Welcome aboard! Great site with great people, glad to have another experienced hunter! Join in the conversations. We like to argue a lot about many things, don't take it personal its just the internet! Glad to have you! PS: Nice buck in your avatar! -
Again great advice guys! I would like all the posts above but I ran out of likes!!!

Great advice! Good idea to give her another few hours, mark the direction she was going. Pull out and grab some food that should give enough time for her to stay bedded and hopefully bleed out. When you come back be a detective and slowly track the direction of the blood marking every spot to draw a line in the direction she was going. You should be able to retrieve her in 3 hours if you can wait that long. Hope she is within 200-300 yards as long as you can wait a few hours. Good luck and keep us posted!

There will always be factors that man can not compensate for. Doe/buck ratio is one, climate is another along with population per square mile. Weather as we all know can shut deer down regardless of the time of rut, photo period and or moon phase. It's just a guide but the funny thing is the fawn births seem to coincide with it. I focus on November 5-20th but sometimes like to go later for possible snow. Sometimes it backfires with too much snow and many times we get lucky with a fresh dusting! I am getting pumped, things seem to be heating up!!!

Those pics of the bucks sparring is awesome! Thanks for sharing! Good luck! Looking forward to your post and RUT!!! I love this time of the year!

Very VERY cool! Welcome to the Brotherhood! Congratulations on your first outing and successful hunt! AWESOME!!!

I use Permethrin for LI it seems to work well. Lyme is the reason I did not hunt LI for so long, scary stuff! I make sure I spray the clothes as directed and it seems to work well, especially when layered. Early season I duct tape my boots and sometimes wrist to the first layer. I change all my clothes at the hunting spot and double bag them when finished. Might seem excessive but I hate ticks and the diseases they carry really scare me.

Congrats, hopefully the first of many. Like Joe said ANY ADK buck is a trophy. I agree 100% it is some of the hardest hunting I have ever done.
-
That's the age I thought it might be, wide chested bucks up their! The rack is very symmetrical, typical of good genes I would think. Man I am getting so pumped! Seems like the rut is getting close on LI!

10/18/14 Hooked up with a couple of friend whom I helped set a bunch of stands. Saw 2 bucks and about 10 doe on the highway going to the hunting grounds. My first time hunting this area, no sightings from me, one other hunter saw one deer. Predicting good movement tonight for my buddy Joe who is heading out to check some open area I saw on Google maps. Looking forward to tomorrow morning. My other buddy Al saw a 350-400lb Black bear a few minutes ago, called and you can tell he was rattled from his sleep, lmao. Bet a million he will be awake the rest of the day! Good luck to ya AL! My other buddy Tom got his first deer, CONGRATULATIONS Tom on your first deer!

WOW that is awesome Joe!!! He looks soaked! Amazing, your dedication is tried and true as and ADK deer hunter, hats off to you. Very cool! Did you weigh him, age estimate? You are getting me sighted for my ADK trip, hoping for another great adventure, deer or no deer!

No good luck so far.

I try to follow trails as often as possible most of the time they lead me in the direction I want to go at some point. Otherwise if I have to go through thick stuff I will put my arrow away and try to protect the bow, usually overhead. Tough hunting early season with so much foliage still up.

I use to be strictly a buck hunter. Things change, people change and the circumstanced on LI have changed. If I do not kill every doe I see the snipers will try to. Filming the chase allows others to enjoy and see what I do, not just as a, "look what I shot" but as an instructional and educational tool. Just because we all hunt in different ways should not make my way the proper way or only way and everyone should follow me. Again remember perspective. Try not to generalize everyone into one group. Like the PETA would say all hunters suck! Should I not watch a video of a new kid with his dad filming because all those who film just want to be famous? Or the coyote video kills some members post? Again remember perspective. Not everything is black and white. And not all who post videos want to be famous. Steve and Doewhacker and I have gotten into heated debates over many things but I still respect you both and now admire Doewhacker after hearing his story about his kids helping drag out a deer and other post. Enjoy others success and be happy you have the ability to hunt, life is too short to worry about some of these minor things!!!

Nice video! So true how we need to stick together and try to stop the in fighting. Some go for meat, others for trophy, some like to make it all about the challenge and limit the weapons they use while others just want to get any deer. Plain and simple we all hunt the same animal and should be happy with others success even if it's not on our terms. Very cool, thanks for sharing!

Welcome aboard, great site, enjoy. What type of help are you looking for. We have many people who post questions from gear, clothes, equipment and advice. One of the best tips I can give is to scout the area's you plan on hunting. Most successful hunters know how many deer are in the area and the routes they take daily.

LOL funny! Every pen and or pencil looks like an arrow. Anytime you volunteer for something you say "I volunteer as tribute!"

Very nice, glad you had a good time! Can't wait to get back up. The largest doe herd in the area always seemed to be by lost ponds to hell diver and back east to the top of the road where the river meets the road/camp site. One reason I liked to camp in the area, usually at lost ponds always good sign. Got my first buck in this area and missed 2 more. Great spot but it does get used a lot.

Lowering my MQ1 bow with my expert tying skills I see the knot start to slip about 7ft down and try lowering it quicker which just added to the momentum, in horror I see the bow slam on the rocks below as the sight goes flying. That sucked, I took a long brake after that.

2 Compass and maps, topo and satellite. GPS Knife Emergency blanket First aid kit TP in zip lock is a must as mentioned! Bandana/paper towel Drag rope Tupperware bowl for sandwich, energy bar/snacks Water, soda, energy drinks dressing gloves extra clothes, packable rain gear, socks, gloves, sweat shirt and pants in late season Toe and or hand warmers if you get cold Flashlights are a must with extra batteries and bulbs if you only have 2 Water proof matches and lighters, fire starters Pens to fill out your tag Extra ammo during rifle and release during bow New hunters need some form of communication. Phones are good if reception is good and batteries are charged. 2 way radios are great because you can use regular batteries, they last a long time but have issues if you are far away or have bad line of sight. Depending on the type of hunting depends on how well you need to be prepped. Some experienced hunters and people who hunt close to roads, houses or in easy navigation areas do not need as much gear. Those who venture into the unknown or go solo need to be better prepared.

I was up to 5 bikers on Monday! The solo one with white pants or shorts flying through the woods really caught my eye but he would not stop and give me a broadside shot! LOL j/k That was Rocky Point. First time in the area, nice spot. Called 2 doe into 7 yards but they busted me and I did not want to take a front shot. Did not see them until 10 yards. Mother doe and a yearling it looked like. Very interesting hunting with so many people in the area. I see you have to pattern the people and the deer, lol.

Great idea, I would imagine any type of recyclable plastic would work with a sharpie.

Nice just to get out! Hope this cold snap kicks some doe into heat! I am sure it will at least get them moving. Good luck this season, you started at a good time, my buddy and new hunter is getting a bit upset at no sightings with very good sign. Looking forward to reading your adventures!
