Live From the Stand / Woods 2013!

sure guns are going off...this is the country!...no one goes to the local gun club...and the ones that do...the club is just a couple of miles away and they host shoots...lol The weekends are always filled with shooting...but hey, that's not a problem. it's the damn guys with dogs barking from morning til night...lol

My point was this time of year all woods public.... private are filled ..and with bow season getting more and more popular all the movement the deer aren't use to puts them on high alert and more nocturnal........ until the rut really kicks in...We as hunters just need to adjust...

Oh and yes...ppl are pushing the woods...be it unintentional...I for one avoid that as much as possible in the way I hunt...especially on the week ends when the camps are full...another reason why I'm so "anal" about making sure all my trails are clean...this week end I walked into 2 different bedding groups...and didn't know it until they got up and stretched....one was 12yrds from the stand....

Imagine if they legalized crossbows ;)

Any how...tonight  I had a young doe..tail at half mast walk a deer trail 14yrds out..stop rub urinate and 3  mins. later in came a little fork horn...he stopped at her urine then went to my drag pad and turned to come over and sniff my bow that was on the tow line....good thing I spray it and my gloves/hands down well....he then continued on toward the ag fields

Tired as all get out. Haven't been able to sleep in within the last 2 weeks. I took a night shift today to get out this morning. Perfect morning to get out. Cold with not much wind. Rut is kicking in. If it wasn't for being such a perfect morning I would have stayed in bed for sure.

Doh think I shot a small 4 pt. Still kind of dark. Deer comes in at 15 yrds. Looks like a doe. Stop it in the lane. Shoot and then I see what looks like small horns. Shot looked good just a bit high. Deer bounds 15 yards and stops. Then walks away slowly. I guess it's possible it ducked the arrow

About 730 I hear heavy walkin coming to me down a trail. A doe come into my 25 yard shooting lane and right behind her is a huge high 130"ER. He was 2 feet shy of stepping into my lane! I can see him clear as day behind some brush smelling this doe infront of him. She was all weary with him on her so she made a quick trot a few steps and stopped, I thought he would have moved fwd into the lane but be turned where he came from and looped around.

So close!! First time the bow came off the hanger for the season. Hope he comes back in

Had a cool experience last sunday. Had a wide beamed (typical 8 size) but instead no brow tines and just a fork at the end of each beam 4 pt. come in and hit the 3 scrapes in front of the stand. Could have shot him a few times over the course of 5 minutes. Anyhow, here is why I'm a believer in scent control. The deer comes towards me and ends up at the base of the stand I'm in. He sniffs around the screw ins. licks them and doesn't even so much as wag his tail. I wear scentlok gloves and obviously wash with scent free soap and spray down everything. He then walks behind me (downwind) casual without a care. Now this is 1.5 year old deer, but it's still cool.

Last night behind my house (different property) very suburban i have people all around in their yards, 2 cats walk by my stand and then at 6pm 5 deer come into shooting range. It's amazing how they become use to the noise.

got to sleep in a half hour later...legal 7:40 this morning...and it was and is cold...28 degrees....got in pretty quiet and set the decoy then hit the ladder to the gully stand..The wind had tore away the sound buffers and holy crap a squeaked and squawked ....like a haunted house on crack....22ft ft of uproar...got to fix that...figured I wouldn't see a thing......I'd just stepped onto platform and the crunching started...really...deer every where and walking in and around me...I'd snuck in past them bedding...and  they got up and came over to inspect the noise....most I couldn't make out they repositioned them selves on the opposite ridge...but some milled around and as it got light they were looking hard 2 doe in particular...then I saw a young buck tending a doe...and as they moved off...mind you I'm still standing and quiver is on my back, bow on deck, no arrow noc'dd...I hear heavy steps coming in...still a tad dark but by the time he got to me I'd gotten the quiver off the arrow out and bow up and noc'd...now he see the decoy and instead of turning down trail towards it...he circles behind the  tree...down wind of me...he gets just to the side of stand and I turn just enough to see it's the 6pt from yesterday...he's sniffing the air and then looks  straight up...there I am all contorted face mask down and one glove off...he thought about it for a moment and the swirled around and left the way he came...Didn't make much noise no snorts and only a little flagging....well at 10am a gust is wind blew over the decoy.......later 2 fawns came by and I was done at 11.30....the long stand while the deer moved through..and there were a lot...just had the ole knee screaming...something better happen very soon...it's just about done...still GREAT MORNING

had a 6 point chasing a doe around my stand for 20 minutes, he was grunting like crazy, very long grunts. bucks seem to be looking for does and also chasing pretty hard. the 2 doe that came in this morning had pretty dark hocks, they werent completely dark but im sure they are getting close and driving these bucks nuts.

      Hi Everyone,
It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

I'm new to the area and looking for some places to hunt  the next few weekends through bow/muzzleloader season. I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      Hi Everyone,
My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!
