How About an Official 2015 Gardening Thread?y

Last frost date by me is May 30 th. It was 29 degrees by me last night and going to be 30 degrees over the weekend at night.So I did not start anything, even seed inside ,Been there done that and lost everything in the past.Might start the seeds indoors middle of May.. Some plants in the past I started indoors and some seeded direct into the garden at the end One did not do any better then the other.

Too busy cutting splitting and stacking next years fire wood any way.

I have been in "phase 2" for several days. Moving the trays to the south facing enclosed back porch, bringing thenm in to the heated rack at night.

Germination of individual peat pellet (some of which have 2-3 seeds in each) is as follows.

Steakhouse tomato-----------------------------------13 of 14 pellets have plants sprouting *

Beefmaster tomato------------------------------------13 of 15 pellets have plants sprouting

Park's Whopper tomato------------------------------15 of 15 pellets have plants sprouting

Super Sweet 100 Hybrid Cherry Tomato--------15 of 15 pellets have plants sprouting

California Wonder green sweet pepper-----------11 of 19 pellets have plants sprouting*

Big Bertha giant green sweet pepper---------------4 of 15 pellets have plants sprouting

Karma red sweet pepper-------------------------------7 of 15 pellets have plants sprouting

Nikita orange sweet pepper----------------------------3 of 15 pellets have plants sprouting

Early Jalapeño Hybrid pepper-------------------------100% germination failure!

Sun King broccolli-------------------------------------------3 of 44 pellets have plants sprouting*

* Odd number of pellets due to pet "curiosity" attrition.

At 1st I thought it was the cat, but I found long thin white hairs in the last tray that was raided leading me to believe it was Max, my Brittany that was the culprit. I have since left the covers on while the trays were in the low heated shelf.

The dismal results of the broccoli are probably due to using heat as "growalot" suggested. I will replant the pellets today, including the 3 that sprouted as they don't seem very vigorous. I'll leave then on the porch on the lowest rack that will be out of direct sunlight.

Not sure why the Jalapeños failed to germinate. I'm thinking bad seed.

Got a late start on it this year, but I just cleaned most of the old tomato plants and pruned most of my fig trees. My peach trees are about to blossom with some starting to show the pink flowers. Hopefully I'll prune my grape vine tomorrow.

I have first set of peas...shelling and pods the spinach in between ...snow due this coming week so I have rototilled 1/4 of the garden for the brassicas and greens to go in fast...will work on the rest a little at a time...may also put in a new strawberry patch...I have the cabbage up and a few tomatoes but nothing else yet...just planted the broccolli and will start melons /cukes/ squash (winter) tonight...I have some spraying to do but the winds have been wild...

Started Watermelon & cantaloupe today.

11 peat pellets planted with Harvest Moon Seedless Watermelon (icebox variety)

25 peat pellets planted with Crimson Sweet Watermelon

15 peat pellets planted with Burpee Hybrid Cantaloupe

15 peat pellets planted with Burpee Ambrisia Hybrid Cataloupe

I recycled pellet from the failed broccolli & jalapeño planting.

My peas and spinach are up and growing great don't see lettuce or swiss chard yet...Well I will have dozens and dozens of cabbage broccoli but the tomatoes and peppers are spotty...may have to buy.......brussel sprouts are OK if this weather keeps up the pole beans and regular beans will go in...Now I have two large domed deli trays filled with melons...a few dozen each of two kinds of water melons and two different kinds of cantaloupe....I believe the wet area I just sprayed for weeds and I have planted in sweet corn and turnips for us and the deer will be the melon patch...I have enough fence to close the area off to deer or I could put a temp electric...the area around goat barn will be the sweet corn this year

Wife got the seed trays planted this past weekend and got a couple starter tomato and pepper plants, while I napped from hunting and I did the first mowing of the yard in the evening.

 

Hope to get the garden soil turned over after work and perhaps do a little expansion of the garden area (all done by hand, shovel, mattock).  My youngest will come out to help plant seeds, forget the older two for getting any help. Oldest lately is saying "get used to me being gone soon for college."  He got a list to take care of if he wants a graduation party. 

 

I usually get stuck with all the weeding and harvesting (except for the raspberries, they tend to disappear and I find someone with purplish-red finger tips around the house).

 

Wife picked up some left over wire fencing from a friend of hers. Have to head out to get fence posts to put up some fencing around the planned apple tree replacement later this week. Got to keep the deer away from it.

I've got all my seeds done the otherday. I bought a few plants already but I started a bunch from seed a few days ago and put them in the green house. I have a garden on each side of the yard this year and I plan on having a lot.

Started some seeds this weekend. Not planning on a huge garden sq ft wise, but a little variety in the works. Carrots are way late for me and I may not even bother at this point getting them in the ground. Doing some potato, beans, peas, cucumbers, and tomato.

Onions, beets, radish,kale and leeks are in the ground and growing great with this heat.

Everything else is in flower pots on the window sills and not going in the ground until after the first of next month.( that is after the last frost ) by us.

I planted Coreless Nantes last year in June & had huge, sweet carrots through late summer/early fall.

My melons are starting to sprout...2 seeds per dixie cup...it is going to be a very big melon patch.....

Mine got woody tasting and spicy if planted too late. I grow little finger because I have little soil structure and full sizes were getting root bound/splitting after about 6" or so.

My cantelouopes are doing great & I have a few Crimsom Sweet watermelons spouting, but the Moon & Stars seedless watermelons are not sprouting at all yet.

I would like to get sweet corn planted this week. I plant Northern Exra Sweet (Sh2 hybrid 67 days) should start bearing in mid July. I usually plant 4-25' rows every 10 days for an extended harvest into Labor Day.

i've got seedlings started; 24 zucchini, 12 big mamma paste tomato, 12 roma tomato, and 24 sweet pepper.  haven't started melon or pumpkins yet.

We had quite the system at my old house from the previous owners, i have pictures somewhere but essentially it was 4 6'x12' beds with drip irrigation from a rain barrel.

 

this year we just did something simple down here. Growing season starts earlier and things are coming along nice. this is from last week.

280 garlic..and still transplanting

60 broccoli ..and still transplanting

4...20ft rows of peas...6in high

3... 20ft rows of spinach...ready to thin

1 row of mixed greens /lettuce

1 row of red chard

13 hot peppers...still transplanting

10 eggplants

 

I have so much more to plant70 or so water/musk melons and dozens and dozens of tomatoes ..all my squash, and cukes, beets 3 types of cabbage(dozens of transplants),Brussels sprouts a couple of dozen...ect..ect..

I have so much planted and only a bit less than 1/3 of the garden planted...I  had to do some more weed killing in the other sections and get the tractor in there to scoop up some piles of rocks...I removed the blk mulch off of 2 big sections for the area needs to be turned and worked in general...found a 6ft wide ant hill under one section that got killed...I killed a lot of ant hills this year,...and Oh the gypsy moths and the tent caterpillars along with those nasty green "inch worms" are ALL over the place...so much for a bad winter killing them....I need to cultivate around all my young fruit trees and plant the extra garlic I grew this winter..looks like I will spray after these rains as well.

In for a break ..sun is a bit much out there...I tilled another section of the garden limed and raked rocks. I set up 2 16 ft. long 5ft high mesh fences to hold pole beans then planted them, also dug another 24 holes to plant remaining swt pepper plants. When I go back out I'll install the two remaining mesh fences to grow the rest of my tomatoes on. Plant more beets...squash and Brussel sprouts...gotta run...

Been eating the lettuce. Beans are coming in and everything else doing well. Not sure when to harvest the yellow onions, never planted them before.
