Five Seasons
This sounds like you have never shot a crossbow, but you are well aware of how they perform. sure you can set up a rest in a blind, but what if the deer isn't in front you you where the rest is? Now what? Take the time to hunt with one and then you can tell us how easy it is. You are very well versed in the conjecture and emotion that has been spewed for years. Of course I've never hunted with one. I have indeed shot one at the range, they're impressive. Waiting for the deer to come in front of me? Are you serious? That's no different than gun hunting. You sit and wait till they're in range and you have a lane and you pull the trigger. You just proved my point.
ants
Im not really opposed to the whole xbow thing. I will continue to bow hunt but when I get older and less and less able to draw a bow, I can see myself getting a xbow. That being said I think that there is little arguing that taking a deer with a crossbow is easier than taking one with a bow.
BizCT
Taking a deer with a compound from a tree stand is easier than a crossbow from the ground with no blind Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ants
Yeah but what about an equal playing field? xbow from a stand vs. bow from a stand…..xbow from the ground vs. bow from the ground.
BizCT
Yes, both from the ground with no blind, the compound is tougher than an xbow. I'm against tree stands, it's boring. JFB
And almost 40 years of crossbow hunting in Ohio proves you wrong! If it were mostly guys just switching over from compound to xbows, I honestly would not have opposition to xbows being jammed in the former archery season. But I believe we are going to pick up the bottom of the barrel gun "hunters" who previously picked up a compound bow and quickly figured out they don't have the discipline or patience for archery hunting. If it were for kids or older or disabled, I'm all for xbows in archery. But otherwise, I fear the slobs will ruin a former good thing. It's not going to attract new license holders, it simply gives gun and meat hunters more shots because if that wasn't true, you would have been satisfied with xbows in gun season. In NY, we do very little to nurture the resource... DEC simply wants to control the nuisance and open seasons and hand out tags any way they can.

That's a popular opinion you are likely to see in the not so distant future. Once everyones buddy's start dragging home the lunkers by the horns, there will be a lot of compounders "x'ing over". Just wait and see. A lot of guys here transparent as glass!

I see the same thing. Most slobs have a crossbow all ready. Like was mentioned before hopefully this will help with less wounded animals. But they are slobs so I doubt it as they will push the limits with no knowledge of trajectory factored in. Happy for the old and disabled that could benefit but this should have been allowed by them before.

I don't think so Wooly. But I know of a few hunters that I could see giving up all the extra time to perfect the bow skills and cross over to the dark side, lol. Meat hunters too! But the dedicated ones would never have it, if they could not pull back on a bow they would not use a crossbow instead, they would be done hunting bow. I guess time will tell. One thing I will say its nice to have the option open.

G-Man
Just as in all new implements there will be a big upswing in sales initially.. same as when rifles were allowed, but then common sense will kick in and you will see good crossbows for sale by those who don't know how to hunt but tried it found they couldn't sit still long enough for one to get in range and get frustrated their magic arrow gun didn't work thru the woods at 100 ya. ( a trajectory is not that of a rifle bullets) . .. the real question is what safety class if any will be needed for crossbow... and is it a separate licence.... wooly
Observation. Hogwash! Tell me about these slobs... if you know so much about them, they must be pretty close to you. I think like a lot of guys here, you're just talkin' out your tailpipe now...
sits in trees
One thing about crossbows is they're so damn expensive. Even the used mark on Archery Talk.com has them at exorbitant prices. NFA-ADK
They are wooly, lol. And I really do not feel like stating all there faults or how many of my hunting friends are not dedicated, most of them have a life and hunting is not a high priority, getting the kids from school is. Plain and simple hunting=shooting, most of the lazy hunters I know do not shoot enough or very well. Put them on a bench rest at 50 yards they think that's ok with 20 rounds. Asking them to take a free hand shot is taboo. When they do the results are comical and sad. Now the dedicated hunters I know are a whole different breed. Hunting is not just something they do for turkey in spring and fall along with deer. Hunting is a year round endeavor and passion. Like you said some may use the crossbow and as the popularity grows so will its use.
G-Man
I have friends in Ohio that own both.. they take a bow for an all day sit, lighter and can hang it up, and take their crossbow for a short quick hunt. Most prefer their bow to crossbow, but admit turkey hunting with a crossbow is easier than with a bow. As is ground hunting from blinds, tree stand hunts are almost eexclusively bow, as crossbows are front heavy and hard to position comfortably in an elevated stand. Anyone that knows me, knows damn straight there ain't no BS hiding behind a typical hunter profile, and I invest more time into the outdoors than many could ever hope to. Seeing I already own a x-bow and plan to spend a ton of time becoming proficient with it, I thought you were stereotyping me into the same category as these slobs you know. Don't do that, lol

Plus it will be easier to get my friends more interested as learin a bow takes alot more time

nyantler
I still would like to know how a crossbow hunter interferes with other bow hunters during bow season... is it the noise that will be bothersome? I know, when you are about to draw on a deer you will suddenly get an agree feeling because you will be thinking how you have to draw your bow and the crossbow hunter won't... I would think it would be an advantage to be able to blame a bad day of seeing deer on the evil crossbow hunter that could possibly be killing all the deer in the area. Maybe somebody else has a better explanation... I'm pretty sure I'll be sneaking around the woods with my recurve and wooden arrows giving no thought at all to crossbow hunters. Nomad
My observations are this, today's compounds are easy to use with a short learning curve . Every year guys on the job buy a compound, shoot baseball sized groups from the get go, and kill deer their first year .just like i did close to 30 years ago.i started bow hunting because I felt it was an advantage, ands it's proved to be.bows when I kill my deer, guns for fun with friends . Crossbows are heavy ,bulky, and have little advantage over modern compounds other then drawing. With the way my shoulders are heading, In a few years I may have to buy one though. Ohio has had crossbows in bow season well over 30 years now, the success rate of xbows and compounds were about he same last I checked.
