Credit Cards

Does PayPal allow people to pay their balance by debit card?   There is more risk involved paying with a debit card over a credit card.  I can't imagine it allows you to pay by check?

My paypal is through my debit card, but PayPal is much more secure than using a debit card online.

Never seen a car

rental service take a debit card   if it happened the guy who rented to you if discovered would have gotten fired .

you're misinformed. They just need any "card" to be able to bill  you and track you down. They generally put a hold on the card, so if your cc is maxed or your debit balance is low it'll fail either way, it's only being able to come after you for collections, which they can do just as easy with a debit and in fact your bank most likely will pay the overdraft.

Dont  know have not tried to rent a car with just a debit card in 20 years  I remember back then them  saying they only take credit cards so since then that's what I give them . Probably they have better ways to track the car and you that's why they dont care anymore  maybe .

Do what you're comfortable with....

I have 2 or 3 going at any time.....I've used the returns/ rewards programs to buy guns, scopes, airline tickets at ridiculous rates, free hotel rooms. But like anything have to understand what you're trying to accomplish. Bought RT to Zimbabwe from JFK for $112 for a hunt. Stayed 3 nights in most expensive hotel in Barcelona for free.

You are paying a 3% mark up across the board when paying strait cash and not getting anything back. Thats the service charge built into everything retailers use.

Credit over debit even if both say "Visa" is not the same. Once you buy debit, money is gone. But with credit if there is a dispute, you haven't paid a thing and can get charges in error or dispute fixed.

Yes you can rent cars with debit, buy plane tickets, and even travel international. I've done a combination of all of them at one point or another depending what was best at the time.

Buckmaster , I’m a lot like you in this regard , don’t know my credit score, don’t care. I’ve had three loans in my life ( almost 60 y/o ) motorcycle when  I was a kid ,mortgage, and one car loan .

I guess I have a good credit score as my one and only car loan on the Subaru they gave me 0 % interest ,was going to,pay cash, but put the money in a fixed account paying close to 3% instead ,since the gave me zero % loan .

We do use our one CC for all purchases and I just got $600 in gift cards from that . Pay it off every month ,automatic withdraw from my bank account .

One aspect is your credit score, which is directly influenced my CC activity & payments, can either go up or down. Only matters for future money borrowing leverage. Since retiring, I only use my CC for emergency purchases, ie; vehicle repairs, appliances that have failed, etc. Do quickly pay off CC and haven't had to use it in over a year. Well... was recently informed my credit score was lowered due to lack of credit activity. HUH!??! Really don't care, but it's bizarre! They're actually attempting to penalize me for working within my budget and coercing me to use a CC...

Don't urban landlords actually ask for a credit score before approving an apartment rental??? Any one have a new employer ask for your credit score?

You want good credit use the credit card and always pay it off on time at end of month.  Also I suspect they go by assets if you own a lot of property stocks bonds  and pay all your utilitie Bill's on time.  But who knows I think exactly what and  how they do it is a industry secret .

But yea funny as it sounds  you get better credit by using it more as long as you always pay on time .

Yes, it's a win-win right there. The secret to the whole thing is self-control...as long as you don't go over your budget or overspend, the cash-back is a great option, it really adds up. AND ALWAYS PAY OFF THE BALANCE EACH MONTH!!! Most times I wait until I have about $500 in points built-up and then cash in.

Don't believe assets has anything to do with your credit score, never seen them listed on my score card..!?! All about credit purchases, bill payments & payment history.

Like I said dont know exactly what they do but if someone has a million dollar home no mortgage . It's a safe bet for the bank to assume that they are getting there money back one way or the other . But beside just paying on time they dont say what they look at .

Many places in NYC stopped accepting cash. “Cashless” is the new trend so without a card you are screwed.

My wife and I have 1 card (JetBlue) that we use for everything (gas groceries etc.) then pay off in full each month. We earn tons of points and use them for free trips. I actually can’t go on enough trips to keep the points near zero. I’m around 150K points right now.

I just cashed in all of my points, had close to 130k. I took both of my kids to Nashville for a weekend trip and hockey game. Round trip tickets free for 3 people, hotel room in downtown Nashville 2 nights free, only thing I paid out of pocket for was the rental car. It saved me over $2000.

i'll add one cool thing about my citi card that i believes applies to any citi card. You can track your purchases that you make with the card. It searches for better prices over the next 60 days. You have to go in and load in your purchase with an attached receipt, so I only do it for large purchases. However if they find a lower price from any vendor over the next 60 days they give you the difference back. I'm not sure how they make money off this, other than it's a benefit for cardholders. I have $270 in 2 years.

Lol that will never happen. But cashless makes sense. It’s way faster and eliminates stealing by employees or potential robberies. I think it’s great.

Cashless also allows the government to track every purchase you make. Many socialist leaning countries in Europe have done away with cash. Imagine buying a 4wheeler or boat off someone and having to write a check or meat at a bank to make the transaction.

I know what you mean, but the paranoia level here is a little high. They really don't care about you unless you're also visiting a bunch of radical websites. And chances are you're then smart enough to hide your trail...
