G-Man
just saw that nys wants to charge 25$ to register bike every year... hmmm, to broad i'd hate to register kids bikes but i see what they are after...next they should hit the hikers/crosscountry skiers who use statelands and trails.... we as hunters pay for the maint of these trails and lands maybe some non-hunters paying in won't be to bad! steve863
I have a hard time visualizing a bicycle registration. Exactly how will it be enforced? Will cops be stopping every adult and kid on a bike on neighborhood streets and parks to check if it is registered? Just wait until a cop doesn't get to a serious crime scene in time because he was issuing an 8 year old a summons. Unlike motorized vehicles bikes don't wear down highways or pollute the environment. Citizens should be encouraged to use bicycles where practical and not discouraged. Never mind the health benefits one could get by riding one. I think many hiking trails in NYS are actually maintained by private organization and volunteers. I don't think the DEC spends a great deal on trails in comparison to most things they need to handle. I think the bike registration idea is bad just because its not practical. But, be careful about asking the hikers, bikers, bird watchers, etc. to start toting the load. Start charging them and hunting will start to have less of a say in things (relatively speaking).
steve863
A safety inspection is also needed?? Exactly who will be inspecting all these bikes? I can guarantee anyone that this will never pass. A parent buys a little kid a usable bike at a garage sale for $10 and then he has to get it inspected (which would surely cost money) and then pay a $25 registration fee? This law will get ZERO compliance.
G-Man
I can see your point of less of a say, but our fees wouldn't have to increase....not sure about the bike thing but i would like to see a park stateland use fee, included with hunting licence and snowmobile/atv reg, $25for 5 days $5 for 1day use, $40 for year. would spread the cost out and keep our cost from increasing. Snowmobiles are a good example...they're already a HUGE impact on hunting seasons and legislation....giving them more of a financial position and that just become worse for hunters. You'll be creating the same groups for each respective hobby if you start charging...less voice in a bigger crowd is not usually a recipe for success in this situation. I agree with your position and reasoning, but the implications outweigh the cost increase imo.
HectorBuckBuster
Well this seems stupid to us way up here in Upstate NY out in the country of small towns. But in NYC bikes are a different world there. You get people just zipping all over the place in the city, and mist times if they hit some one or a car, they just get back up and take off. Have seen this happen. If someone on a bike strikes a person and injures them who pays for it?
nyantler
Just another example of government control... bike registrations will kill the bicycle market and we lose one more freedom... our taxes are meant to pay for all the public trails, parks and even roadways where bikes are riden... the reason thaty want to put a new "TAX" on bikes is to make up for the misappropriation of our tax dollars. But, many will let yet another tax be imposed on an already strapped population here in upstate NY. Sorry guys but I just think it is just so wrong! HectorBuckBuster
Look at how many taxes as a sportsman we pay. Those hikers, and bikers, and runners that use all the state land then want to ban hunting on them, probley don't pay anything or very little to help with the up keep of the land. And we all pay for the upkeep of the land through our incometaxes and sales taxes and all th other taxes already imposed..
G-Man
Joe , i agree with you this is wrong along with so many other taxes that are put in place to make up for misappropreated tax dollars. Just i see it as happening....more taxes that is and it will be only a matter of time before they try to tax the air we breathe... can't see them actually cutting spending or spending wisely. nyantler
some of the responses on this thread are a good example of how easily some people will buy into a new tax... they would rather harp on another citizen that just wants to enjoy an activity before questioning a lawmaker on why the money we already gave for the purpose of maintaining public lands and trails was misused. We are our own worst enemies by continuing to allow Albany to rape our lives and livelyhoods without question. Whoever is sponsoring such a bill to impose a tax in bicycles should be voted out of office in my opinion.. because it shows how out of touch that lawmaker is with his or her citizens

The government is way out of control, this is just another example. They just keep draining people more and more everytime you turn around instead of making the cuts they need to. This bloated government cannot last and needs to be severely downsized on every level, federal down to local.
nyantler
Absolutely.. how could any NYer agree with any new tax that Albany might try to shove down our throats... we are at a place in time when we need to take back what is rightfully ours.. get rid of ALL the clowns in Albany that do not understand or live in the same world as you and I. I am all for a society using tax money for the betterment of it's communities and the individuals that live in that community.. I am sick of paying taxes to fund the lavish lifestyles of my State and Federal elected officials.
fasteddie
I can just picture getting pulled over while riding a bike and being requested to show the Registration and Inspection Sticker . Or ......... your plate being stolen and used on someone else's bike . ??? NY --- The Empire State ----- my ass !!!
WNYBuckHunter
One large part of the answer to our problems would be term limits to every single political office from town board to congress. No more lifetime benefits and retirement for ANY politician. In other words, an end to career politics. We would see alot less of this nonsense. 132 eight pointer
Read my lips,no new taxes.I agree with the disagree-ers,more taxes is not the answer!Better management and less waste is.This state needs to run within it's means not tax and spend or pass legislation before funding has been appropriated. WNYBuckHunter
Politics should not be a career, just my opinion. You cant force anyone to stay in a state, but you can prevent them from collecting tax money to line their pockets for the rest of their lives. Speaking of welfare....
