In years past I would agree.  But these are mostly teenage girls 14-20 or so.  Not the 30-45 range they used to be.  And they come and actually pay attention, know what a gun is have experience with one and do well.  So I would have to say the tide it turning a lot.

A lot of my female peers my age and younger are getting into hunting. People used to hunt primarily for subsistence (putting a meal on the table). As modern agriculture, farming, electric refrigeration, and food transport became available in the last century or so, getting safe and 'easy' meats has become less of a hunting and farming issue and more of a 'go to the store' issue. Of course people do still hunt for the table but a lot of people have come into the sport for other reasons now that it's not so necessary in order to feed a family, and reasons to hunt today vary widely. That's awesome too. But I think we are starting to see a swing back into hunting for the table with the newer generations.

 

People my age and younger are getting fed up with the commercial food supply and want to take direct responsibility for our carnivorous habits. People are wanting to get back to their roots and source food more carefully. It's why a lot of younger people are getting back into farming, gardening, raising poultry, etc. Just in the last five years I have seen a handful of my lady friends (most younger than I am) become very interested and passionate about hunting, and a few of them have taken it up in earnest. More than a dozen friends now farm either a little (or a lot!) and raise chickens, and one has plans to raise yaks and other large herbivores. Interest in being responsible for our own food is slowly growing with some younger people. Will it be enough? I don't know, only time will tell. For every younger person that is becoming more interested in the basics (farming, hunting, etc), there are probably two that are glued to computers or video games and don't get outside much. But hope isn't gone just yet....

 

Something all of us experienced hunters can do is, if we have time and are able, to try to take someone under our wing if they express interest. A child, a friend, a cousin, a neighbor's friend's cousin; hunting can be very overwhelming and intimidating to get into if you are not raised with it. Mentoring someone can have a much higher 'conversion rate'. It doesn't need to take a lot of time... just helping someone get on the right track, and maybe helping them once to learn butchering. I am not trying to play the 'gender card' but a lot of girls feel especially intimidated about getting into this. Not because they are girls, necessarily, but because there is still a large stigma against female hunting (mostly by non-hunters). We all know the pressure that anti-hunters are putting on us. It's only getting worse as time goes on. Ladies often get the double pressure of antis, but also mockery because we have a different gender. "But you're a girl" or "Nice shot, for a girl" are often said in jest, but they can do real harm to beginners. I was ridiculed often in school and was treated outright cruelly by (ironically) other girls especially-- most notably vegetarians (but I won't get into that here). My point is, if you have the ability and the will to do so, giving someone new a little guidance can change their life! :)

I have two young ladies gun hunting with me this year. Both of them shot deer in the youth hunts the last couple years sitting by my side. I would put their shooting ability up against almost any hunter, and at a couple turkey shoots last year, did just that. Lets just say, they went home with a couple turkeys, and I went home with a couple $10 bills I didn't have when I got there.

 

I agree with Jennifer in that a lot of men have a big problem with females doing outdoors stuff in general. God forbid they beat them at a turkey shoot, or go out and shoot nice deer. I don't understand the lack of support girls get from the hunting community in general. It is slowly coming around, and I for one, am glad.

Plus if you look at underdogs profile and check her facebook page listed, she sells female hunter cosmetics. I think that may be more of a motive for her to ask about female hunters.

 

what the heck are female hunter cosmetics? I have a reply to this if it is what I think it is, so I'm going to wait before I make myself silly to be sure.

My 12 year old daughter will take her course this year. Has a Cricket .22, Ruger 10/.22 40th Anniversary and a Remington youth pink laminate 20 gauge in the safe. Her 20 gauge is all set up for turkey: Jellyhead tube, optics and a choke tube for slugs. Love the fact she's in ballet 6 nights a week and Clara in The Nutcracker this year but will put crawlers on the hook and take bass off the hook and appreciates bass thumb. Never once regret not having a boy. Healthy was all I asked for. Went spring bird hunting with me 3x last year and loved it. I even toted her pink gun. lol. Already asked to go with me deer hunting on Thanksgiving . Love her more than I ever knew I could love something. Can't wait til she can pull the trigger on a bird/deer. Dang good shot too

Man can't beat that I have 4 yr old boy and 2 yr old girl just teaching boy is and outs of firearms and saftey....he's got a Crosman bb gun. ..my old man worked there for 15 years in Bloomfield I grew up with them and he will to....hope my girls interested in the woods too I won't mind taking 2 out
