Considering he pretty much coined fascism... fas·cism ˈfaSHˌizəm/ noun noun: fascism; noun: Fascism; plural noun: Fascisms an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization. synonyms: authoritarianism, totalitarianism, dictatorship, despotism, autocracy;More (in general use) extreme right-wing, authoritarian, or intolerant views or practice. Mr VJP
Impassioned Socialist "In 1902, Benito Mussolini moved to Switzerland to promote socialism, and quickly gained a reputation for his magnetism and remarkable rhetorical talents. While engaging in political demonstrations, he caught the attention of Swiss authorities and was eventually expelled from the country. In 1904, Mussolini returned to Italy and continued promoting a socialist agenda. He was briefly imprisoned and, upon release, became editor of the organization's newspaper, Avanti (meaning "Forward"), which gave him a larger megaphone and expanded his influence." He may have been considered right wing later on, but as my Dad always used to say, a leopard doesn't change his spots.

Mussolini in power in Italy was far right wing when he killed people and pushed fascism. Plain and simple, the guy is far right in any responsible consideration of the left-right spectrum. As someone who was certified to teach this content in each of the 50 states (I no longer keep that certification current), I never heard a compelling argument for him being a leftist. I mean, for example, in HIS OWN national newspaper, he is quoted across the spectrum of historical documents with stating this in reference to his nationalist/fascist policies: “The Socialists ask what is our program? Our program is to smash the heads of the Socialists.” ―Benito Mussolini The guy literally took a dump on socialists. adkbuck
Lets get this straight. The term right and left is pretty much meaningless in todays world. You have two fundamental philosophies to government, one wants to centralize government power and that wants to preserve (or conserve) individual and religious freedoms. Actually the Democratic Party and the so called "modern day liberals" (which are not really "liberal" at all) have much more in common with the Nazi's and the Fascists than they are willing to admit and are are the opposite of conservatives who are the true liberals. The modern day liberals (aka progressives) are for the centralization of power and bigger government along with the diminishing of individual rights and religious freedoms. They have much in common with the effective and practiced policies of Nazi's, fascists and the actual practice of so-called communist states which have used the façade of socialistic democracy to achieve centralization of power before they devolve into dictatorships (which they all do eventually). The term "Liberal" prior to the emergence of the "progressive movement" in the early 20th century meant one that believed in conserving liberty and the preservation of individual freedoms. Hence conservatives are the "true Liberals" in today's world. The term liberal was hijacked in the early to mid 20th century. Using the term liberal, progressives like Franklin Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were able to fundamentally change the role of government in American society by expanding it under the guise that more regulation meant more freedom. The opposite was true, and they knew it. Edited February 25, 2015 by adkbuck
