Curious, whats everyone's vote / thoughts on Gambling Amendment, Proposal 1?

I rather see the money stay in the state rather then people going to Foxwoods / Poconos / AC.  However, I'm sure there are plenty of downsides that I have not considered yet.

Gambling is going to happen...might as well regulate it and have the money go into the state.  Detroit (one of the most crime riddled cities) successfully implemented a casino a few years ago I don't see how NYS can't do it.  Removes a little of the gambling on the streets as well.

Also Cuomo makes it sound like nothing but good can come from casinos. People need to be aware of the negative effects casinos have on a community. Living not far from an Indian casino I have seen people lose their jobs, family, and everything they own do to gambling addictions. Theft in the area has increased not only because of the casinos but I have heard of many cases of people stealing money from work, friends, relatives thinking they could win and pay it back just to be fired or arrested because people are fed up with dealing with their addiction. Some of these people I had known in the past and never thought would have resorted to that. Casinos also make it quite convenient for the bigger crime rings in the area to launder their money.

this isn't the 1920's. There are more retired old people gambling then there is gangsters and hookers. If the Indian's are going to do it anyhow, why not bring some more jobs and revenue into the state? They were building a beautiful casino near the shores in buffalo before it was halted. now it's just an iron beamed eye sore.

Casinos are just another form of entertainment. Frankly I don't see it as an earth shattering issue.

I would be ok with gambling if it isn't on LI.  Too much traffic here already.  You might say yes to gambling in NY, but would you say yes if it were near you?

My old man is praying for it up in Sullivan County where he lives.  The old concord property seems to be in the lead as far as getting the deal if it went through from what I heard.

Detroit did file for bankruptcy but one casino isn't going to save an entire city that completely depended on the US auto industry. When the casino showed up crime didn't automatically jump up. Like Belo said, its not the 1920's and there wasn't a bunch of shoot outs outside of the casino. As a matter of fact, downtown Detroit by the casino is probably the only place left standing in that city.

They recently built a slot machine casino in Yonkers here in NYS. It's been doing very well. No increase in crime. Jobs were created. People seem happy.

Detroit went bankrupt for many reasons.  Not just because the auto industry got in trouble.  But I won’t go into my theory as to why.  I’ll just say that the productive people left Detroit, leaving nothing but God’s clowns to populate a once great city….watch an episode of ‘hardcore pawn’ and you’ll see what I mean.

 

As for gambling in NYS…who cares…go piss away your SS check if you want…good luck!

I live in Yonkers, and sometimes go over to Empire City for entertainment.  They have some good restaurants, good brews, and lots of fun.  I know people who overindulge in gaming, but they'd do it here or somewhere else by betting the ponies, heading to A/C or CT, wherever.  People can't wait for the NYS Keno to come on everyday so they can play their numbers and spend all their money.  The Catch-22 is if we don't pass it, we lose the revenue for our state.  How many people are out of work next to the Concord ?  The Monticello Raceway is not the answer, just a poor outlet for gaming.  I'm originally from that area, and it can definitely use a shot in the arm.  Same goes for the Buffalo area, and other cities in our state.

I read somewhere (that I can't locate now) that if it goes through, most of the resultant money goes to The Emperor or NYC and screw the rest of the state.  SOP for NY.

Out of all the negatives I listed the biggest negative is that King Cuomo is pushing for it. Like everything else he is involved in in one way or another it is going to come back and bite the citizens of this state. I was not claiming that my community is comparable to the gangster era 20's or that we are flooded with hookers, although I do live right next to the Canadian Border where smuggling drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and people happens on a daily basis and a casino makes it quite convenient to launder money.  I was just trying to point out some of the negative things that come along with the casinos and just like Detroit casinos are not going to save NYS.

I hate gambling with all of my heart and wish that no one ever gambled again and I wouldn't mind seeing all of the casinos gone. With all of that I still wouldn't want some one being forced not to gamble. I think its the right of the person to make the decision him self.

Building a "real" casino in NY will not create new gamblers. It will generate a fraction of the revenue they claim. Why would someone from PA, NJ or CT come to NY to gamble? They can already do that in their backyard. Look how well Atlantic City is doing. They have been losing money ever since PA allowed casinos. Will probably file bankruptcy within the year.

And if it is so good for NY, why only 7 located downstate and along the Hudson. Put one in my back yard so I can save some gas money.

As others stated... King Andy's for it, I am against it.

if some of you that gamble want something better to do with your hard earned dollars,why don't you donate to

 

some of the 2nd amendment groups,conservation orgs,and help them fight for what we believe in,

 

also get out and vote,vote out the ones that threw us under the bus

I have to say it's interesting that some of the pro-gun crowd is also anti-gambling. You fight so much for your rights... but only pick and choose which rights/freedoms are ok? The point in fighting for your rights and freedom is that it doesn't really matter "which", it's the fact that the government is telling you no. Haven't we all used the argument to the anti-gun crowd regarding the 1st amendment and asked them how they would feel if they took that away? You can't pick and choose.
