I went to greener pastures a couple weeks ago.... IA, 45 sheds, including 7 matched sets. Best year ever. Normally I find 15-20 there. Also, 6 more from OH. Only 1 in NY so far, but I've only been out twice here.7 points

Have I mentioned how much I hate squirrels? Lol. Found this one yesterday. Sadly from last year. No idea how I walked by it until now. 8" circumference between the G3 and G4 where my hand is. G2 would have been an easy 10" with a kicker based on the mass of where it is chewed off. <sigh>5 points

2 of the 3 dogs are supposed to be trained to find them (I was the trainer.) The youngest one doesn't even want to retrieve consistently, so until I get that straightened out, she's on hold. The big yellow one is a CRP expert. She specializes in pulling out old green antlers out of the deep, matted grass. She has picked up 6 so far this year. The black one has picked up 7 as well, but is more likely to pick up fresher ones. They generally work better alone- otherwise they just want to screw around and chase squirrels and rabbits. As the great Wooly said- most serious shed hunters won't deface an antler they find. I'm still in the hoarding stage and I don't think I'll ever grow out of it. I have no problem cutting deadheads up to make knife handles, but I walk too many miles to find the sheds. (I average somewhere around 7 miles per...) I do intend to make display cases to put them in at some point. For now I just hang them on the wall but they are dust magnets. Here's a set I found this year that gross scores a little over 160" with no spread credit:4 points

What a beautiful day it turned out to be today. Did the brakes and rotors on the 06 Dodge Stratus. Wife had washed and waxed it Thursday. She looks and stops like new now. Then we washed the new ride to make her purty. After the chores, I took the kids and my daughter's boyfriend for some good old fashioned plinking with the .22s. Lastly, we got ice cream at the local shop that opened last week. Great day!! Here are some pics.4 points

I absolutely think that a bowhunter education course should be required to use one.....4 points

So, all crossbow hunters are bozo's? I am sure they will feel good about that assessment. Poaching, it always comes back to that. It doesn't have a pile of beans to do with allowing full inclusion for the crossbow in archery season. Poachers will do what they do no matter the weapon or time of year. What's the real gripe about allowing full inclusion of the crossbow? I was also referring to the hunters ( especially bow hunters ) who complain about other people hunting or hiking on public land. Why not just be honest? Most archery hunters just don't want to share the woods. Read the threads around here. It's pretty evident. I never want to see air guns or muzzle loaders in the bow season, but saying a crossbow isn't welcome is just being selfish. Like I said, some pretend to promote hunting, but on their terms.4 points

That's funny! Most serious shed hunters wouldn't de-face a shed antler find in ANY way! I've gotten over that stage and put 4 new lamps together this weekend, lol Sometimes I can hear them scream when the saw teeth cut into their bones.... it hurts me too, but I try to block that out now! I'd rather see someone else enjoy them instead of watching their color fade and sit in a bunch of covered bins until someone wants to look at them anymore. Quite honestly, they're just taking up too much room in the first place, and secondly I've come to the conclusion that shed hunting is more about "the hunt" for me than it is in collecting them. That's why I take pictures of them all! Nice haul sambone!3 points

Spin it any way you want. The bottom line is not allowing a crossbow in the archery season is just more proof that too many bow hunters have tunnel vision and really don't care about promoting hunting. Enjoy the thread. I really was looking forward to someone explaining the truth about why you are against full inclusion for crossbows. But it's clear, there is no factual base, just opinions and personal choice.3 points

I love traditional archery, & I have a lot of respect for people who hunt that way, until they start to look down on others for their choice of weapon. I don't see anything bad about a crossbow. Just like any other weapon, it's humane as long as you practice & know your limitations. Most of all, I like that it will get more people out there, which is very important, considering our dwindling numbers.3 points

any hoisted up high in trees with fishing line ? My buddy hid a boatload at his house and surrounding woods last year that were stuffed with mini Snickers etc. The next day he learned raccoons were very good at finding hidden chocolate stuffed plastic eggs He opted for dimes , nickels and such this year3 points

I mounted my 6th and final deer from last season yesterday. Now, I just got to keep an eye on him while he dries and then do the finishing work... The pose we were going for... Unfortunately, the original cape starting slipping bad when I first attempted to do the mount a few weeks ago. I had to find a replacement cape that would match the light orangish color of the buck... Also, I remounted my October bow buck last weekend...2 points

If and when the crossbow becomes a piece of archery equipment,a archery course would be mandated. This is something that NYCC has asked for from day one.2 points

Oh for crying out loud! ( Pun INTENDED! ) Is there anything bow hunters will allow in their season? I mean seriously, what's the major argument for not allowing the crossbow during the full archery season? Like people stated, it has limbs, it has a string, you use an arrow ( a bolt is just a fancy way to say really short arrow ), the string is pulled back compressing the limbs, when shot the limbs expand forcing the string forward, hence propelling the arrow. Sounds like a bow to me. As for hunting pressure.............Seriously? What's the difference between 100 people buying a long bow, compound, or a crossbow to hunt in your area? There isn't any! We say we want to promote hunting, but yet, most people who hunt public land think they own it and don't want anyone else in there. I see no reason not to allow full inclusion, even in the areas they left out for now.2 points

We used to really like going at night. Had a couple spots on state land with ponds full of them. Me and a couple buddies would leave Saturday afternoon, make a small camp near one of the ponds and fish most of the night. It was good times. Couple poles in the water a few beers and life was great. They sure made a great breakfast! Not many made it home. LOL I prefer them just pan fried with nothing on them, but I have been known to use cornmeal on them.2 points

In what appears to be a case of "sport killing," a pack of wolves slaughtered a herd of elk in one night, Wyoming wildlife officials said Friday. Nineteen elk, mostly calves, were found dead several days ago at a feeding ground near Bondurant, a town southeast of Jackson, said John Lund of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. A contractor delivering feed to the herd discovered the dead animals. Lund said wildlife officials are concerned because wolves usually eat what they kill or come back later to feed. "It appears to be sport killing," he said. The pack suspected of killing the elks has nine wolves, he added. There are about 1,100 elk in the area, he said, and about 7% of the population has been lost to wolves this winter. "There is a significant concern among wildlife managers," he said, noting that there are no reports of wolves attacking humans. "Our concern is big game." But there's nothing the state agency can do, he said. Wolves are federally protected and managed. In 2012, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service planned to take wolves off the endangered list and turn over management of the animals to Wyoming, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department website. That would have allowed state-regulated hunting of wolves. But a federal judge ruled in 2014 that wolves remain under federal control and be relisted as an endangered species. The federal agency could kill wolves that are attacking livestock but not wildlife, said Mike Jiminez, the wildlife service's Northern Rocky Mountain Wolf coordinator, according to the Casper Star Tribune. Wolves, once nearly extinct, were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park in the mid-1990s, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department website. The number of wolves grew and spread across the region. In what appears to be a case of "sport killing," a pack of wolves slaughtered a herd of elk in one night, Wyoming wildlife officials said Friday.Nineteen elk, mostly calves, were found dead several days ago at a feeding ground near Bondurant, a town southeast of Jackson, said John Lund of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. I now have another 5 big piles of brush to burn next winter, but the heat made me quit. My blood hasn't acclimated to that kind of temperature yet ..... lol. I'm afraid it is all going to coax out the buds on my fruit trees early again and then start in with the frosts. Fruit production in valley country of western NY is a pretty tough thing to make work. This year has the look of another wipe-out ..... again.1 point

Sounds like a good deal. Exactly what kind of work are you looking to have done? Carpentry? Field work? A little bit of everything? The owners heart is definitely in the right place, trying to help vets and kids. Hope someone that lives closer will be able to help you guys out. Best of luck!1 point

They had to go with the muzzloader stamp for crossbow , as a new licence requires a course, but laws dictate you must have hunted with said implement for 3 years before you can teach a course. So no seperate x box course was possible, putting under muzzleloader circumvented the nys bowhunting lobbiests. It should of been made archery equipment from the get go,this just shows powers of lobbiests .. all for making it archery equipment and the couse teaches responsible shot placement, ranges, tracking and recovery of hemoraging game.. Every x bow hunter I know is a bow hunter. So including in entire season is not going to affect much here locally, having the bow course will eliminate the oh its. Just like a gun so I'll buy it crowd. Overall this is good commonsense legislation!!1 point

So many things to do and such an insufficient amount of time to do it. Yeah, we have all kinds of people trying to tell us all about what good citizens must do on a daily basis to remain good citizens. We are preached at, cajoled, told we have no rights to opinions because we don't devote our entire lives (and then some) to studying, and researching and spying on those agencies that are supposedly charged with carrying out the duties that they are paid for. But the truth is that even those doing the preaching have not reached expert status on all those things that we are supposed to be keeping track of. How do I know that? ..... Simple, there are not enough hours in a day to become subject experts on all those disciplines that we are supposed to become experts at.1 point

The best time to put down weed killer is actually in the late fall. As late in November as you can go. The weed will store the killer all winter and never germinate in the spring. Thats what I do and my lawn has always been pretty weed free.1 point

Here is the one that afflicted me with the Rimfire disease. The Remington 541S was based on their target model called the 541X. Some of you folks may remember Remington's economy rifle the 788, it had rear locking lugs and an extremely fast lock time that resulted in accuracy that many times surpassed their flagship model 700. The 541S is basically a mini 788 action with the same type of rear locking lugs and a very fast lock time. Al1 point
