Buckmaster7600
You guys are crazy! I had to mow the other day, light misting of roundup out front should hold me over through turkey season! Of of these years I’m going to just plant my entire front lawn with sweet corn and not have to worry about it!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1

The_Real_TCIII
So I ran out of ethanol free gas last night and my neighbor lent me some regular 87. My mower seemed to run better, it had a nice buzz sound to it. It's a 20 year old John Deere. Should I ditch the ethanol free?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro I will be the contrarian to Rob and say " Yes " . Ditch the ethanol free gas . At least for the summer while using it mowing every week . My mower and 4 wheeler did the same thing. Ran way better after I went back to regular gas .At the end of the summer I try to use up most of the tank and then add a maybe a gal of ethanol free gas , let it run thru the system , shut the gas line off and let it run till it burns up the gas in the line and carb. Never had a problem doing this and a better running machine.

I bought it used last year and changed to ethanol free. BizCT
What is "ethanol free" gas? serious question. i've heard of it, but where do you buy it? I just fill up my 5 gallon tank with 87 and run snowthrower and lawnmower on it every year without issue. For each machine I run it empty end of season and drain oil. The short quick version your standard 87 you use is ethanol which has about 10% plant in it (think corn) Ethanol free is 100% oil. Ethanol in your vehicle is not a big deal but ethanol in your small mower/snowblower engine can cause issues with the carburetors and fuel lines and it will gum these up over time especially when they sit for months at a time without being used.

Gotcha, so I guess that's why no issues? I mow weekly and drain before off-season.

dbHunterNY
My grandfather had a small engine repair shop that was a dealer for toro and other brands. Another guy I know owns and operates (does all repair work) for a small engine shop that does hand held stuff like saws. Both say to stick to 91 octane non ethanol gas (I get it from Stewart's shops) and in the hand held stuff run it rich (1:40 vs 1:50 for premix) stuff will run forever. I haven't had anything rebuilt or taken apart and cleaned yet and they run. zero turn runs like the day I got it about a decade ago.Sent from my SM-G781V using Tapatalk

bugsNbows
Just as an FYI, it is not just ethanol in the gas that can be problematic.

Bionic
@Biz-R-OWorld @The_Real_TCIII My opinion is YES, stick with ethanol free on your small engines. Overtime it will deteriorate plastic, and rubber components in the engines fuel system, which will create buildup, etc...this buildup can clog filters, accumulate in the carb bowl, and in the jets, and so on. If you decide to stick with regular gas(w/ethanol) try to keep the gas tank full when not in use(especially winter storage) I like to run them out of gas as ethanol slowly absorbs moisture, which can overtime start rusting/corrosion of carburetors...etc. Same goes for your gas can you fill your equipment with...took a class on this stuff as I am a Parks Dept Foreman of 17 years. Not an expert, but this is correct info. Edited May 3, 2021 by Bionic
