  1. We had a pretty eventful morning despite the cold, blustery conditions. The big gobbler had hens up in the woods when three jakes came in to check out the dekes and the live hen that I was messing with out in front of the groundblind. We only had until 8:00 to hunt due to a baseball game and seeing how I'll be on my way to KY in the morning, we decided to go ahead and take one of them. This one put on a good show strutting and gobbling the whole way in. Isaac pulled off a nice 45 yd. shot with my Browning and cruppled him in a pile. Not a bad way to start off the season...

  2. The one thing I can take from the events last night and today thats away from the obvious is the shoot out that killed the older brother. Our brilliant state leaders feel you do not need more then 7 bullets to protect yourself, and they had a trained professionals shooting at the two suspects who fired a lot more then 7 rounds and could not stop the 2 brothers. If the team of skilled marksmen could not kill 2 kids with hundreds of bullets at hand how can people logically say u dont need more then 7 to protect yourself?!?!?! WNY I agree it will cost millions to put him on trial and us dopes are going to be paying for it.

  3. Do you think the families with firearms in their homes are feeling just a little safer than those without? This is the Second Amendment at work!

  4. I can tell you personally that the NYS ELA state test that my 8th grade students just finished this week was a grueling three days! The test consisted of 9 long passages with 72 multiple choice questions, 3 more passages and 3 short responses with and essay on day 2, and 3 more passages with 5 short responses and another essay for day 3. Grow, the sad part is that this test is for the teachers. It has no effect on the student what so ever. The test scores a student receive does not reflect the type of classes they take the following year. This test, which many parents are telling their children not to worry about or having them "opt out" is the same test that teachers are being elavuated on. If we truly want to improve the educational system, we should follow the model of other countries that have surpassed the United States. Most of those countries do not have standardized testing and they also tract their students into two categories. One as college ready and the second prepares them for a trade. In my honest opinion, today belief that every student should go to college is flawed. I have friends that have become incredibly successful from learning a trade and never attending college.

  5. This morning I lucked out and was able to buy several cases of ammo. On the way home I stopped at the gas station where a drop-dead gorgeous redhead was filling up her car at the next pump. She looked at the ammo in the back of my truck and said in a very sexy voice, "I'm a big believer in barter, big boy". "Would you be interested in trading sex for ammo?" I thought a few seconds and asked, "What kinda ammo ya got?

  7. My nephew scored on a jake this morning. Called in a big ole longbeard with ten hens but he followed the hens. Two jakes came in and at 25 yards that was close enough. Bird has a 4.5" beard with 1/2" spurs and weighed 17.2 lbs. it was a real quiet morning till 10 am when I got a hen fired up. Thirty minutes later the toms came in.

  8. I'll never forget the time I took Doris, Short Wormley's double amputee sister ,down to Abner Whipsnead's pig pasture to watch a concert by my favorite local band, Slim Quail and the Chicken ****in' Five... That was when Slim introduced his all time #1 hit song ... " I Used to Kiss Her on the Lips, But it's All Over Now.." He followed it up with his # 2 hit, that timeless Cajun Ballad, " Don't Wait up for the Shrimp Boats Mama, cuz I'm Comin Home with the Crabs.."

  9. Growie....I have heard that in order to get the Boston Bomber to confess everything he knows, they are going to strap him to a cot in a closed room and make him listen to " Barry Manilow's Greatest Hits" over and over for 24 hours a day/7 days a week until he spills his guts... For me it would take about 15 minutes.....<<grin>>.....

  12. If this test is indeed intended to evaluate the teacher(in reality, the test results are a small portion of overall teacher evaluation), how fair is that to educators? "Don't worry about it! Opt out! It means nothing."- not great motivation for students to show off their teacher's potential. How about my 6th grade student on Tuesday whose mother has not yet been heard from since she ran in the marathon? Here's an A student and stellar child, who was able to only compete 23 of the 42 questions on day 1-not easy to read stories through bouts of tears. I as a sixth grade teacher would much prefer to be tested to show my proficiency then use my 11 year old students to prove my worth. By the way, the majority of the new teacher evaluation is still related to the principal's evaluation and rightfully so. The only problem is that the principal's evaluation is also the main means to REMOVE A TENURED TEACHER and we all know how rarely that happens. Yes, tenured teachers can be removed when the school proves the teacher is sub-standard. Thats where the issue lies...administrators who do not have the balls to do ther job. Tenure = due process. It is not a force field. My biggest problem with being a teacher is dealing with the union. I feel the union needs to "police their own" in some ways. If the teachers union knows someone is a bad teacher, they should be at the forefront of improving the teacher or removing the teacher from the union(weakest link principle).

  13. Problem a lot of times with this type of testing is that teaching to test becomes more important than teaching and understanding the subject. There is a difference.

  14. One of your best freinds in a swamp can be a good walk or poke stick to test areas that look bad. The other is a rope strong enough to pull you out if you get stuck. And a cell phone.

  20. This situation in Mass. shows that you need guns to protect your family from crimnals. Locked up in your home waiting for the all clear when you hear a rustle in your basemant you investigate and surprise a chechnen bomber hiding in your home if he is armed YOUneed to be armed to equalize the scenario. The N.R.A. should capitalize on this going forward. I am hoping this will open everyones eyes and shut down the agenda to take away our 2nd amendment rights ..

  21. "Lockdown", I hate that word. To "lock me down" is to limit my ability to protect myself. Citizens in a democracy should not be "locked down"!

  22. The problem with that scenario JimR, is that there would be a high likelyhood that the police may fire on someone shooting out there apartment window, without realizing that person had good intentions. I wouldnt suggest sticking your nose into a police gunfight unless you have no other choice.

  23. Ahhhhhh, there it is. But I am the anti hunter, right? You try to insinuate that I dont want people hunting in this place or that, etc. You sir, are the poster child for hunters that are bad for our sport. You are the type that gives us a bad name.
