Anyone use a fishfinder on their boat and if so which one. I just ordered a Garmin Striker 4 portable one and looking for tips on how to properly use it.

I played around with this one last month at a hunting and fishing expo. Seemed really cool.

Ive been using an Eagle Fishmark 480 for at least 10 years now. In a portable case that I use on the boat and out on the ice. For boat the transducer is mounted on a 2-3 foot stick that is clamped to the stern. For the ice it is mounted on an empty tip up. Works great in both instances. If the screen speed is maxed out you can get real time feedback that works great on the ice. Cant seem to fish without it these days!

I just went from old lowrance x49's to Raymarine dragonfly's a 5 and a 7 on my boat. Awesome machines with chirp down vision,2d sonar and GPS the only problem is you cant link them together. I wish I had some screen shots on this computer its a impressive little machine.

Anyone recommend a decent priced one (cheap and basic) for a rowboat with a trolling motor

The Lowrance Cuda. For about $100. I've used Lowrance products on my bassboats for over twenty years and they have served me well. The Cuda is all you will need for the set up you decribed. And I'm sure it will serve you well.

As my original post states I brought the Garmin Striker 4 portable online at Dicks Sporting Goods for $200. Its scheduled to be delivered today so maybe I can go out and play with it this weekend, if not then definitely next weekend, I will let you know how it works then.

Fishfinder has arrived. Not too crazy (insane maybe lol) about how transducer attaches to boat with suction cup, I don't see it as being easy to do once boat in water due to the fact that I would have to hang way over transom to properly attach it to bottom of johnboat. Going it install it instead onto trolling motor.

You could also make a mounting bracket for yourself with just a strip of aluminum bar stock a clam grip and some bolts from home depot. I use that to make my fish finder easily portable on my reservoir boats

We use a Lowrance Elite 7 HDI on Lake O. Its a nice unit. No major complaints. The downscan imaging is worthless for the type of fishing we do, but probably useful for people fishing in shallow waters. I like the 83/200 transducer and it works well enough to identify thermoclines.

if your boat has a trolling motor, get the brand that links with it.  I believe that lowrance and motorguide motors connect, and hummingbird links with minn kota motors. You think you don't want / need it, until you try it, then you won't ever go without.  It is soooo nice to set a course on your fishfinder and have the trolling motor follow it, or follow a contour or depth.

If your not trolling, you can save money and get the cheapest at the size you want.  Have had or used Lowrance, hummingbird, RayMarine, and they all work very well, have pretty much the same features, resolution, options, etc.

Walk around the display at cabelas and compare.  You get what you pay for with all of them, some have a bit nicer appearance ( I do like the lowrance touch screens)

as a suggestion, I would get a better model with the sidescan sonar, really helps with finding the fish when first scouting the lake.  And I do use the DSI, usually have the screen in quadrants, with chart, sonar, sidescan, and DSI all viewing at the same time.

And I primarily fish for Walleye in Erie, and some salmon fishing on Lake O, bass in the lower river
