i'm only 34 and can appreciate that planning.  i'm in fairly decent shape too.  i could only imagine it's a lot worse when you're older.

seems like a terrible idea but wouldn't doubt it.  local building inspector could check it out.  just because someone makes a determination doesn't mean he wouldn't necessarily say something different.  at least Belo would know then.  in all honesty sending metal fasteners up through it might not fly either if you get too particular.  depends on what's done.  you brought up a valid point with the fire rating though.  little ashamed i didn't think of it.  houses can be quite a bit different than commercial though.

on the first comment----go fu....awe never mind I am old. lol

On the fire rating. single layer of 5/8" rated drywall, taped joints and studs no more than 2' on center  would be fine IIRC. Solid metal penetrating it are fine with fire calk around it per manufactures recommendations.  I had a brother in law that bought a house. in the inspection the garage hatch was noticed and written up. It had to be corrected. Once he moved in he put it right back. (against my recommendations)

we use a cheap 2500# ATV winch. I think it was $80 at harbor freight. It runs on 12 volt so we tossed an old car battery on a shelf next to it and put a trickle charger on it to keep it up during the season.

https://www.harborfreight.com/2500-lb-atvutility-electric-winch-with-wireless-remote-control-61297.html

ours has a wired remote. This one is wireless. also pick up the mounting plate for $5 to make mounting it easier

should have mentioned the winch is wall mounted and the cable through a simple pulley at the ceiling.

and about the Garage ceiling. Depending on the configuration and how the fire barriers ar it may be "out of code" to have a hatch in the ceiling. That said. I would add one too. just be careful adding weight to trusses by storing a lot of crap up there.

i don't plan to store anything in the garage attic. There is separation between garage attic and house attic, i too was looking into the code stuff.

the wall winch pulley idea is one i was thinking about doing too... maybe easier but not as clean.

Not to hijack, but I just hoist my deer up with a hand winch over a single truss beam.   I don't have a hatch either in the garage, but do have one in the house.  Is that a bad idea?  Too much weight for a single truss beam?

I think it's probably "safe" but from what I read before i did my last setup it's not ideal. It's so easy to just buy a 2x6 and spread that wait across 3 joists and significantly improve your safety.

that bold is correct IF the wall is. I have seen many garages that rely on the ceiling as the barrier.

Yeah i believe the previous owner had the garage finished after the house was built. My garage is attached but the attics are not. The home is 2 stories and the garage is off the side and has its own attic. Attached is the best pic i can find on my phone. the garage is on the right behind the evergreens.

Deal.  Need to get me an electric winch.  Takes 3 days to crank em up by hand.

i'm getting the 440 i posted in the first thread. 25% off right now. $75 for an electric winch? Sign me up lol

LOL, I think I was pulling down on the hide. The guy on the left of the deer looks like hes about to shank it.

the pulling down of the hide is actually something some guys forget about with load calcs. That can be a lot of added force/weight to an already heavy (hopefully lol) deer.

Haven't read all the replies but an 8' ceiling with that winch plus a gambrel will put you closer to 6 1/2ft my suggestion is mount the winch to the wall and run pulleys up to where you want the deer hanging. If you use this approach that hoists capacity will be cut in half because you wouldn't be able to double the cable back as it is in the pic.

yeah i brainfarted on that, they're 10' with drywall. I don't know what was happening in my brain the other night when i measured. When i got home yesterday and i was looking at it, i'm like... if i'm 6'... lol. They're not 8. The hoist is about 8" without the hook. It's still not ideal but I can always lop off some legs.

I think I have a new plan that doesn't involve the attic. I am going to get up and peak through the gable vent though. I want to know if I have trusses or not. It'll help me feel better.

Anyhow, the hoist has 4 threaded bolt holes at the corner. There are used to attach the bracket (without nuts). So I'm thinking I will just mount the hoist to the 2x6 like in the picture I posted earlier and lag bolt the 2x6 over the span of 3 joists. This will be the simplest but perhaps not the most ideal instal. If it doesn't work from a height prospective I cant just undo it and patch the holes. I do not plan to lift anything heavier than a deer or maybe the front end of my rider. I do suggest anyone who i have inspired to get the 25% harbor freight coupon and head down there before monday or go online (have to pay shipping). Great deal.

I probably wont get to this project for a while but I'll end up being somewhere left of the light bulb.

I posted a video of my winch a few years ago . It was on photobucket and in the DIY forum . Bought a 2500# winch at Harbor Freight for $50 and a couple pulleys . Used a 12 volt mower battery . See if this works for a video .

Fast Eddie's Elec Deer Winch.wmv

your video works. I like this idea too, although i'd prefer a/c and it appeared to get expensive at that point. Either way I'm drilling into my ceiling and I'm tight on wall space with all the tools hanging. I would also think this becomes a 2 person job if your winch remote isn't close to the deer?

Could I do something similar to my last setup but by some pipe or beam instead of a 2x6?

I have the same winch in my garage but have no ceiling in the garage. I simply nailed two 2x4's horizontally across two roof supports, slid a piece of 3/4" steel pipe through the brackets on the winch and rest he pipe on the 2x4's. It sets about 2 feet above where a ceiling would be and the control hangs down to about eye level. Would only take about 15 minutes to move it  need be.

Don't we have a resident building inspector that frequents the site ? I could have sworn there was one.

Yes we do have a NYS Building Inspector here.

He does mostly commercial buildings but certainly will know the residential code on this.  Heck, IIRC he's used my winch and scale a few times in his own garage.  :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I finally installed the 1320lb rated hoist.  660lb if not doubled but that is plenty even for buckzilla.  Bolted it to a 2x12 that spans 6 trusses.  Hoisted me up easy enough so it should be good.  Might cut some type of cover to enclose the hole.  Needed about 18"x18" to maneuver the 2x12 with hoist into place.  Should be much more convenient than the hand winch.

Thought about that route too... worried about moisture and bugs getting up there though. I'm working to do mine this weekend too.

Don't you have roof vents?   Moisture doesn't concern me.  Ventilation in an attic is a good thing.  Reason for baffles. Bugs not too much either but perhaps attaching some mesh or screen is a good idea

I'm sure you're fine, especially if it's not insulated. Most garages don't even have ceilings. I guess I'm just leery of putting a hole somewhere that didn't have one before haha.

My wife was less than thrilled.  Lol. I might put some screen up there.  Now you have me thinking about wasp nests.

I am surprised to see and hear about all the electric winches.  Those don't seem like they would be worth it to me, especially the 12 volt models.  Batteries are a pain to mess around with.   I just use cheap little multiple pulley block and tackles that were about $15 ea from Northern or Harbor Freight.   It takes less than 30 pounds of force to lift a 150 pound deer with those.  Skinning an average of 5-6 a year, for a long time, has been a piece of cake with those.

The electric winch would probably be better for ripping the hide off, but I don't think I will attempt that again.   I tried it on one last year, using a tractor and a pulley, and it did not work out so well.  I will probably stick with the old-fashioned method, using the block and tackle and a sharp knife, from now on.

We do between 10 and 20 deer a year. Many in multiples. Worth every bit of hassle that you think there may be to hit a button and cut at the perfect standing height. I don't get what messing around you think there is with a 12 volt battery. Plug in a trickle charger and walk away. I know. Tough work

I will definitely be doing this soon. Probably two. Seems like we have 1 50% of the time or 2 or more the other.

I don't live in Webster so no worries about ceilings in a garage. Foo foo homes out that way.
