  1. Found my first fawn of the year today! He didn't stick around long so I only got one burst of him in the same pose before he was gone with the wind! ...also pretty happy to get my first decent shot of a kingfisher the other day! I hope to spend a little more time trying to get some better shots of these guys soon.

  2. Well me and my buddy Josh went to check out a potential metal detecting spot yesterday evening. I was already running late but he convinced me to go (it wasn't too hard). We pull up and start walking towards the old house and I was tempted to go grab the detector but I knew my wife would divorce me if I took much longer. Instead I walked in to the front door. I immediately heard something in the ceiling. To me it sounded like a snake slithering. I figured it was some rat snakes mating. I held my hand up to stop Josh. "I heard something in the ceiling." I whispered. Just as I said that an ungodly sound echoed from the ceiling. It was part hiss, part growl and a quarter gargle. "And on that note, it's time to get the heck out of here." Josh said. "No way man. I gotta know what's up there." Well, y'all know me. I went back to the truck and got the camera. This is what unfolded. If something in the video doesn't make sense, I tried to explain everything in the description.

  3. When another member of your household calls the cops on you, it doesn't matter if they were needed or not. Pandora's box has been opened and you are the one they are coming for. You would be ordered by the cops to leave and all your gun rights will be taken at the same time. It's happened thousands of times in NY already since the SAFE Act passed. If you are lucky and have the money to fight the action in court, you may be able to get your guns back. But as illustrated by the original post, the odds are against you under the SAFE Act. I believe we will see a lot more of these calls in NY in the future because NY is going to encourage people to call the cops on gun owners as often as possible in order to go up their rectums with a microscope to find a reason to take their guns. Gun ownership in NY State is no longer the uncontested Constitutional right many gun owners still believe it to be. NY State has mounted a campaign to make all gun owners in the state suspect in the eyes of the public. Rule of Law is on the side of the gun owner, but the legal pursuit of it has been moved up to the US Supreme Court by NY State, and getting there takes years and costs a fortune, and that's if you are lucky enough to be able to do it. NY gun owners need to realize just how much of a threat the SAFE Act really is and start taking steps to avoid it's abuses.

  5. Just returned from a 2 week visit to New Zealand where I chased Tahr and Chamois around some hills for a week. Travelled from JFK to LAX, LAX to Auckland where I picked up gun permit, and finally AUK to Queenstown on the South Island. Around 32 hrs til I found a bed to crash in after leaving home. Queenstown NZ Rested up and had a day in town to start getting used to time change before driving 3 1/2 hrs North to get a helicopter ride into camp. Stayed in a converted shepards cabin and hunted private land; this area is active for domestic sheep and there were still a handfull around at lower elevations. Tahr were plentiful and had come down from higher slopes with the on coming winter. In general I had nice weather, with a few showers and some light snow; it was very windy and we had to wait for lower winds to get the helicopter ride out for an extra day, but we spent that on spotting and taking a look around. Front yard and primary hunting area; There were lots of bulls to look over and judge. I was looking for a mature bull and we set up on a few with a spotting scope to get a good look. I was very impressed with the Vortex spotter that was along. I like glassing hunts the best and can spend all day just looking over terrain for hidden animals moving out of hidden draws and gullies. Seen several Red Deer in the bottom and found a decent shed with 12 pts from a younger animal. In the small sunny bowl at top and the rock outcrop halfway up on skyline; We found what I was looking for and made a stalk from the bottom using terrain to cover the approach. Group contained a young bull, several nannies/young, and a very good bull. Closed to 200 yds on the ballistics and had a great rest with a rock out cropping as the bull hit the top of the ridgeline and seperated himself from the group. Very steep shot and let him quarter away a bit to hit him in the offshoulder. Rifle and load.......Blaser R93 with rail mount Swaro 3-12x50. Chambered in 300 Weatherby, shooting 180gr Barnes TSX sighted dead on for 200 yds. First blood for this barrel for me on this frame. He never took a step and dumped him right on the spot. Watched the puff of the exit in my scope and knew I hit him good instantly. He rolled downhill maybe 20 yds getting caught on a small flat. This bull is 9 years old and a bit over 13" along the front ridge of his horns that are chipped up from fighting; all I could ever ask for an awesome trophy bull.... Set up for some quick pics and caped him out. By the time we were done we had headlamps on, but lucked out being all the way at the top as the ridgeline ran right back to camp and only had a one slope to negotiate in the dark to get down.

  6. Heading out tomorrow for a weekend camping trip in the Schoharie Valley. A nice quiet weekend just me, the lil woman, and the dog. Cooking over the fire and ice cold beer! Man I can't even sleep I'm so stoked. Smell of the fire, bbq chicken tomorrow and a thick a$$ steak for Saturday night! Nothing beats being outdoors in the woods, even if it is a state campground!

  14. See, here is where the weekend warriors, or those who don't live, eat, and breathe hunting are actually doing a better job of serving as a management tool. Those hunters who have limited time to git-'er-done will actually have no problem shooting does, or whatever first comes by (usually doe, fawn, whatever). No antler fever or great expectations that they are supposed to be taking trophy animals. They are simply out there to get a deer (any deer) and go have a good breakfast and then go finish off their weekend chores. It's the ones that think they are experts that feel that they have to shoot only monster bucks. Shooting a lowly doe is beneath their station as an "expert" hunter.....lol.

  16. Great video! Sure did get my attention. That is one weird noise for a bird to be making.

  17. Wow what a cool trip. The planning and preparation that goes into a trip like this can sometimes be just as much fun as the actual hunt but I doubt it on this one! The scenery, game hunted and a chopper ride have to put this hunt at the top of the list in excitement. Great pics and outcome Dan, congrats on another great adventure!

  20. Tahr was my primary animal for the trip so that being done, we drove South to look for Chamois. I feel the continued good weather hurt my chances here as for the next several days animals were higher and higher to climb too. Some bad weather would have pushed a few down more looking to feed for some calories and where the girls go, the boys follow. But the scenery sure was fine..... One of the girls checking us out from above But we did spot and glass Chamois everyday and closed to 80 yds on a shooter as we crested the top on a stalk, but he was perched on a outcropping that would have had him drop a few hundred yards after a shot, and recovery may have been impossible. Later we made a good move on another prospective animal, but he was shy of what I was after and needed to spread his genes a few more years. Thats huntin'. Hunting over I spent a few days back around the Queenstown area where there was lots to see and do, jet boat rides, hiked a hill about the same as Marcy here in NY (rained and got soaking wet LOL)...... A huge THANK YOU! to Lawdwaz here for helping me out.... With extra days after hunt, I was able to secure NZ DOC paperwork and brought cape and horns home as checked bag. Larry called USF&W at LAX for me to confirm inspection on landing and it all came off perfectly with import paperwork. Wish importing trophies was always like this!

  21. You live a sheltered life...those type of stories among family members are very common. Those are darn right tame actually.

  22. Dinner was great! Certainly not what I was expecting........wonderful service, ambiance and food made it highly enjoyable. I'd recommend it in a heart beat if you are in the area. They are located on the east side of Main St, just at the intersection where you turn east to head to the 390.

  26. Sounds like our hunting camp on top of the hill. Accessible only by ATV or on foot. Kerosene heater, propane lights and stove, car battery for radio, carry-in water (dry-sink), bunk beds for two, kitchen table, 2 easy chairs, and a few folding chairs, all in a 12' x 12' cabin. Add in a bunch of tents, and it makes for some great family gatherings too.

  27. In the end it's just about going out and killing an animal to eat or put on your wall. Really not that important in life….guess as I get older the clearer I see things. lol take it all in stride.

  32. sent in this date, it does seem that if they the DEC can screw the archer they will. I have been a gun and bow hunter my total life ( 74 years young now ) I sure love the early start now of Oct 1, I have bad lungs COPD, and legs are about gone, so the early start in Oct give me the ability to hunt, when it gets cold below 40's, I just no longer can be out there, so the gun season is no longer for me. The bow season I want the chance to take a buck or doe. In my area, after this winter I am seeing just about a few doe's on my pasture areas. I would like the DEC to start being for the hunter and no the insurance agents or farmer that would love all deer gone. I sure wish the DEC would try to have a program were a hunter could get the ability to hunt local farms if there were reported crop damage, the DEC could pay for some of the amount of damage if damage is due to deer. West Va had a program like that, the farmers were listed by County area and each farmer could say how many could hunt per day and how many days he allowed hunting. A hunter would pay a extra $5 to a damage fund for the DEC to use. The program was a great one that I utilized when I lived down south.
