Doc
Shotgun slug in the head ....... yick! I don't even want to imagine that sort of thing. They were dragging a deer for crying out loud. I can't imagine why the gun was loaded or at least why the safety wasn't on.
New York Hillbilly
Not that it could have been any less worse if he were older, but my goodness an 18 year old kid. How sad! My heart and condolences go out to the family.

nyantler
I hope there are some youngsters on here paying attention to this... maybe you can learn something... if you're thinking none of this can happen to you and you don't need to do the right things.. like unloading your gun, keeping the muzzle pointed away from others, looking beyond your shot, etc... this is an unfortunate way to have to see that all the stuff you learn is very very important... it only takes a little time to do the right thing. Elmo
If they've already successfully taken a deer and was dragging it out, was it necessary to keep a bullet in the chamber?
the blur
Note to self: Unload rifle after bambi dies. This would certainly be a change for 99% of us. or at least take 1 out of the chamber, and leave 1 in the mag for coyotes.
Jafo
This has been happening since guns were invented and it is sad.. I remember my father telling me a story from when he was a kid in the 50's, his best friend was carrying a loaded rifle while walking through the barn. He had it pointing towards the ground and it went off, ricocheted back up and hit him in the neck, dead. It is so very sad. Just remember these stories when you teach your children how to handle guns.

vizslas
the 18 year old kid i talked to a guy in his hunting party and he said that they didnt know if the gun was going to work that day.well it worked twice.poorly maintained firearms ,and lack of experiance seems to be the cause of this kids demise. Marti375
WOW! Who gives a kid a gun they don't think will work. Blow up your kid with a hunk of junk you won't use?
Chrishunter
Gonna make a statement that some of you may disagree with, but I have always hunted with my father and brothers my whole life. When one of us gets a deer, there are usually two of us dragging the deer out. I actually do not unload my rifle, due to the fact that I have shot 2 deer in my hunting experiences while dragging out one already. But, always maintaining safe gun handling while making the drag. I know that Im not the only hunter that does this. Anyone else ever take a deer while dragging one out?
