  1. Put the food plot in. 1/2 acre of Winter Rye. They seem to like it, and it seems to last, based on last years results. Tilled in a lot of clover, I would expect some of it to hang on. I just scratched the surface with the new tiller as this Winter Rye will grow on just about anything. Some fertilizer 5-10-10, and 240 pounds of lime. That makes 3440 pounds of pelletized lime added over three years on 1/2 acre. Still low on Ph, but does not seem to matter much. One interesting point, I sprayed just a tad light with round up ten days before, and it killed most of the grasses but not the clover, or most of it anyway. New tiller Plot Good times!

  5. I've got an old Mossberg bolt action 12 ga. for small game. Also a .22 bolt action marlin of unknown age (it was a hand-me-down from my dad way back when I was about 12 years old (who knows how long he had that, but it is getting some real age on it). I also have a .22 hornet. In a month, I will be using my 1999 Mathews MQ-32 and my 1970s autumn orange XX-75 aluminum arrows (I get my money's worth out of my purchases .... lol). When gun deer season begins, out will come the deadly .270 American Ruger bolt action. That has become the meat gathering gun.....Awesome gun. When the regular deer gun season finishes, out will come my Remington .223 for a bit of coyote and fox calling.

  6. great round for varmits up to deer sized game. You give up the heaver bullets that are available with the 30-06 but it is flat shooting and less kick (in equal rifles of action and weights). if you don't reload I would check around for availability of ammo before you make a decision.

  9. That looks neat. Certainly not what I was expecting to see.

  10. Too bad you couldn't get a good shot at the black ! That would be a cool "squirrel slam"... A grey, a black, and a fox in one hunt !

  11. What's their food source like ? That could be the leading factor. I hunt 70 acres and spend a lot of time in the woods there, barely see grey or red squirrels. Occasional fox squirrel. I completely attribute it to no food.

  12. Very nice; sure is different than the art I'm used to seeing! I assume you are the artist? If so then we can add you to the list of artists here on this forum.

  13. Expecting a little more growth this year as well. Maybe a lot more, as I planted a week earlier, it poured the day after I planted, and we are expecting some warm weather in the week ahead. Hope I did not plant to soon, as they say the deer like the WR short. It apparently gets rank if to tall. I "expect" them to keep it mowed though. Pic from last Nov.

  14. Time to smell the coffee! Any proposed ban of lead projectiles for whatever reason is just part of the incremental elimination of hunting. Lead poses an ingestion hazard primarily when its particle size is extremely small. There is an inverse relationship between particle size and adsorption by the body. Lead and many other metals become a problem when their particle size becomes very fine dust as in airborne dust or paint borne fine particles a thousandth of an inch in diameter or smaller. The fragments associated with bullets striking game are typically much larger and do not pose a threat. The dangers of lead bullets are greatly exaggerated by the left and our easily convinced "moral superiors". The most significant study shows the facts. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2008 tested lead levels in the blood of 700 North Dakotans. Most (81percent) had consumed wild game, including venison. Most (62 percent) ate venison at least once a week. None of the people tested had lead blood levels above the CDC's recommended levels. In fact, the average lead level was below that of the overall U.S. population. No one has ever been documented to have gotten sick from eating game killed with lead bullets. Not ever. The fact is, copper bullets will increase the already high cost of center fire ammunition significantly. For instance the cost of 270 Winchester increases from a typical $20 per 20-round box to $37 per box for Barnes 130 grain spire points. What bothers me the most is not the cost of ammunition for a hunt but how hunters will practice less with the high cost of ammunition. If you ask me commercially manufactured ammunition has already gotten prohibitively expensive and is stopping a lot of hunters from practicing with their selected ammunition beyond bench shooting and sight-in. Other facts: Large slugs and shotgun slugs tend to fragment much less. Copper rifle slugs fragment less but they too will also fragment. Their petals break off and they have some fragments ...it can't be helped...its a science known as "fracture mechanics". As an engineer I can tell you when copper moving over 2000 fps hits something, some fractures must occur. Copper yields more than lead but it also fractures and some small fragments will be created although less In number than with lead. Eventually since copper is also known to have toxic effects on humans, after it has been more widely used it will be claimed that even copper projectiles pose a risk. Copper has been shown to cause cirrhosis of the liver and many other diseases and death in humans. Copper hull paint has been used for years because it is toxic to marine life. It will then be claimed that copper and most other metals have at least some toxic effects and should not be used in game hunting. Eventually what this type of leftist political correctness will lead us to is a ban of all hunting using high velocity metallic projectiles because metal fragments are present to some degree in the meat of anything that is shot.

  15. Well my wife's water broke at 845 last night. We went to the hospital at 230 am and I'm still sitting here waiting to meet my little girl. Talk about nerve wracking. Such a mix bag of emotions between nervous, excited and scared as it's our first. Got that off my chest now I'll go back to watching all the computer screens.

  16. Today was the first day. Borngeechee, Shawnhu, and I went and gave it a shot. Saw a few, heard a bunch, but none of them have us enough of an opening for a clean shot. The leaves were thick and the mosquitoes were hungry. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  18. I've been using Spitfire 100 grain mechanicals for as long as I can remember, they fly exactly the same as field tips, exactly , no need to put one in a target... Mechanicals are expensive, and I have never had one not do the job but , sometimes cannot reuse after a kill..Spitfire doesn't have those stupid rubber bands which get messed up in your quiver.. Wouldn't hunt with anything else.. 1 1/2 cutting diameter ...can't wait to get out there and stick another one this year....

  19. Someone was just too lazy to call Dick's and do a price match… Thats B.S. But anyway that rifle/caliber combo should be an excellent hunting rig. Good luck.

  20. Well guys I went and bought a Savage model 111 30.06 with a Simmons scope with the accu trigger.I have not shot it because of my 84 per hr work week schedule and we got damn mosquitos so bad they will devour you but I really like it.Really kind of torqued at Bass Pro because I have bought three guns there since Feb and they would not match Dicks Sporting goods across the street.Dicks sold me the exact same gun for 120.00 cheaper.Same finish scope everything. They didn't even want to come down at all.I guess no more guns going to be bought at bass.Pretty anxious to shoot the 30 06

  29. I planted my small food plot a week ago Sunday (8/10) with turnips and Mean Bean Crush (cow peas and soybean). On Monday night I planted my 1 acre field with Northern Sweet Spot. A mix of perennial sweet rye grasses, clovers, trefoil and turnips (see link) as well as the interior part of the field with Clover King clover mix and alfalfa (see link). I went to take a look on Thursday evening and the clover had already popped and by Saturday the cow peas and turnips had started and on Sunday the rye grasses had started. Will post pics soon. http://www.outsidepride.com/seed/deer-food-plots/sweet-spot-northern-mix.html http://www.outsidepride.com/seed/deer-food-plots/clover-king-deer-food-plot-seed.html

  30. Today while driving between jobs I saw a guy riding a bike along the riverwalk near clinton st. with a pike on a stringer. The thing couldn't have been any more than 20". I was pissed and if I didn't have to rush to the job I'd have reported him Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2

  31. Not sure about musky behind kmart. I know they use to get the hybrids back there long ago when they stocked them, but it seems a bit dirty for pure strain. They prefer the clear clean waters further up near cv or cf or up near green. Have never got a musky in the chenango actually. Just Northerns. Have had some real beasts on at goudy while walleye fishing and found a 55 in dead musky down around murphys. I hear between appilacian and owego is good for them also but still havent caught one down there.
