Snowy/wet/freezing

This has not happened yet to myself but, I have been thinking of this if you are out deer hunting or smallgame and in wet conditions and temp's are at freezing and you firearm freezes/action how do you thaw them out?

However,  GIs  at Chosin Reservoir  during the Korean conflict had that problem with hordes of  mad, murderous Mongolians charging at them firing SMGs and throwning grenades..

 

When thier BARs were frozen, they PEED on the actions to get them going..

Keep tape over barrel, no snow/ rain gets in to freeze. Dosnt change poi.

when sitting in my stand I hunt without gloves. Gun in my lap and my hands in one of those muffs like quartebacks wear when its cold out ( its camo btw and not Bills colors). I have it laying over the receiver and scope. Keeps the receiver warm, scope clear and from the gun from falling to the ground. And a piece of electrical tape over the bore of my ML so the dripping crap doesn't soak my 777 pellets.

Wow- that's just what I was afraid of.

That's the kind of reply you get when a guy has a cold wet muzzle down his pants for too long.

lol... I had that happen maybe 10 years ago or so... Frozen action not the other..  After sitting most of the day in late Nov(started out freezing rain turning to snow with a low in the single digits) a nice 8 point stepped into my shooting lane. i clicked off the safety and pulled the trigger. Nothing, i the exposed slide part of the Mauser action slowly slid forward  with a dull clunk. Not even close to enough force to fire the round. It was dead calm and you would have thought there was a bang the way that buck took off, I never even got a chance to try a second time...

Because I gun shoot left handed......I use guns with top thumb safety switches...I have had those freeze...I take off my glove and let the warm of my hand defrost it. Then dry with paper towels I carry

I love to hunt the wet and cold, and never had a problem. Most likely in NY, as cold as it gets, you probably wont have to worry much unless you have a lot of gunk/grease in your action. Keep your gun clean, and don't use grease or excessive amounts of oil on moving parts in the colder weather, and you should be fine.

X2 , been using balloons over the end of the barrels too.

I cut fingers off of the surgical gloves , roll them up and slip one over the barrel like a condom . I have killed deer with the ML without removing the rubber . Shoot right through them .

I have never had a problem with the action freezing ...... yet .

That is what I thought until it happened to me.. 1st,  and chances are the last time it will ever happen to me . that day had "perfect" conditions...
