burmjohn
With the potential frost and cold weather coming tonight, and below freezing temps across the state predicted. I wonder how this will effect the bugs, and everything that started to bud and grow already? My father said that there are mosquito flying around already, hopefully the frost might nuke a few? It will hit 18 up by him tonight in Cochecton. Down on the Island it looks like about 28 or so tonight... I just planted grass and have the first few popping through. I see tons of buds on the tree's and perennials popping up all over...
G-Man
a lot of buds will freeze ..which may mean less apples/nuts this year depending how far along they are. i hope a lot of bugs get frozen stiff n die.....
landtracdeerhunter
Weather man says clear and light winds. Not good. Their will be loss, no doubt, and higher prices to boot.
SplitG2
This is why I don't plant early no matter how nice it is out. Planting early has a higher percentage that you will have crop failure. With that said I did turn over last year corn and soybean fields but will not plant again till may. I did plant 13 apple trees this past weekend that are out of the bud stage and into the leaf stage and hope they survive?
Doc
There are a lot of fruit growers that are super nervous tonight. They run the risk of losing everything, or at least having their crop harvest severely slashed. In fact some of the farmers that I have seen interviewed on the TV are already resigned to the fact that they are going to have a losing year. That includes fruit trees and grapes and I don't know what all. The health of the trees and plants/vines should be uneffected, but the fruit production will be screwed with this situation. My question is: is the acorn crop effected by frosts at this stage? Anybody know?
SplitG2
Doc, I'm in 4f and I haven't seen any of the oaks bud out yet, so I would say they will be fine.
nyantler
I'd be nervous about apple trees.. but even without the frost it has been kind of cold for the bees and many of the trees might not get pollinated anyway with such an early bloom... fasteddie
At 9:45 , it's 33 degrees out according to my digital thermometer .
burmjohn
Safe to say it will be below freezing by you
ANTLERS
Rain fall has more of an effect on oak tree's than temp. Less rain in the spring=less acorns in the fall.Wet spring=more acorns.
