How to Fish from your own boat?

Any boat will do to start.  I have a canoe, Hobie kayak and a john boat, all do not require registration unless you put a motor on it.  In so far as power boats look for something in the 14-19 ft range with a good working motor, aluminum preferred as they can take damage and be fixed easily.  When purchasing make sure you test the motor and look at the spray out the back that should be good and steady stream or it will need a water pump impeller also check the bearings by jacking up the frame and spinning the wheel.  Should have very little play in the bearings and make no noise when spinning.  Bearing buddies are awesome, get them and grease the axel at least 3 times a year, more if you take it out often.  And be sure to check the bearings at least once a year.

Good luck!  In NY you now need a safety license to drive a boat or water ski so if you get a power boat you have to get certified.  Easy one day course.

Where to fish is another story, any lake that has a ramp is usually fishable, just check regulations for the fish you are targeting.  Kayaks and canoes can be launched from any location and no permits are needed for them.  Depending on your location would depend on what area I would recommend.  Where are you located?

And welcome aboard!

Thanks for replies. Im located in brooklyn, kayaks, canoe sounds good i guess for single person, but i wanted to take family on it so aluminum boat would be good too. So with kayaks/canoe pretty much $25 fishing license and good to go?

Even if I've had a boat for decades, I need to take a course now? Didn't know anything about this!

I see people using trolling motors on kayaks. Is that allowed in ny, any registration for that?

Yes, any craft with any type of motor, must be registered.

Also do you have to go through DMV to get the trolling motor regisered on kayak in ny?

You won't need to register the trolling motor at DMV, just the kayak.

Have fun on the water! Always wear your PFD.

dont need to take course unless operating a PWC - like a Jet ski i believe .  Or if your under 18.  https://www.boat-ed.com/abc/abc_specific_images/pdfs/ny_law.pdf  I keep these in my boat box for reference.  Had a coast guard officer give me a ticket once and I showed him the regs and he still gave me one.  Even thought the DEC guy with him said he thought I was right.  Called office when I got home and they threw it out. Was for not having a VDS .  But i was in a 14 ft boat so it wasnt necessary.  Every time I went to the black river bay it seemed I got stopped for inspection.

This was taken from NY boating web page.

Q. Do I have to get the New York Boating Safety Certificate?

A. If you were born on or after May 1, 1996, you are required to successfully complete a state approved course and obtain a boating safety certificate to operate a motorboat. Additionally, all persons, regardless of age, must complete a Boating Safety Education Course in order to operate a PWC on NYS waters. The required boating safety certificate must be carried at all times while operating the boat.

That is the link with the FAQ's.

The boat safety class is allways a good idea...MANY folks out there in boats have no clue on expected safety, right of way, basic navigating, etc. This is a real good idea for any one else who may be driving the boat too...spouse, etc. Actually, Ijust remembered my wife took it on line a few years ago. You can google NYS parks and recreation for an interactive map showing fishing access sites, boat launches, etc.

You may want to rent a small runabout to get the feel for one. In this neck of the woods (Central NY near Oneida Lake), most marinas offer them. You can find boats up to and including large pontoon boats, day cruisers for rent. It is very wise to start with a small very maneuverable boat to learn on.
