Rifle hunting deer in the Adirondacks.

I'm planning a trip to hunt Hamilton County during rifle season. My father and I are renting a cabin near Inlet. Anyone have any suggestions for places to go/things to look for during scouting trips? I'm making a trip up sometime in the next few weeks. I was told to look for Breech trees and places where logging is on process, so that will be my initial targets when I head up. Thanks guys.

Plan on covering some ground. Are you gonna be hunting Moose River plains?

 

Ahh, Moose River Plains.  Fond memories of that area!  In 1986 we did a pack in hunt there.  7 guys on horses, wall tents etc. for 7 nights.  We never saw a deer.....................................49 man days in the bush and ZIP.  I saw a nice bear and one other guy saw a coyote.  That was it.

 

It really was a fun time though.  I probably still have the topo maps with all my others, rolled up in the floor joists in the basement.

 

One thing that wasn's so fun was at the end of the hunt one of the nags was tied to a steel fence gate, something spooked it (NOT a deer!) and it jumped and came down on a sharp piece of iron sticking off the gate.  150 stitches to close that baby up..........uggh.

Good advice so far. Covering ground and looking for mountain features like benches, saddles. To add to that, the tops of ridges,and also the corners of mountains (where one mountain meets another). A lot of good info can be obtained from topo map before you even step foot in woods. Also, don't be put off if a whole mountainside doesn't show you a track. Sometimes large areas can be pretty dead. This could be a food thing but also if weather has them holed up or if the deer themselves just aren't moving for whatever reason. This is why covering ground is important. Especially the first couple days of your hunt, or if you have a chance to scout.

I haven't been up there for rifle, only bow. Guys like the Salerno bros who are infamous for getting deer on public lands have a certain strategy to do so. They wait for fresh snow to hit the ground and then track track track. Of course they live there so its easier to wait for snow rather than planning a trip for it. If there is snow when you are there I would try that. Just don't get lost. Deer densities are the lowest in the state and at least where I went, beech trees were not all over. Forget about Oaks. There is so much woods for deer to be and move. At least during rifle there will be more people pushing. Good luck and report back!

1) No logging on Public land in the Park.

2) Bring at least two compasses, flashlights and ways to start a fire, apiece.

3) Make sure your boots are broken in because you will put on some miles.

4) Two words: Fern beds.

5) Pray for snow.

6) If you stay within a couple hundred yards of the roadways and trails there will be people to move the deer around.  Get waaay back in like we do and you'll be pretty lonely.  We set up 7 miles in from the parking lot on the end of the (no motor vehicles allowed) trail so in 17 years I ran into two people.

Not entirely true. The land is "Forever Wild", meaning no logging now that the state owns it. But, that doesn't mean that a previous owner didn't log it. I've been on state land in the Adks that had easy to follow logging roads. Some was logged as recently as the 90's. I can't say I'm familiar with any state land in Inlet though.

Well technically nearly all of it has been logged at one time or another, but it isn't going to get logged any more.

I've heard of them. That's what I was planning on doing, I get to impatient to just hunt from a stand all day. I've gotten better due to archery hunting but I do prefer to still hunt. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'll update you all when we get back.

So my trip to the Adirondacks was a success! My dad, uncle and myself hunted out of Inlet for a week although we saw few deer I was able to close the deal on a decent 8 with a huge body. On the first day I saw 2 deer, a doe & big buck but couldn't get a shot. On the second day I was walking back a trail to an area I planned on hunting after about three miles I cut into the woods towards the saddle I had in mind. I had only been off the trail for maybe 5 minutes, sneak hunting my way up a small rise when I crested it I saw him standing there at 30 yards. He was facing me and I immediately thought to raise the gun and shoot. My shot went through the brisket into the heart and stopped against his back rib. He dropped instantly, such a good hunt to share with family. It was a long drag out, made even longer by the 215 lbs of deer.

      Just wanted to post a video of one of my successful bow hunts this year. Something about documenting your hunt and self filming adds even more of a rewarding feeling to a bow harvest when it all comes together. *Disclaimer*  I don't think I'm a "pro" nor am I trying to be just love filming and tinkering around with the editing. The audio on the video from my second doe harvest is much better than this one, I figured out a few tricks with the editing software recently and I'll have that one done by the weekend. You can skip through the talking parts if you want the shot happens around the 3:20 mark.
