Fishers in southern tier

Was just squirrel hunting with my boy for awhile...saw 2 fishers thought that was pretty cool. Heard of guys seeing them but never seen on what a cool looking animal even got to watch it climb a tree....

Cool find !Found some fisher tracks where I hunt in 9H last year. First I've seen down there. There's a boatload of them up in Messena NY. Along with martin too.

I saw one in 4O last year in October and 2 more this summer. They are making a come back for sure

I trapped one a couple of years ago . It was a decent size female (45") from nose to the tip of her tail. Just recently got it back from the taxidermist. They are definitely a cool looking furbearer. Wish I had the opportunity to see one in the wild.

Yea it was crazy i knew they were around but to see 2 in separate spots was wild....especially down here in 9x

i'm in 9w and have had them for approximatly 5 years now..been part of dec's fisher study last 2 years.. told they are coming back again this feb. to set up their cam trap again

fishers are bad news, kill a lot of small game. they kill turkeys off the roost at night. all they are is a weasel on steroids. there is a lot more around than people think

Got trail cam video of one tugging on my stand set in 9P a couple years back, my fiancé saw one in 9y as well.

Was out on the boat fishing for bass about a week ago saw a fisher running the rocks on the shoreline. Also saw one a few days ago while walking in to check my trail camera.

Yeah, small game is getting hammered in NY. I have to agree. I like seeing different kinds of wildlife, but between the birds of prey, yotes, fishers, habitat destruction/change, small game seems to be at a severe disadvantage. I guess it is a cycle, and eventually there will be such a small population of our small game, all these predators populations will reduce.

I have seen then in Alaska and Ontario, but I have yet to see one here in Steuben County. They are here though ,and I have seen several trail cam pictures of fishers taken locally.

I also have friends who trap and have caught ( and released) fishers.

In Cayuga county I never saw one until 5 years ago, now I see a couple every year.

Saw 2 last year in 4o while deer hunting. Very cool critter to observe. Looks like a slinky going through the woods.

WV and PA reintroduced fishers to help control a growing population of porcupines. A study of fisher diet in Albany County found they eat mostly grey squirrels there. Since fishers have become more common in Otsego County, porkie numbers seem way down. Fewer in the woods, and fewer dead in the road.

 

If they are such "bad news", my squirrels, rabbits and turkeys weren't told.

I have got them on game camera and have seen them while hunting also. They're killing machines.

Friend of mine saw one about 2 yrs. ago in the Town of Ontario,Wayne Cty. 8F.  I have never seen a Fisher myself.Co-incidently my buddy lived on Fischer Rd.

The dec and biologist have been doing a fisher study for a few years. Seems the habitat that holds small game in the Adk. has been changing forcing the fisher to move south into the southern parts of the state.

They are here. I get them on my game cameras every year. Here's a photo. I wish had had one of these trained "killing machines" in my yard right now. The grafted hickory nuts are almost mature. I had to remove 7 red squirrels in the past week to protect my nuts. Where is a killing machine when you need one.

 

A suggestion: put your game camera on your butchering scraps after deer are processed.

I have seen them where I hunt. It was always out of the same stand so I assumed it was the same one. But  Im sure there are more. They're very cool to watch.
