Sogaard
My boys are still 11 until July. I'm planning to take them out with me so they can get a feel for it, but no shooting for them till fall or next spring.
NFA-ADK
I think my 1st godchild is old enough this year and plan on seeing if his father is going to take him out. I will find out this weekend. His younger brother has the itch yet he has not caught the hunting bug yet. He likes to shoot so I am hoping a weekend of small game will peak his interest instead of video games... Early
My youngest grandson is 15, so this will be our last year of sharing the youth hunt for turkeys. Fortunately, I do have a new grandson on the way...and a great grandson, too. In another dozen years, I'll be back in business!
Cabin Fever
My daughter is now 12, so I'll be taking her out. We seldom have turkeys in the area though. In past springs, every now and then, we'll have a gobbler around. Other years, we won't have any within hearing range! Tough getting the kids out of bed that early, driving 30 minutes to camp, trudging them back through the woods, then not having any turkeys around! Sure bursts their bubble... Cabin Fever
Getting close! Anyone hearing or seeing much? I went out listening last weekend and it sounds like this will be one of those years when there will be a couple in the area to hunt. I plan on going out listening again this weekend, to see if they are still roosting in the same area and do the same thing they did last weekend after flydown. My daughter is getting very excited!! Fantail
Hope this isn't off-topic but my club pathfinderfishandgame.com is hosting a 4th annual Youth Hunt jamboree on the 14th. you can d/l the flyer. youth hunters can learn about turkeys, instruction, even pattern their gun. Club is in Fulton NY but if you have a young hunter near the CNY area it's a good event 9am - 3pm. Ages 11-17 welcome.

landtracdeerhunter
Spotted a flock Easter morn., but seems to be a unique year. Seen alot of scratching areas in the woods. Their not coming in the open much, as other years. Maybe enough food in the thicker areas, I don't know. Should make for a different and unique hunt. Good luck to all the youth going out next weekend. Hope you have some nice weather.
Cabin Fever
Right now, it looks like their calling for rain this weekend, for the youth opener! It rained hard last year on opening weekend also! Great......
Cabin Fever
Anyone have any luck or action?? Sure was happy when I got up and saw it wasn't raining! My daughter likes to sleep in until ~noon on the weekends, so I wasn't too sure how it would go trying to get her up at 3:45am! I woke her up at exactly 3:43am and she was up, hit the bathroom, dressed, contacts in, and ready to go at 3:47am!! 4 MINUTES!! LOL Yeah, she was a little excited!! Was hoping the rain would hold off for a few hours. My daughter and I got to the blind and settled in at 5am. Never heard a peep all morning! Around 6:30, my daughter was sound asleep. I looked behind us and saw a coyote sneaking by ~50 yards away, trying to get downwind of the calling and decoys. He stood there for a minute and locked in on the decoys. I woke my daughter up, so she could see it. Told her to watch, as it may put the stalk on. It got our scent and trotted back out the way it came in. That little bit of excitement woke her up and she never went back to sleep again! I called every now and then, hoping a lonely gobbler would wander in. It started to rain ~8:15. My daughter was getting pretty bored, frustrated, and tired, so we left. Don't want to burn her out. Just as we were walking up to the cabin, I glanced up towards the yard, and there were 2 turkeys busting out of the YARD!! They must have spotted us at the same time we saw them! One flew one way and the other went the other way! I didn't get a good enough look at them to know what they were, but I'm "assuming" they were the 2 hens that I see and get trailcam pics of frequently together around the cabin. We couldn't believe we were out in the woods hunting all morning, only to get back to the cabin and see 2 turkeys ~8 yards from the cabin!!!! Well, she'll have a story to tell anyway! LOL Have another game plan for tomorrow morning to hunt in another area.
BigTomsCalls
Took my buddy and his nephew out this morning. At 7:10 called in a jake using one of my sratch box calls to 15 yards and the kid missed!! The boy was really upset with his self but we were able to put him on another bird 2 1/2 hours later. Called in a nice long bird at 9.30 using the same call and the kid gave him a dirt nap at 35 yards. 10 1/4 inch beard 3/4 inch spurs 15 lbs. There was very little gobbling going on, but we were able to locate a few bird for the opener!!
growalot
Congrats...that first miss was just so he could get the bigger bird nice at first daylight...one very distant shot and then the temps dropped pea soup rolled in....this was followed by a very steady and current rain Birds have been dead silent all morning...almost like they know

G-Man
Couldn't hunt sat as i had to work sat and got out very late and didn't get to roost any birds for sunday, but got my friend to video the hunt on sunday with my friend and his boy after about a 3 mile run and gun we were able to get on some birds, they came hot and fast and i was glad it was a professional videographer behind the lens, i would still be setting up the camera by the time the hunt was over! At 758am great first ever kill on cam, with cutaways and an estatic hunter and father! The best was breakfast down in town and hearing the boy tell his story to everyone he knew that walked in the door! I was also funny to hear the father be jelous when he muttered under his breath I never got videoed for a hunting show..... pics to follow

Cabin Fever
First year for my daughter. She got a shot at a jake on Sunday and missed.... twice! She was (and still is) crushed! Don't think anything I told her made her feel any better... Gonna take her out shooting this weekend to build her confidence back up.
