With a total of 18 gas engines, I switched half of them, including all of the 2-strokes and infrequently used 4-strokes, to ethanol free two years ago when it became available again locally.   It has made a world of difference in maintenance and ease of starting.   I would pay $1.00 more a gallon for it if I had to and probably still save money and aggravation.   We continue to use the cheapest 87 octane 10% ethanol stuff in the four-strokes that get more frequent usage.  For anything that you start on average of less than once a week, ethanol-free is the way to go.   With falling oil costs, I doubt we will have to put up with the ethanol fuel for too much longer.   That should bring down the cost of corn and fertilizer also.    I have heard that it costs more energy to make ethanol than it saves.

Theres a big push against ethanol now. The greenies finally figured out that the pollution put out by ethanol is worse (like scientists have been saying all along), it results in more pollution because of decreased efficiency, and its causing global food prices to go up and water shortages out west due to irrigation needs of corn out there. Its bad bad bad.

I was going to load my Honda Foreman ATV on the trailer last night . Couldn't get it started . Kept the battery up and cranked it a lot but no good . It backfired a couple times which isn't good . Gave up . Tried to start it when I got home today and still no good . I siphoned the gas out and replaced with Ethanol Free gas ..... nada !

Pulled some covers off and yanked the spark plug . Lots of carbon ! Cleaned the plug as best I could and re-gapped the plug . Put it back and it almost started . Scooted up to the Polaris dealer and was able to get a plug . Gapped it , (said a prayer ) put it in and voila , it started right up . I thought I was going to have to haul the Honda to Canandaigua to have it repaired .

I was using 87 octane gas that has 10 percent ethanol and adding the Marine Formula Sta-Bil but think I will stick with the Ethanol Free gas from now on .

Anyway , I got lucky .

I literally just got done putting new carb in neighbors 01 450 foreman...tried cleaning and soaking nothing helped bought new carb poof she's back to being a honda

I was lucky that I was able to get a spark plug from the Polaris Dealer and get the Honda running . If not it would have been one heck of a tough drag with that opening day doe !  Spark plug and Ethalol Free gas $8 + Honda ATV Running .......

I always use the 91 ethanol free stuff, with a shot of stabilizer. Never had an issue. We got down to camp Tue. and my buddys Yamaha 600 wouldn't start.. Its been sitting for months. We tried fresh gas, starting fluid, spraying gum out in the carb..nothing worked. He had to bring it to a small engine place for a carb rebuild.. $140.00 , He almost didn't have it for opening day. Mechanic told him that the old crappy gas gummed the crap out of everything. You could smell the varnish in the carb…Use the ethanol free stuff and stabile. Its only a few bucks..well worth it..

Try AMSOIL Quickshot.  I don't start my bike, quad, chain saw, weed eater, boat, or lawn mower without it in the tank.  It's a stabilizer and cleaner so it will not only prevent issues associated with ethanol, but it will clean up gunk that's already built up.  Link in my sig.

I use the crappy gas when I'm running my machines frequently but when it's time to put the up for a while I make sure to run Ethanol Free with Sta-Bil through the carb then Sea Foam into the intake for good measure.

    K-100  beats them all. Other then the ethanol free gas.  Try it you'll like it.

Stabil is not an ethanol treatment guys. It wont protect your carbs and fuel lines from the damage it does.

 

I use this stuff, have for years. I run ethanol gas in all of my stuff and have no issues as long as this is mixed in. I started using it after my father and I had to have 4 different carbs rebuilt and fuel lines replaced in our small engines.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know that. I see Sta-bil does make an ethanol treatment product, but the regular Sta-bil makes no claims about doing anything for ethanol effects. I need to do something about that.

Regular Stabil for the non ethanol gas and stabil ethanol formula for the regular 87 Oct. gas. There are several other brands, other than Stabil , that work well too. Just read the labels and make sure they treat the ethanol gas.

You can also buy Enzyne fuel treatment that takes the moisture out of the gas. The stuff I use you can get at Wally-World for about $5 and you don't have to worry about using too much. I use in my quad, snowblower, and lawn mower. Works great.
