Scumbag hunter

Yesterday I shot a nice doe (will post in harvest thread soon) and found a set of tracks with some blood. I stopped my drag and picked up the trail. As I suspected there was a dead doe not more than 50 yards later. I back tracked and found a set of boot tracks no more than 100 yards from the deer. Guy shot and didn't do a damn thing to track it. Very upsetting.

Unfortunately the deer was a loss. Both eyes were gone already. From what I could tell from the boot prints the guy shot turned and walked away. Maybe he thought he missed... either way I talked to the neighbors (also hunters) and found out what vehicle was parked there during the week. That guy better not show his face. I am bent, so are the other guys. I am going to have a talk with the landowners, they are good people and I think they need to know.

It appears that way. 

 

My first season hunting as a 22 year old former Marine I was at my father in laws cabin with his 13 friends from work. My brother in law and I were with a couple of guys on our trail when one pulled up. We saw the buck and he shot and the deer took off. He said, "damn, I missed" 

 

Not knowing any better I started walking away when my brother in law grabbed my arm and said, "Hang on, I want to make sure that deer wasn't hit."  We waited 10 minutes and went to where the deer was and there was a bunch of hair and little blood, but he'd hit the deer. 

 

We tracked for about 200 yards finding more blood and where it laid down. We went about 30-40 yards and the deer stood up and my brother in law, who was in front of me shot it killing it. 

 

By the time we got it field dressed and dragged to a trail it was well past dark. The old guys were eating dinner when we got back for the bike and my father in law asked where we'd been. 

 

I took out the heart from my pocket (in a baggie) and put it on the guys plate that shot it telling him that the liver would be in there too but that was where he'd hit it. 

 

He never came back. I was fine with that

Many years ago I passed on an opening morning huge 6 pt...5 mins later BANG!. Figured neighbor got it...a couple of weeks later I found him in our creek rack caught under a log...neighbors brother shot then never looked...it was foggy and he did think he looked hit...he died 60 yrds away from the stand...I Was ticked!

I was in a hedgerow next to a field heading home. The field had a super dense thicket at the bottom. Heard a shot inside the thicket, a couple hundred yards down the field. 5 deer ran out into the field, and went up the hill into the woods. One of the five did a little circle back into the thicket and wasn't running in a way that looked quite right to me. All of a sudden a "hunter" popped out into the edge of the field. He took one glance to the right, and one to the left and went back into the thicket. A couple of minutes later I heard a car door slam, and the guy took off. Didn't look for tracks, blood or anything. So, I went down and found a huge doe laying there about 4' into the brush. Tagged her up, gutted her out, and away I went. Had I not seen this whole fiasco, that deer would have rotted right there. For some guys if the deer doesn't pile up right there on the spot, they assume it was a miss.

my brother saw a guy shooting at a heard of deer and was not going to look and see if he hit any my brother made him follow one of the blood trails and found a button buck he made him take the deer the guy later had a heart attack not fatal i call it carma

Happens a lot everytime I hear my 1,neighbor shoot,I cringe because unless it drops he doest look. One year I found 2 8pt, a 4pt, and a doe. All gut shot and never tracked. To much bang flop on tv,with no blood trailing,or even tracking shown as its to tramatic for the viewers. It even seems that not following is worse with rifle,as shots are further and even if someone looks they may not be looking in spot deer was standing,as it looks different on ground than from a tree. Glad I was taught to follow every shot up when I was a kid,blood or not follow it as far as possible to.make sure.

I think the average hunter gives up pretty fast if the deer doesn't drop right there or they think they missed. They don't realize that once you shoot your committed to finding that deer or making damn well sure you missed.

I love threads like this.  A boat load of evidence for anti hunting groups to use for their attacks against all hunters.

 

Why don't you guys confront the offenders directly if you have seen them do it?  Posting this crap on this site isn't going to do anything but supply more evidence to the anti's that all hunters are scumbags.

 

In truth, some are, but there are many more that put themselves on a pedestal and constantly speak of the bad ones in an attempt to convince themselves they are superior.  In the mean time the mud they sling at others is getting all over their own blaze orange coveralls.

I like to give guys the benefit of the doubt, so I'll just add that maybe this deer was already wounded and suffering from an encounter with someone else earlier in the season.

The "accused" hunter may have just killed this one and left it lay due to no antlerless tag. I wouldn't leave my boot prints near the deer after having to do that either. I got no problem with someone assuming a "clean miss" in that situation.

From the looks of the deer it was a healthy doe. Was it a mercy kill... possibly, but doubtful. I am comfortable in posting this crap because maybe, just maybe, someone who views this post will do a little more follow up in the field. Also antis can tell from this conversation that many of us do care about the crap that happens out there and not all of us are bad... antis know there are some bad apples regardless of a post on a site, what they might not know is that it pisses legit hunters off to high heaven .

Yea that sucks. I have found a deer that had back legs and straps cut out only. No tag on the deer. And then left.

 

 

Did the round pass threw the deer? I wonder if it was shot with a rifle or shotgun?

Frankly, I am getting a little tired of kowtowing to these bunny-huggers. We are a site that discusses all aspects of hunting, warts and all. The day we have to begin censoring our thoughts and words to satisfy those people is the day they have won. Let's stop arranging our forum discussions around what the antis will or won't do with the things that need discussion. I'm not a big fan of taking our sport into the shadows and cowering before these people just because we have some issues that need discussion and correction.

Suit yourself Doc.  On some threads we have guys complaining we are not concerned about the image hunters present to the general public.  On others, we expose the worst images and make it sound as if it is not only common, but the norm.  Besides, the OP has no idea if this guy was a hunter, a poacher, or just somebody out shooting deer for the heck of it.

 

Most bad publicity hunters get comes directly from hunters themselves.  If I run into something like this, which I can't say I do often since I mostly hunt private land, I handle it with the authorities.  That's the only way you will possibly see results.  Seriously, if you found a dead human in the woods, would you just shake your head and leave?

 

We need to help police ourselves if a wildlife law is broken.  I think observers of this thread could also make a good case that we don't.  "If you see something, say something."

 

I feel if we don't take action on these issues, it shows we don't really care.  If it pisses you off, why not report it?

I have met the shooter before actually. He is a hunter I ran into him in the woods and shook his hand opening weekend. Dont assume I didn't take action either.
