  1. Well look, there really is two parts to the safe shot rule: 1. Identify the target (not "pretty-much", but absolutely without question) 2. Be sure what or who is in the line of fire behind the target. (pretty much impossible at night or with a flashlight) How on earth can you satisfy both of those requirements in the dark, or in a flashlight beam? How can you know for sure what is just outside the beam, moving into the line of fire? This is one target ID problem that blaze orange has no hope of solving. The dangers of night hunting are obvious, and I think unavoidable. So what can be done about it?
  2. So is mange something that the critters can get over, or is it always something that sooner or later will kill them?
  3. Now wait a minute folks. Winter has not thrown in the towel yet. Some of the most devastating storms that we have gotten in the past have come in March. I can't remember the year, but I do remember one year where I had to hire a payloader to clear the driveway after one of those March storms. No pick-up truck with a plow could handle the 3+ feet of wet, sloppy-gloppy snow that came that year and my 1000' was not something where shoveling by hand was even considered.
  4. This is looking like a repeat of last year. I kind of like this global warming stuff .......lol.
  5. Been there.....Done that. Oh, not the motorcycle, but I have had some huge squatty old oaks that had weird shapes to them that just made great gun stands.
  6. The facts are as they fantasize them to be. Their facts are fanciful creations that suit their versions of anarchy to justify and excuse whatever chaos and mayhem that they need to give themselves their version of purpose.
  7. Don't forget about our boy Chuckie Schumer and his merry gang of obstructionist. Democrats who are doing everything in their power to keep Trump from assembling his cabinet and carrying out the needs of the country. These are people who put politics ahead of the welfare of the country. Yes, they are democrats. And that is why we care about the democrats. And we have the roving gangs of burning and looting rioters who perform their acts of lawlessness in the name of democrats. And then there is the major media with only one exception that is even willing to mention all those positive things about republicans that you want to hear about. It is not on the media agenda to let the American people see positive successful alternatives to their socialistic ideologies. Their party affiliations are aligned with the democrats such that they become the overwhelming mouthpiece of the democratic party. Actually the post makes the brilliant point that the ones the left likes to portray as the heartless haters are really the recipients of more hate from the left than the libs want to admit to. That was clearly demonstrated best by the guy who was beaten in the street for voting for Trump. I think the article posted by Rattler was one of the most on-target pieces of concealed truth that puts the whole subject of just who the haters are in this country in a nice concise little package. I know the libs really would just as soon that nobody would notice, and when somebody finally points it out, much effort is expended attempting to disregard it and to get others to send it back to the hidden shadows. But that doesn't make the dirty little truths contained in that article go away. So why do we care about the democrats? ....... Because they are the glue that holds all these haters together.
  8. Can coyote survive in the wintertime with the loss of that much hair? I would think they would freeze to death.
  9. I have huge brush piles every year that I burn during winter months. They really are not located in any area where a brush-pile fence would have any use. However, brush is a major building feature for my hunting blinds (gun and/or bow).
  10. He has cleverly found a way to get his message out without filtering it through the commie media. If tweets are what it takes, then tweets it is! Televised press conferences are another of the very effective ways to get the real news out and Trump has shown that he is very adept at "forcing" his achievements out to the public. The guy was masterful in the way he man-handled the press. It is about time someone stood up to these socialists and showed the world that the mainstream media has been taken over by enemies of the country and our way of life.
  11. You know, I've got a good memory, but its just a little bit short, but I remember somebody on this site that posted a couple of great videos of a canoe camping trip up to the Adirondacks. The videos and the trips were absolutely fantastic and quite detailed. But I can't recall that he ever posted anything else, so I don't remember the name. If somebody can remember who it was, he would have a lot to add to this thread.
  12. It appears that Upstate Redneck didn't take too long establishing another membership identity.
  13. Oh come-on guys. I love the guy. He comes here and makes an ass out of himself for our amusement......who can't love the guy? Look at all the many hours he spends here entertaining us, providing a real live target for abuse and ridicule.....lol. I love his commie views. He displays, in a way that no one else really could, exactly the fools that libs are and their twisted versions of what passes for "thinking". He's like a walking advertisement for Conservatism. He and others like him, along with his rioting comrades, are the reason that Trumps approval numbers are rising. Every word and action by these people serve as perfect examples to the majorities just what this country needs to guard against. We shouldn't discourage them. You can't have a return to greatness in this country without the wackos from the left supporting the effort through their words and deeds, serving as examples of what has been breaking this country for decades. Feed the troll and keep him around and on display. He really does serve a useful purpose.
  14. You didn't think that the safe act was the end of it did you. The fact that the safe act was passed and has resisted all gun-owner efforts to erase it, and the fact that Andy got re-elected, has simply emboldened the anti-gun nuts all the more. I'm sorry folks, but that safe act exposed just how weak the gun lobby really is. There will be bills like these coming out of the woodwork now.
  15. Hey, maybe you could leave the book stores alone for those that actually read. Look for some hole in the wall where you can hangout with your own kind and enjoy your drugs before you head out to one of your burning and looting sprees. You could all stand around a burning barrel with the other comrades and fantasize blowing up the Whitehouse.
  16. Just don't wait too many years to do it. You might all of a sudden find that time can wipe out your ability to handle adverse camping conditions. I worked in quite a few of these kinds of back-pack trips, but I will say that I can't really do it now......lol. But the memories of some of those trips are priceless.
  17. I know whenever I find or see something peculiar, I often theorize with the big "why" question, and often guess what circumstances might be behind it. I know there are a lot of things that are reported on the news that make me wonder just why a sane person would ever do them, or internally attempt to fill in the blanks even though I know I'll never know the details for a fact. Whether we want to admit it or not, I think to one extent or another we all do that.
  18. That must be quite a camera/lens system that you have there. The pictures are top-rate.
  19. Ha-ha-ha .... I suppose today I would probably be arrested for child abuse, but I actually made my kids earn their allowance. I know that's a barbaric thing to do, But they actually had livestock to water and feed, manure to remove, rocks to pick, limbs and branches that needed to be stacked and burned every year. And yes, occasionally we all would have to get on the business end of a shovel and clear out our 1000' driveway. Of course I was raised under the same philosophy..... If you are given a buck, you earn it. Allowance was a sum of money that you were rewarded with for doing your chores and other things around the house. That training and work ethic set me up for a prosperous adult life. That's also probably why I didn't vote for Hillary ....lol. But anyway, a parent letting their kid(s) flop on the couch while good money is paid out for shoveling snow is also teaching their kids lessons for adulthood. Every time I see these wandering shreds of human debris at these protests I know that that lesson of a "free lunch" turned into a lifestyle.
  20. My very first deer hunt was with a high school buddy. We hauled a bunch of stuff up the hill (approximately 3/4 of a mile) and built a lean-to out of poles, branches, and leaves and spent three days and nights up there, eating a squirrel here and there along with our other food supplies, and just generally roughing it. By the way squirrel cooked over an open fire on a stick looks like a lot better idea than it actually turns out to be. Nothing wrong with the taste of the squirrell, but when it was done, it was a pretty tough decision as to whether to eat it or make a pair of shoes out of it. No deer, but we had a lot of fun. We did manage to stay warm even though we got about 6" of snow right off the bat. 4 of us guys from work went on a do-it-yourself moose hunt with tents. We had two canoes and a 8' aluminum boat with a 7.5 Eska motor. We drove up to Shining tree to Three Bears Camp, and rented a cabin (Canadian law required the us of an outfitter). In the morning, we took dirt roads (only a little better than log roads) for 40 miles. Off-loaded the boat and canoes and supplies. Got into a large lake...went to the other end of that....portaged 150 yards.... into another lake and went to the swampy end of that lake. By the time we were done, there wasn't even the sound of an airplane. We did get a moose on that trip. It was great! No down-sides, just fun. Of course we spent the whole year planning it and driving everyone at work crazy with practicing moose calling.
  21. So really, the story is not whether you can bring it to vote, or even if you can somehow get it passed. The fact is that you have to have enough overwhelming support that you can over-ride the governor's veto. I hate to discourage anyone from trying, but the time for fighting The Safe-Act was before it got passed (in the dead of the night). We even got a second chance at it all through the general election for Governor and that didn't work so well for us either.
  22. My cell-phone is for outgoing calls only and those are restricted to emergencies only. The only reason I have it is in case I plop over on the hill and need to tell somebody about it (if I can). My wife makes me carry it. It never gets used. It is one of those pre-paid "not-so-smart" phones. Nobody has the number and it is never turned on, so I can't be harassed by the darned thing.
  23. Do not confuse discussion for whining. It's not the same thing. But I will admit that everyone, well almost everyone, does have an opinion and a willingness to discuss it. I get a bit frustrated listening to it all, but in the end, I'm damned glad that hunters still have enough passion over the sport that they are willing to offer those opinions. I think that there are signs that more and more hunters are losing that passion and the hunter numbers and activity seems to be bearing that out. So go ahead people, whine away. It shows that you still care.
  24. I am at the age where if I stop moving ..... I will "stop moving". Yeah it's a struggle, but I'm still a cheap bast*$d, and refuse to pay someone for something I can still do myself. That includes digging and chopping out about a dozen stumps last year, and hand clearing a new huge area of yard and burning up 10 huge brush piles. I'm a mean critter on the end of an axe or brush-hook ..... lol. But anyway, the message is that if you like spending time on the right side of the grass, physical activity is where it's at. People can cheat and avoid all the activity they want, but it won't be too many years before their activity level will no longer be optional for them. Use it or lose it! I've seen it too many times.
  25. Ha-ha-ha ..... for the most part, the auto went where you pointed it. It did not cause you to lose your mind and drift over into other lanes of traffic, or drive off the road because you weren't able to walk and chew gum at the same time. The auto was a basic machine of transportation, and not a narcotic to recede and escape into as these cell phones have become. Comparing phones to cars is not what I would call a very good analogy. Sure, there may come a day when phones become something more than the current drug of choice, and there certainly are things about phones and their use that have done everything from streamlining business to actually saving lives. But just like the auto, the ability to be misused has changed their value in a whole lot of ways that definitely can be not so wonderful in a lot of cases.
