Have an 870 20 gauge my fiance will b using for turkey in May, last year in fall i took a hen with it with a full choke in it but i would like something a bit tighter for farther shots just incase i decide to use it instead of my bow throughout May.

What chokes do you guys use and why. im looking at the undertaker extra full as ive read it can stretch a good shot out to 60 yards, im not going that deep for um i know that but what have you had good luck with?

20 gauge out to 60 yards? Wow.

My friend hunts with a 20 gauge and has OK luck with the undertaker; however, after hitting about 30 yards...the pattern goes to hell. And, it is regardless of ammo options or combinations.

I think he could eek out a 35 yd shot if everything panned out right...but that be the limit on a great day.

You can get the undertaker choke on sale for $15 at a few places I think...wing supply and cabelas had it on sale. I picked up a few for 12 gauges.

I tried an undertaker in my 870 12. ga. I cuold not get what I thought was a good pattern at 40 yds. I went back to the full choke that came with the gun & got a better result with it at 40 yds. Jmo, but the fun of turkey hunting is hearing the birds & seeing how close they will come in, I am not into the 60yd shots.

well you guys are looking to close at the 60 yards thing. im not shooting anything at 60 yards and never would without a slug or a rifle.

thats what they say about the undertaker when using hevi shot loads that they can be good out to 60. 40 is my max id ever try to take a turkey and thatd be only if they were giving me hell and the season was coming to a close or something. i'll be bow hunting them in May so i'll need them within 20 or so.

The jellyhead looked nice but is a bit expensive at 50 a pop. if something else works just as good for less than half the money id never go that far to buying the $50 one.

i've tried sighting in my 20 gauge with the full choke and 3 inch remington turky loads and even at 20 yards im not getting the groups id like to see. maybe i should just try some hevi shots threw the full choke or just grab a remington extra full for it and see what happens

I wouldn't even think about spending $20-30 a box for hevishot/blend unless I had a better choke...Jellyhead would be a minimum...carlsons or something along those lines. $50 for a choke capable of hevishot is nothing when it is $5 a shell....

getting a pattern that tight with a 20 is possible with heavy shot and a good choke(make sure it is for heavy shot.. to tight and it will distort your patterns or blow up your barrel. but you would be shooting a slug at 25 yards.. 35-45 yrds is a much more reasonable distance to try to attain..

next year i'll probly have a 12gauge for myself and this 20 gauge will end up my fiances turkey gun only so i dont put too much into it thats all. undertaker can shoot hevi shot also so maybe ill try one of those or maybe just try an extra full or super full remington standard choke. standard chokes cant shoot hevi shot tho i believe

at 20-25 yards with a full choke and 3 inch remington turkey loads my pattern spreads out fast, fast enough that its hard to tell if your shooting high or low or left or right. i dont go out and shoot loads for fun so im not worried about shootin expensive hevi shots, site in and im good unless im shootin at a turkey i dont waste um so the money isn't a big deal really.

I shoot an extra full turkey choke jugged barrel 12 gauge and can kill a bird at 65yards , problem is my pattern is 3 1/2 in at 20 yards. when trying to attain extremely long range patterns . a good scope/sight is needed as you pattern will be so tight at close range its like shooting a slug. just an other expense to consider.... As for just sighting in to do it right and actually find what works, you need to shoot all different manufacturs shells, along with legnth 2 3/4 , 3 or 3 1/2. yes it makes a big difference along with size of shot. I have one gun that is a 3 in mag, so i should shoot 3 in mags in it?, pattern was ok not what i expected though, tried 2 3/4 with same size shot #6 and pattern size shrank by almost 30%. Sighting in a true turkey gun is not cheap.... but when you find the right combinition your patterns will be impressive. My opinion is get a different shell from as many buddies as possible to try and see what works best with your gun/choke.

Your suggestion to borrow a few shells to try is a great one: We have done that many times with our local group of hunters: saves money and adds to the comraderie.

Now...Can you explain that "extra full turkey choke jugged barrel"...Never heard of such a thing.

Thanks

I tried a few and didnt see much difference from the factory choke. I finally tried one made by Tru-Glow and it made way tighter patterns. I think it was only about $25.

Set an empty beer can on a stick at what ever you feel your max. range is and take a shot. If you get 5 or 6 good hits you're ready to go

Wow, a 10 ga with extra full choke. That would be like firing a cannon.

I've unleashed four quick ones after my dad missed a nice turkey, it barks but being its so heavy its not to much worse than a 3.5 12 gauge. It'll make your ears ring though... I used to hunt geese with it but with cost of ammo I decided to downgrade to the 12.

A juged barrel is back bored to increase size of bore and then is tapered back down to true size. it allows bird shot to spread out in barrel and then gently reform into a non deforming pattern. it is unsfe to shoot slugs thru a juged barrel as they would tip and blow barrel. they are designed for tight patterns with bird shot and can be found on a lot of custom guns. the barrel is also usually ported. to ease recoil and again tighten patterns. the choke tube is then put in and is usually longer resulting in a longer forceing cone again improving patterns.

Last year i picked up an 870 Supermag in12GA i put on a xtra full Primos Tight Wad choke ($25 @ dicks) and 2 boxes of shells Winchester Supreme 3"

and Remington Premium 3"

the remington's outperformed the winchester supremes i had about 50-60 pellets in the head/neck at 35-40 yrds

i just put a primos extra full choke on my 870 20g and sighted her in this weekend with the new red dot scope i got. all i had was winchesters which do not seem to be giving me great patterns, gonna try some remingtons and a few others this weekend i think.

your gun will like/shoot a specific load best, the more you can test the better but it can get expensive best bet is to split a bunch of boxes with friends, i only shot 2 kinds the winchester supreme and the remington premier magnums,,, noticable improvement in the remingtons

Sited in guns the other night. A Remington 870; 12 and 20 gauge. The 12 has a HS Strut Undertaker ported choke, shells are the Rem. Nitro Turkey 3 inch number 4's shot. Right on the money at 20, 30 and 40 yards, perfect. The 20 has a HS Strut super full choke using Nitro, 3 inch, number 5 shot. Shot at 20 yard, perfect, 25 yards good, and at 30, maybe 5 pellets on the paper. I increased the size of target, and still not gettng any more pellets on the target. Can that shot spread that quickly in 5 yards? Maybe the choke, maybe the shells, maybe the gun? i like to range out to at least 35 yards. Any suggestions? The video is at 25 yds,
