BizCT
Anybody go on a recent successful rifle elk hunt? Thinking it may be time for one (2017 or 2018). In a few days, I will have 3 PP's in WY for Elk, otherwise I have no PP's anywhere else. Looking for something reasonably price ($5K or less). Not looking to spend $10K to shoot a giant. Just want a decent chance at a 5x5 or better. Thanks in advance.
ATbuckhunter
Look up randy newburg on youtube. He gives tons of info on DIY public land elk hunts and hunts that you don't need PP points for. I think he had a break down where somewhere where he showed that you can easily take a DIY elk hunt for less than 2k if you go with someone else. Let me know what you end up doing because I'd love to go on a DIY elk hunt.
grampy
I've never been on an elk hunt. But if I did, I'd be looking for exactly what you posted Biz. It's on my bucket list as I get closer to retirement.

ATbuckhunter
http://www.rmef.org/TheHunt/Before/PlanforGrand.aspx That's exactly it. While I was looking I was actually able to find cheap flights for as low as 150 bucks, so driving isn't 100 percent necessary.
DirtTime
Why not just do a DIY hunt Biz? Less money I would imagine.
dmandoes
look at kiowa outfitters. i drew a nm oryx tag a few years ago and used them. i was very happy with the service i got. i would have done it diy, but for a three day hunt i saved money by going with them.
BizCT
Why not just do a DIY hunt Biz? Less money I would imagine. Not necessarily. I'd be going alone. Flying, not driving. Not interested in wasting multiple days driving. So if I'm not with an outfitter, I would need to rent a truck. Packing out an elk alone, probably isn't much fun either. So far, the top pick is this place http://www.rockingrhunting.com/ which has great reviews from several hunters (archery and rifle). They have a cool trail cam page going on Bowsite as well. If anyone else is interested, let me know....the hunts are 2x1, so I would be with random hunter anyway. BizCT
Ah, figured you would be going with your dad Biz. Sorry about that. He may come to watch, but wouldn't be hunting. He shot an elk in the early 90's and doesn't have the interest in shooting another. He wouldn't be of much help to me packing out anyway. He's got some back problems, etc.
moog5050
Looks like over the counter for everything except first rifle. I would really like to go for archery, although I know that's not your thing Biz.

Actually, the turn-off for me is that if I flew, I'd be limited to how much meat I'd be bringing home. Plus I don't have room in the house for an elk mount if I did kill one. Colorado would be my first pick, some areas are easy to draw tags, and if you want to pony up a little extra, they have a Ranching for Wildlife program where you can hunt free-range elk outside of the regular seasons, no draw required. Check out Greg Merriam, he offers a lot of discounted hunts, some guided, some DIY.

BKhunter
Biz, I am 90% going out to WY this year for a DIY elk hunt and will most likely have 3 PP next year as well. If you're interested in a DIY hunt anywhere let me know. I would be flying anywhere I go as well.
