What would you have done?

I would have laughed at him as I hung up on him.

I gave up hunting with the inlaws before things got bad between us, the FIL did ask for my wifes tags one year and I laughed histerically at him and told him how those were her tags not any one elses and so on. This was the same year he shot a buck and never tracked it because he thought he missed and found it much later on. Mean while he killed two more bucks and just kept on hunting like he still had a tag, no doe tags in the NZ so I really don't know what the hell he was doing. Some guys will take advantage of people and especially their own families, all to get a deer.

Have to agree with the other responders . Would never have driven 5 hours to cover his mistake. Would have told him if you want it come and get it and you owe me $10 to cover cost of the permit. Next time if you get a DMP don't tell anyone. Once things cool down I would tell the FNL just how I felt about being used in his illegal activity. Personally I would have told him tough shit, handle it your self you shot it not me.

I only said greek because I remember your old screen name. As I read the post i'm thinking "gee this sounds familiar". (Italian Inlaws)That being said, I got nothin' but love for ya brother!

On second thought, just remember that could be his last deer, then what? You're being quite rational about it. You'd never hear the end of it should the tables be turned. One thing that works for me is stating the obvious "So you don't want me hunting this weekend, but now you want me to sign over my doe tag to you and bail you out, blah blah..."

Then wait for reaction.

I hear what some of you are saying and telling him what he should have done, but he is caught in the middle. He is not happy with what his F I L did and needs to keep his wife happy to keep the piece in his house. He is in a tough spot.I wish him luck.

I dont think many are telling him he should have handled it differently, I think most of us are just saying what we would have done in that situation. :)

Thanks for your support Elmer. I'm the Greek and I married into the Italian side. LOL! (Happily married for 20 years I might add despite dealing with both sides of in-laws!) :P

For what it's worth, I do have a good relationship with them. But over the past 30 years there have been many times when both my wife and I get extremely confused by their actions and we can't make heads or tails out of what they say or do. The funny part is that their response is always the same, "what do you expect, we are immigrants, we can't fend for ourselves".

Anyway, enough of this thread. . . once I get the 8 pointer that is still up there in the fields, I'll be a happy camper once again! And today I found out that my brother who also got a DMP for our unit can't go up again until the last weekend of bow 12/16 (we both still have our bow tags) so he said he'd transfer his DMP to me for this coming weekend. ;)

And no, I'm not telling anyone . . . . :P

Interesting combo, that's for sure! LOL It made me think of a joke. What does an offspring of Greek and Italian parents do when they shoot a nice buck?? answer: They go calling everyone they know up asking for a buck tag (since they already used the first one up) (these are the Italian genes at work) and then they strap the buck to the roof of their vehicle and drive it around Astoria, Queens for 3 days to show it off!(these are the Greek genes at work) LOL

Steve you hit the nail on the HEAD. Us Greeks do really love to showboat. I chose to break the stereotype and Americanize myself (eventhought I'm an OTB). Deerthug, I'm sure has learned to swallow many bitter pills, this is just another. There is a Greek saying " perastika sou" which means "may it pass over". And this too shall pass.

LMFAO!!! Actually the Greeks would put the whole deer on what we call a "Souvla" - Karp knows what I'm talking about.

Well said Karp. I'm Americanized as well . . . err . . . I was born here duh!

As a final note, today he tried pushing the meat on us and the wife told him no thanks. We have no room in the freezer. I don't want it anyway - its tainted. ^_^ He also tried to rationalize what he did as not being wrong by saying that I could use my brother's DMP because he assumes that my brother is not going up again. I also found out that my mother in law made a comment yesterday in Italian which I did not hear (and yes I speak and understand Greek and Italian) something to the effect of "You can't bother anyone anymore". Are you freaking kidding me? It wasn't like I drove 15 minutes to their house to drop something off for God's sake. I bailed his freaking a$$ and that's the last time I'm doing it.

Doh! Just read this, sorry about the mess there. That does suck, and yes, next year, you have no DMPS no matter what you get :)

Where you going to hunt next week? With them there or ?

Don't know yet. If FNL comes up I'm switching his ammo to blanks. :sarcastichand: I'm also trying to convince my brother to go up with me early this Saturday morning so we can get a good part of Saturday in and part of Sunday. We had planned to go back up for last weekend of bow but he can't - work obligations.

I woulda said."too bad.Butcher it up before johnny comes.Im keeping my tag. You shouldn't shoot it if the tag aint in your pocket".

I am a dick.I don't care.People know i would bend over backwords for my fanmily and freinds. But when they do something they knew not to do and they coulda easily prevented their selves from doing it then they can deal with their own concenquences. It was an illegal kill with out the tag on hand to begin with.
