turkeyfeathers
My brother was hunting in 8G this morning. There's a very large stand of pines near his blind. Deer always get pushed here. He never walks thru them but today he did. He found 6 deer skeletons of apparent winter kill from last year. Here's where it gets weird. He saw a cherry brandy bottle in the pines. Went to pick it up to take home and throw it out. It was marking a 12-14 foot trench about 8" wide and 6" deep covered in pine needles to hide it. Inside the trench was a white lye like or moist loose type of white powder. We have no idea on what the heck it is. He did scoop a small bit of the material Hopefully my buddy can test it for results. Don't think the dead deer skeletons are related but you never know. Any thoughts ? Paula
That is odd, seems like the rain would have washed it all away unless it was fairly new

Four Season Whitetail's
Sounds like maybe someone hiding a kill-Bury site. The powder is prob the stuff the guys use here on Ft Drum..They leave the deer off the road and pour that powder on it...Couple 3-4 days the deer is all but gone. Larry
I would have it checked and call the dec. I would like to know what town I also hunt 8g and can you keep us posted. one more thing its kind of odd to have 6 deer die together as a winter kill around here no real deer yards like up north
Lawdwaz
Is it near a home/farm or trail? Could be where some home-butcher is dumping his carcasses after the deed is done. OR...........could be dead humans in there??
jim335
I think it's powdered lime that they use to dump on dead animals to make them decompose faster. I'd be careful with it, could be poison. I would report it to DEC. 8" wide isn't very wide to dump a carcass. It's basically wide enough for a shovel. Maybe that's what killed the deer. WingNut
It's obviously to small to bury anything in. I would tend to think it is more like a feed troth with some sort of attractant, like "Deer Cane". Or maybe bait and poison for Coyotes. Doc
The property wouldn't happen to belong to a farmer with crop damage would it? He may be running his own version of deer damage control....lol.
