Where are those plots?

Grow, Are these dunstan chesnuts? Found this tree totally loaded the other day overseeding a food plot. Never have seen a nut in this tree ever before! On my murder plot edge. Also have a mature one of these in my backyard at camp..

See the leaves to me look like a beech but I didn't know they put on a nut like that. Have tons of beech around too

I agree lol guess I was wrong. Never seen one before. Though I do think the one in my backyard is a chestnut. Most certain. And it doesn't have the same leaf nor bark as a beech

i thought chestnut trees where wiped out ... i was under the thinking unless u planted it there are no native chestnuts left, they do look like beech nuts on that tree. and maybe some one can answer this arn't chestnuts large like bigger then acorns. im no expert by far so more then likely im  totally wrong

Beech.  Looks like a good crop.  Critters love 'em.

Chestnuts are as big/bigger than your eye.  They aren't all gone, just the majority.  Most of what you see are imported, or descendants of disease resistant American trees.

Thought I was banned from site..earlier on our PC I could only type one word then got tossed.

On Kindle now. Beech can produce on 2 ft saplings...but if your unsure still could be chipikins(sp?)

Also very irregular crop, not as often as oak or hickory. Sounds like a very bleak overview for the tree in general.

Alot of American chestnuts are wiped out. Pretty rare in this area. Chinese chestnuts are all over. Even some hybrids out there.

I have Beech all around and never ever noticed Beech nuts before. A couple of blocks of woods are nearly pure Beech trees, and never noticed hardly any nuts lol. They just logged the heck out of the woods this tree is in back in April, So maybe the extra sunlight and a good growing year really helped the tree? 

I used to be really good with my trees in my younger days, Im starting to not recall as much as i used too these days lol

I will take a picture of the one in my backyard at camp next time, it has a more coarse bark, unlike the smooth bark of a Beech. It has the same type of nut as far as I can remember though. Same hard thorny and Brown in fall..

OK they are called Chinguapin trees (Allegheny) similar leaf but they still lokk more like a regular chestnut hull but smaller with a small chestnut type seed in them

So got daughter involved with my/ our first ever plot. Far from done but decent jump on it. Didn't check the ph , no lime spread , no way of getting machinery even if I had any in. Old logging trail about 75 yards below my tree stand. Even if nothing grows , or deer don't like it, or deer wipe it out daughter and I still had quality time in the woods on a nice day. Mostly clover with a little Timothy grass. Unsure of what the Timothy grass is or do but what the heck.

Was surprised to find this guy as ground was pretty dry when I flipped over a rock. Boy could he scamper. Not sure what type of salamander he is. Which reminds me , haven't seen a red eft in forever.
Nearby cam pic. Also a few scrub bucks , doe and coon.
Squeaky cheese goodness on way home. From Marilla country store. If you like tangy cheddar Mean n nasty is for you. I'll venture back out soon to work on plot some more. Pretty rocky so Mantis is out. Blisters to prove we raked. lol Crossing fingers plot grows

I'm with ya on my first attempt. I put clover in and about the same size plot. I'm in the same boat as no way I could get equipment back where I put mine. I used a steal rake and went to town. Mine is about 60 yards long and about 15-20 foot wide. I put in clover. I timed it pretty good as I put it in Sunday and we got rain 24 hours or so later. Hopefully it takes off. Here is a pic. I didn't get a before though.

Clover/chicory plots are doing pretty well where I mowed them. I'm kinda surprised it came in this well for a frost seeding and pretty hard competition from grasses early on.




Ended up riding over to my neighbors house while moving a couple cams this morning. Long story short he ended up coming over with a big heavy transport disc to till my field up that I planned on working on this weekend. He ran over the whole thing a few times in one direction and cut it deep. Since it wasn't sprayed the grass needs a couple days to start dying off now. He said he will be back this weekend to disc it the other direction and depending on how it looks maybe come back again in a few more days to really have it looking perfect. He tells me he likes to do it this way to avoid using chemicals and this way has worked for him for 50 years. I can't wait for it to be done so I can get some seed in the ground asap!

Got an early start and worked on it again for a few hours. Not as big as I'd like but hope it works. I question how much sun it really gets. We'll see Supposed to rain maybe tonight and Friday or Saturday. Set a cam up on both ends.
