I am looking on line for hand warmers as my box of 40 prs. from 2 years ago is almost empty. I bought a box from BJ's on sale for around $20. they came with bonus foot warmers. I see several brands out there now and was wondering if any one has any experience with them. Grabber is the most popular brand but I see Heat works, Hot hands, Blue dot, etc. I can get heat works for $23/box of 40prs. just don't know if they work as well as the Grabbers did? Any thoughts?

Another use for my food saver...when hunts are cut shot for what ever reason...preferably shooting something...Thanks

The 1st time I saw Grabber Mycoal warmers was in  the take-out line of a Jewish deli in downtown Indianapolis. I used them for years before they became popular W/hunters in that area. I even made my own toe warmers W/masking tape.

 

If you want to save the warmers after short hunts, place them in a Zip-lock bag, suck the air out W/a straw in the corner & seal them. Once oxygen is cut off, the chemical reaction ceases. I don't know how long they will keep after that, but I have used them after a week stored that way.

My sister in law gave me a box of Little Hotties ( 10 pair ) . They didn't last as long as the Hot Hands .

My wife gave me a pair or re-usable hand warmers . You have to snap / pop a clip and it starts a reaction that starts them warming . As they cool off they stiffen . To recharge them , you drop them in boiling water or put them in a microwave and the stuff inside returns to a liquid state . They work pretty good but I forget that I have them .

Years ago ( many years ago ) I had a hand warmer that operated on lighter fluid . That baby would get hot and smelled of the fluid but I shot several deer while using it . I think it was a Zippo brand .

They still make them. My son bought one & used it last deer season.Yes it is a ZIPPO.

 

My take on odor is that if they are downwind, human odor is going to raise the red flag the quickest.

 

I used to smoke & the smoke from the cigarette was a good way to gauge the wind direction & speed. I think that the motion associated with smoking is far more likely to spook deer than the smoke itself. I have had deer blow at me when I was caught patting myself down looking for my cigarettes, lighter, etc.

I buy Hot Hands and am just finishing up Wicked warmers by LL Bean that I got as a gift.  Prefer the Hot Hands, they last a bit longer, especially the foot warmers.  It really sucks to change foot warmers in the cold and snow, so I stick to Hot Hands Toe Warmers for those.

 

Somewhere is my grandfather's Zippo hand warmer.  Wanted to try it out this past year, so i picked up fuel for it but couldn't find it.  Guess it drifted back to my parents house on a trip for my son to hunt with his grandfather on private land.

 

I always toss some into a emergency bag and a couple in the glove box for the unexpected need.

I was able to purchase some insoles a few years ago that have a slot that holds the Hand Warmers . They have a slot in the toe area that has a styrofoam insert that can be remove to a hand warmer can go in that spot . During warm weather the foam piece can be put in it's place .

I just bought a pair of the ThermaCel inserts for my boots, I have not tried them yet. There was a daily deal and I got them for $69.95 delivered.

 

My youngest son can't take the cold and bought a pair of these . He said they aren't that good and don't stay warm for long . I tried a pair of battery operated socks many years ago and they didn't work worth a darn .

that sound more comfortable than sticking the other ones on the underside of your socks.

 

The stick on heaters are fine when you are sitting but horrid when you walk, especially if you have foot issues.  They are the real deal IMO and can really make your LONG day 14' in the air very comfortable. :)

Last season I made a mistake with the foot warmers . My feet get cold quick when I am just sitting . So , in all my brilliance I put toe warmers on before leaving the house . I also put hand warmers in my insoles figuring my feet should stay warm . It worked fairly well . The next day one of my toes bothered me but I didn't think much of it . The second day I checked out the bottom of the toe and removed a circular piece of skin from the bottom of a toe about 1/4 inch in diameter . It was painful for a few days and finally healed . I think I may have burned a toe with the warmers , got a blister and it broke . Gotta be careful with those things .
