My latest hobby...(bottles)

Well, antler season is winding down for me so I needed something else to play 'hide-n- seek' with throughout the summer months.

I've always been a bit of a scavenger in regaurd to what some folks (and critters) leave littered throughout the woods, so it only seemed natural that eventually some common woodland dump sites would start to reveal some new treasures for me. I've actually been at this for a couple years now, but only recently started bringing any "trophies" home to clean up and start an actual collection of.

My latest hobby is bottle collecting....

Obviously it's kind of like treasure hunting with a better chance of coming home with more misquito bites and tics than it's worth, but it sure beats watching "Chasin' Tail" all summer long, lol. The biggest payoff for me to this point has been researching the history behind these old throw away relics, and some of them are just pretty darn interesting to look at and think back to a different time not too terribly long ago.

Anyhow, just thought I'd share my 3 most worthy recent finds and see if anyone else is into digging up this kind of stuff without the metal detecters.

This first one is my Certo bottle find, or my 1/2 cup bottle as I call it.

My next find for 2013 was this Schenleys whiskey bottle I thought was pretty cool. I don't think it's very old, but who knows.... I haven't found any information on it yet.

It says:

"Federal Law Forbids Sale Or Re-Use Of This Bottle"

... and my most recent find was this nice blue glass Great Bear Springs Company 5L water bottle. Unfortunately, this one has a hole in the back of it. I'm hoping to find one just like it still in one piece. It's tough to read in the pic, it says:

"Great Bear Spring Company"

"Five Pints"

"This Bottle Is Loaned And Never To Be Sold"

My youngest boy collects bottles he finds.  After researching some of them we have found out that the milk bottles seem to be worth some bucks.  He has a couple of them that were apraised for over 100 bucks each.  I use to think it was a great hobby for him until every darn shelf in the house is filling up with his collection and the lack of desire to clean them has disappeared lol.  I need to build a nice wall shelf and put them in his room one of these days.

My brother and I started bottle collecting/digging a few years ago. I have a decent collection and his is getting pretty out of hand! lol

Most of mine include:

Bitters,

Whiskeys,

Sodas,

Apothecary,

Perfumes,

Milks.

It can get pretty addicting. We hope to start our first privy dig soon!

I metal detect too, but often get sidetracked by some nice glass!

It is cool to find these things. I have brought home many over the years.Last year I found an old one quart 'PRINDLE' milk bottle. My wife loves it. She uses it to put flowers in. The coolest one I've found is an old Piels beer bottle. It's brown and all the words are molded into the glass.

One time I was poking around in an old, dilapidated barn and I found an old glass persciption bottle that was in perfect shape. The label was hand written in perfect penmanship and dated 1900. It was from a long gone pharmacy (druggist) in Syracuse. I had it on my mantle for a few years but then I bought my son a nerf football and the rest is history.

Bottles are cool.  I found and given away lots of them over the years.  One that I kept is a pretty old Coke bottle.  If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll snap a pic or two.

+1

Me too! I found a Really old glass coke (or pepsi i forget) and have it on my dresser...

My coolest bottle found is a brown Rhineold Chug a Mug bottle(no idea of the value). I had a great aunt who would slam quarts of Rhinegold like its her job..hanging out her Brooklyn brownstone window while we played stoopball and running bases on sewer caps. I'll try to post a pic later.

Here is the Coke bottle I mentioned earlier.  I don't think it is that old, just from an era that is looooooong gone.  This heavy (14 fl oz) glass bottle only holds 6oz of Coke!  I couldn't imagine what a truck load of these babies must have weighed!  The quality of this find is nothing special either but here it is.........
