burmjohn
I herd a lot of shots this last 4 days during the southern opener. These were single rifle shots. They were not multiple shots like someone sighting in their rifle. It really makes me wonder, and I am not the only one in the area that herd then, it sounded like rife season! Pipecrew
I bowhunt area 7H where it is shotgun only. I heard some shots this past weekend but I assume they were guys hunting ducks and geese. I usually bowhunt the last day of bow season. You should hear all the gun shots that Friday, it's unbelievable. I think more deer get shot on Friday with shotguns than they do on Saturday. Cabin Fever
Maybe .22 mags or .17's cracking a few squirrels.
WNYBuckHunter
Coyotes are open as well. I have been hearing alot of single shots, they are probably just guys small game hunting. As far as there being a ton of shooting the day before the gun opener, thats no surprise, half of the guys out there only shoot their deer guns once or twice a year. Most of them sight in on the day before. Even though I sight mine in and shoot a bunch well in advance, I always put a round or two through mine the day before just to make sure nothing got bumped. mxsmitz201
Its turkey season as well. I kno of a few neighbors after them. Kinda sucks cuz if it keeps up like it is around where I live deer will be nocturnal well into bow season instead of opening day +1 in rifle haha
crappyice
I had the same experience opening day but many of the shots were before legal light so that would rule out small game. Maybe yotes which my area would appreciate.
Dakota Dog
I have to go with mxsmitz and say most of the single shots are probably people turkey hunting. This is my first year bow hunting and the last 22 years I was one of those out there turkey hunting while you guy's where bow hunting. I know why did I wait until I was 38 to start bow hunting? Just never knew how exciting it was.

Is there a chance of a food plot near by that I can't see, I am sure there is. Just saying, seemed a little fishy

burmjohn
Me and Antlers are less then a 1/2 a mile away from each other by the way. I didn't know that your buck last year had corn. Guess we have to keep our eyes out. I forgot the other user on this site that is from the area, he said he was told from a state trooper they had a problem with spotlight poaching in the area as well. sits in trees
Let the Anti's do the job of being critical on hunters. why is it every time someone hears a shot that they think someones poaching, it's small game season, and turkey season and yea some guy's just like to shoot at stuff once in a while for crying out loud?? Don't be afraid theres not a poacher hiding behind every tree shooting your buck of a lifetime.
Doc
Let the Anti's do the job of being critical on hunters. Being critical of poachers is not quite the same as being critical of hunters. Frankly, if there are people out there poaching deer, I would hope that all hunters would be critical of that. As far as the odd shot here and there, it's true that there is an awful lot of legal gun activities available at this time of year, and I suspect that all or nearly all shots are probably for legitimate reasons. That's not to say that poaching doesn't happen. It's just that it is likely not as prevalent as some might imagine. However, if someone suspects that some odd shot at some odd time might be poaching, I don't see any reason to jump all over their case as being critical of hunters. Actually, I like the idea that people are on the look-out for suspicious activity. Doc
