  1. You wouldn't know it by the amount of snow in my yard, but turkey season will be here soon. Let's see your gobbler mounts from past hunts. Think spring! I took this bird in GA last spring. 20lbs, beards were 11 1/8", 9 1/2", 8 1/2", spurs were 1 1/8" and 1". Inside, with one I did myself several years ago. This one I took in NY with my bow last year, if the GA bird wasn't already at the taxidermist this one would have been. 24lbs, 10 5/16" beard, 1 7/16" spur on one side and the other busted off at 1". The fan measures 30" side to side.

  2. I own a Recurve, compound and Crossbow. My bow of choice is the Recurve and I use my crossbow in Ohio and Pennsylvania. In the two fore mentioned states I have seen no adverse effects from using crossbows and have actually seen more hunters come back into the sport because of them. Look around people, we are getting older as a group and the young are not flocking to this sport, If allowing crossbows in New York brings additional people to this sport, or allows a current Hunter to continue on doing what he loves, I don't see a problem with it. We are becoming our own worst enemies with all this in fighting. All you have to do is look toward Albany and see what our elected officials have done recently to understand that we are now a minority. I have hunted for over 50 years, and have hunted all over this great country and have never seen things as bad as this. We need to come together folks.

  4. Forget the steps and look at what their end goal is .... The complete elimination of private firearm owner ship and a repel of the 2nd amendment. So they will take baby steps that they think they could pass to get them closer to their desired end. If you don't think registration is the first step to confiscation .... Then let's ask why registration is even needed.

  6. I'm not sure that I support crossbows in N.Y. for hunting For those proven handicapped or disabled and who actually, can't physically draw a bow, I can go with it. I'm an older guy so bear with me on this. Once upon a time an archery season was created with the intention of a hunting season for the use of a primitive weapon. Archery and shooting a bow require considerable hunting and shooting skills and you need to be close to your game and remaining undetected in your draw and hold to place a shot. Deer and Turkeys pick up on movement very easily. That's where the primitive aspect comes in and your are at a disadvantage and the game your pursuing has the edge. I believe a crossbow has a distinct advantage over a bow. Hunting with a crossbow requires no movement other then pulling the trigger and requires no holding of the bow weight and choosing when to draw and make a shot and remain undetected in motion. I would consider a crossbow to simply be a gun shooting an arrow and not a primitive form of hunting. I will agree that the crossbow is a weapon and primitive, but it was a huge improvement over shooting a bow. Lets see, gun stock, cock it once and a trigger. Just stay still and I have all day to take a shot at prey at my convenience and all I move is a trigger? THAT'S A HUGE ADVANTAGE! In my opinion, a cross bow requires very little skill to shoot, just sight it in. I've shot cross bows with ease. Much easier then shooting a bow! Should they be legal to own, I think so. Should they be legal to hunt with in archery, hell no! This is of course my opinion and I'll propablly have people respond that I'm a Leftist and a Communist liberal that should rot in hell. My response ahead of time is that if you need a cross bow to hunt, your either lazy or can't shoot a bow worth a **** and your trying to take the easy way out. Thanks for listening.

  7. well, i only have been using T-Bones tactics even tho i said i was going to try closing my eyes. however. i am extremely excited to say that for the past week and a half or so i have stopped blind bale, uncovered my sights and started shooting regularly again. I have been blind bale shooting for about 2 1/2 months now just about every day. Since i have been shooting regularly again, my pins float with ease comfortably over my target. I shoot at just about the 20 yard mark and have been shooting at a bulls eye at around 5" around and every few days making the target smaller and shooting less arrows since my groups are practically touching each other with a quarter size group. I use like a 1" piece of black electrical tape and put the arrows dead in at 20. i went through a few arrows since the groups were getting very tight and i only sling about 2 arrows at time, twice a day. feels good to be able to feel this comfortable and confident behind the bow again. its very funny how by reintroducing my anchor to myself that i can do it every time the same way. figured id give an update to how it was going. Cant wait for the warmer weather to shoot outside and push that target out some more and get in on some 3d shooting this year.

  8. All bows (longbows, compounds, crossbows) allowed in archery season, all guns allowed in gun season. One buck tag each year, and DMPs allocated as they need to be, no either sex tags that cover the whole state. Knock a week off of the end of gun season, leave a gap, then have late ML/archery as is. Ahhhhh, simple, and would make for an even better late season. Hunters would become more selective with buck harvests and does could be managed more effectively. A guy can dream cant he? Lol

  11. I went to the gun show today in Hamburg NY, "Niagara Frontier Gun Show" (or something to that effect) and was pleasantly pleased to once again see that the Erie County Pistol Permit people were there to facilitate the sales of handguns for residents of Erie County. I don't know how many years they have been doing that but I believe at least three?? That has really got to help both the vendors and of course the permit holders get the guns in the hands of the LAW ABIDING people. I saw a ton of transaction being done and almost pulled the "trigger" myself but held back............................. I also saw I believe Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Dept there doing transfers too. So, a big hearty thank you to those Erie County and Cattaraugus County staffers doing a Saturday & Sunday gig to help us all out.

  12. I don't have any actual mounts but this is how I display my beards and spurs. The two on the left are from the 2012 season and the one on the right is from 2013.

  13. I made a few that way probably 10 years ago or so. A lot of guys wanting to make their own calls start out that way. Once you make a few it will most likely go one of two ways, either you will satisfy your urge and get bored with it, or you will get bored with it and want to jump into true call making with both feet. After I made a few I didn't do any more calls for quite a few years, when I got the urge again I started to make wingbone calls to do something truly custom. One of these days I'll pick up a lathe to be able to do some other call types. This is a good source for pot call blanks and materials: http://www.customsawing.com/ These are some of the ones I put together from kits: A couple of the ones I do now:

  15. That's a good view from the point of the DEC... But to the hunter compromise means ... "I'm okay with the conservation side as long as you give me what I want, if I don't get what I want then screw conservation." That was my point... and with that the DEC sometimes ends up caving on good management practice to appease the self serving hunter who talks a big game about being all about the animal. The human condition is usually conservations worst enemy.

  17. Oh I know you werent talking about me specifically, just giving my opinion on the subject. I agree with you that my suggestion on a week between gun and muzzle loader being self serving. It is 100%. I believe that a 1 buck rule would tick off alot less people than mandatory ARs would, and i also believe it would make more hunters more choosy about what buck they shoot, while still allowing those that dont care, to shoot the buck of their choice. The way i see it is its all about managing the deer herd and protecting our hunting heritage. In order to achive both, you have to keep the hunters happy, so you put regulations in place that do a good job of both. Compromises on both sides have to be made.

  19. I'm in total agreement with this, but here is a good one for ya... I have talked to several biologists and asked them why we don't do it exactly how you described... none of them ( yes that was NONE) thought that it wouldn't make any difference and argued that their statistical means are just as accurate... I disagreed stating that nothing can be more accurate than actual numbers, but they remained steadfast in their opinion. Kinda tells me there won't be any mandatory reporting any time soon (or at least the enforcement of it)... probably because it might eliminate a state job or two if we made it too easy.

  20. Can't answer your question about the DEC, but I can tell you that I have seen more fisher in nothern Cayuga and western Oswego counties in the last 5 years than the 15 before that. I had one within 5 yards last year while turkey hunting. After he left, my 11year old son whispered to me, "how do they taste"? I wonder if the DEC knows their numbers are growing and are trying to get a grasp on how many there may be.

  21. I saw one while bowhunting this year. It came by at about 25 yards. I took me a few minutes to figure out what the heck it was. Pretty cool though!

  22. Have you discovered Face Book yet? It operates like a viral analog and it is now days an absolute must. Another thing, forums, such as this one, which throttle individuals and/or allow other individuals to go on about stuff they no nothing about, need to shape up. When you got 2 or 3 forum members out of 350 people in the entire state who raise deer, speaking authoritatively for 800, 000 hunters while mocking the DEC and wildlife science in general - you got issues as they say...

  23. You know, even today I often walk through a stretch of woods at the end of the day and spot something that brings back memories of 20, 30, 40 years or more ago. It may not have anything to do with a kill, just a recollection of a time long ago that I walked the same trail out. It is weird, just kind of a flash-back to a younger age. Of course I have lived and hunted this same valley since I was 11 years old, so there are a lot of memories here. But great memories in the woods are not always linked to a kill. There is an old beech tree that never fails to bring back great memories when I see it. About 55 years ago, I carved the initials of my wife and myself in that old tree. That was long before we were even married. They are still there. It is amazing, something in the woods that can instantly take me back to age 15 everytime I stumble across it while hunting.

  24. I think the gun range thing is the best idea if you can talk her into trying it. She just may get hooked. Another direction of attack would be to bombard her with mental images of home invasions, and robberies gone bad, and some of the twisted brains of the wacked-out druggies out there, and just generally trying to convince her that there is a need for effective home defense. If she is concerned about the dangers of being armed, you need to show her the dangers of being unarmed.

  32. People are naturally resistant to change. The same thing occurred when the DEC wanted to allow Sunday hunting, people came up with a million bs reasons why it would ruin everything. Then it came and nothing changed. Same thing with the recent passing of the youth season. Paranoia is a strong emotion...

  35. I saw the moose on the trail from quite a distance away and I would assume he did too. But he kept on going further down the trail. I would have just waited a few minutes. The moose would have eventually moved. This guy barely waited a few seconds. Yes, once the moose charged, it was justifiable but it shouldn't have gotten to that in the first place. Someone once mentioned that the rule is you shouldn't do while carrying what you wouldn't not do if you were not carrying. Apparently having a gun on him gave him the attitude that he owns the road.

  36. I commented on this on a different site so........ -The guy has DEEP snow on either side of him that could easily caused him to get buried and then be at more risk from a attack. -The snowmobile may not have reverse and who knows how many other sleds are behind him (other than the second one at the end of the clip) and they'd all need to back up and who knows if that would have averted any more aggression from said moose. -That moose could have killed him on the first attack and then it came back for another round. -The shooter is carrying in "condition 3" and had to rack the slide to get things in gear. The first shot could have been a warning that the moose didn't heed and the resulting shots were pretty darn good IMO. Could he have quickly shot off the trail and went around? Would he have gotten stuck? Who else was with him and was that sled capable of the same maneuver? Did he provoke it by shouting and inching closer? Maybe........ Who took the first punch? Who finished it?

  37. I think the guy is an absolute idiot for making that video public.........I assume that if it was taken out of season and without a license there will be some type of investigation, really can't tweak your story when you'rs dumb enough to put the entire encounter out for the world to see.

  40. Instead of covering your sights, close your eyes and draw. Just feel the shot with your anchor points, and dont think too much. Do this at very close range so theres no chance of missing. It helps your draw and anchor to become second nature, so you arent overthinking the process. I had a bad bout with target panic a few years ago, and used that method to cure it. I was overthinking things, and going over all of the steps on every shot, just like you are. Once i stopped, i calmed right down.
