With all the M-1's that were fired at the rifle range at P.I. or LeJeune never saw or heard of this happening .......

Looks like a squib load pushed a bullet into the barrel and didn't eject the empty case.  The shooter then manually ejected the spent case and loaded a live round in the chamber, not realizing there was a bullet lodged in the barrel.  A bore obstruction will cause that type of catastropic failure in an M1.

Yikes.  Looking at it frame by frame it seems like she had all her fingers.  It would be nice to know for sure.

I read she only got a few wood splinters otherwise ok

Definitely a obstructed barrel. 

Glad she wasn't hurt badly.
