractor hoping he doesn't catch a stray bullet.. <<< grin >>>...... The coon is up in RACCOON HEAVEN right now, still looking for his TAIL...hehehehe...

Pygmy
Oh yeah....And GROWIE is sitting on the couch watching reruns of "The A-Team" ( she likes Mr T) eating bon bons and carving another notch in the stock of her 10-22...
growalot
Lol ...Pygmy...Mr B came over with the dbl barreled 12ga when he heard all the pop pop popping...his first words were "you didn't hit the backhoe did you?"..LOL Thanks guys...well Angel is up and about but moving slow and her chin and the lower side of her mouth is all swollen up. The hay is going out to be the back drop for my archery target...They managed to go on dang near all the bales...the whole barn just reeks now and my shoes which are delegated to the garage until I figure out how to get rid of the stank
growalot
Carlo...too late for that I shot it in the head....and they have to test the brain...but I just think....the first one was we /she happened upon the two coming down out of their den and surprised them...being two they were just bolder...this today, was she found them in their hay mound "nest together"...all looked healthy...with the exception of that male not having a tail...I thought there would have been babies about the way they defended the"nest" but nothing...the female probably won't return...The Vet will more than likely require a booster shot though...at least has in the past
growalot
Ok so this has now just gotten stupid!...Mr B. left for work yesterday and called me...The blk Feral cat was out at the barn when I left...No surprise except he said blk...what I'd been seeing was a tabby....Just now I went over to zip down the doors because the winds picked up and it's sprinkling...quick run... just the dog with me...get to the back door and Angel starts whining ...squeezes past me and the half zipped door then crawls into the hay...really again!... Dang if out jumps the tabby running toward me then dashes down under the cardboard walls for the blinds..the chase is on but it made it to the other( goats old) barn... I believe time for the have a heart traps... This is what I find strange...what are 2 raccoons and two feral cats and a red squirrel.... that looks like a soft ball with a head legs and tail...doing all living in the same small hay mound?..lol... Looks like I'll have a good back drop for archery and gun...it's all going to the shooting range tomorrow

Pygmy
Growie..Just as an aside... Are you using HV hollow points in your .22 ? Looking back on my experience shooting coons ( and also woodchucks) with a .22 rimfire, regular solid long rifles are not very effective for body shots. They will kill the animal, but usually not stop it immediately unless you hit the CNS ( brain or spine). The hollow points are MUCH more effective and will kill them much quicker with body shots..They are also somewhat less likely to exit and do damage to objects behind the target, as in when you are shooting inside a building. growalot
I have my clips loaded with some old standard velocity CCI 1070fps..... Mr. B was able to find some copper plated round nose CCI shells 1200fps..Dang I just saw the price...I may cut down on the plinking.... ...but I'm using up the old ones We have a spinning plinking target I like to shoot and I carry it just in case...lately...... just in case has been too frequent...lol Your right...because after I got Angel away and an open non head shot...he just turned on me...the other two shots just made him pause a second and keep coming...of course I'm sure the battle with Angel had him pumped up pretty good...though he only made it 5ft up the tree before having to stop..Which gave me the head shot... The hav-a-heart and tuna will hopefully eliminate the cats...they will go to the pound for them to deal with....Our son has it now...trying to catch a raccoon in his garage... Pygmy
Grow I would shoot the cats and get rid of them before they have kittens.never mind the trap get rid of them. Holy CRAP, Dude !! We have goody two shoes over on the " Dropped That Coyote " thread suggesting that one might lose his hunting license in 32 states for shooting a fricken COYOTE hanging around his barn !! Now you are suggesting that poor Growie should violate the animal cruelty law by shooting poor kitty cats ?? There are articles in the paper weekly where citizens are charged with " cruelty to animals" for shooting unwanted dogs and cats... Are you trying to get Growie in TROUBLE ???.. ANARCHIST..!!...
