  1. Can't go wrong with a shotgun, interchangeable barrels are awesome for deer and bird. Plus shotgun is allowed in more areas.
  2. Yes I use bow and use it during muzzleloader.
  3. Going to let doe pass early season until the rut is done on private land, public land I will go for any doe on LI. ADK buck only. Looking forward to my first bow kill this year as doe are on the hit list for the first time. Fawns still get a pass as I am a sucker for cute.

Hope everything works out ok with the knee. You are a valued poster on this site! Not sure what got you upset but don't let a few bad apples ruin it, your experience and depth of knowledge is vast and your impute is highly regarded. This site is made great by people who care, help and give good advice and I consider you one of our top posters. STAY!!! We have many hunters who benefit from your knowledge and experience.
  5. Good luck this year! He is a beauty.
  6. The easy way to know people out east. Other than that you knock on some doors, send out flyers, business cards or go to a local farm stand and introduce yourself. You can inquire at town hall about any deer management access for bow hunting. It's hard work but your efforts will pay off. Be polite, its their property and have every right to say no but a honest thank you will go very far. And access granted should be treated like its your own property, leave no trash or gut piles in the open. Dress nice and clean if you knock on doors, it helps. Ask if they would like a flyer in case they know someone or change their mind when they say no. Many people grant access when you say thank you for your time have a great day! Just not that day for some reason. Good luck, hope some of this helps.
  7. RT I hope to get up and scout/bow hunt for deer with last years tags so opening day if conditions are good will be September 27th. If temps get too high I will bail and doing opening on LI or both if I come back early. High temps will keep me out of the ADK and some 70 degree predictions are leaning towards LI opening.
  8. 4 hunting since 1988, took my first in 2000. This year I will target doe on LI, game on!
  9. Very good advice. Remember when still hunting the most important thing is being still. Move less on dry crunchy days and slightly more when wet or quiet conditions allow. Wind is a big part, if the wind is not in your favor hunt another area where the wind will work in your benefit. Sun to your back is great if possible. One method I love is going back about a mile or so from the closest road and then still hunting back towards the road. Heavy pressure area's force deer into deep or thick cover. Get in early on high ground to view any swaps or low lying area where bucks might hide. Scraps, rubs and trails are a great place to start, especially early season, as the rut kicks in key on doe as much as possible. Use calls they work but use them sparingly and know what type of call to use. Realize they will peg your spot from over 200 yards away so being in some cover is essential. I notice older (smarter) deer usually like high places after a long night (Scent rises in the morning and comes down at dust) This will alert them to any possible predators below their bedding area. What type of land are you hunting, this makes a big difference depending on how large the tract is and how much hunting presser, buck/doe ration and food availability and wood thickness.
  10. Great way to start the season. I usually do very light tickle then pause for at least 15 min using a doe call to start it off followed by a grunt a few minutes later then the rattle sequence. Good luck, hope you get some action.
  11. A tripod is nice if you have it high enough you can see very far. (80 acre farm I could see 70 acres.) You need to have cover around it to be effective or get your camo set up as an alternative. Otherwise your are very exposed but a swivel seat is nice to have all angles covered. Not sure the deer will be use to it in one week. Ghost blind might be a better alternative and works great!
  12. That is awesome G-Man! Between that and these 2 rubs and a scrape I am pumped for hunting this year! Saw this Saturday. Seems like the testosterone is taking over.
  13. 2 black and one dark purple. I like dark colors so other people do not shoot at my arrows and I like dark fletching for hunting. I prefer the dark colors because they seem more natural in the woods.
  14. Good luck with him, nice buck.
  15. Baby moose with two deer fawns. Sounds good to me. Or look at first lights post.
  16. String peep, most consistent for me.
  17. Welcome aboard, great site and even better people, enjoy!
  18. I am not a deer hunter I am a protector of trees!!! Poor defenseless trees need protection! I promise to only go after the big tree killers. Some nice sign while hanging some stands with a friend before the rain today. Wow 2 weeks until Northern zone opener! This got my blood pumping!
  19. Looks like the same buck. I would think somewhere in the high 130s but hard to tell from that far.
  20. Many good replies here. Filming or having someone watch your form. Peep alignment and anchor point consistency. Shoot at a blank target it helps with form. Draw with eyes closed and see if peep is perfect. Ask the bow shop to add a kisser on the string, sometimes this extra anchor point adds to consistency. Make sure you are not over bowed or are shooting too many arrows, both can lead to bad form. When you shoot, hold your form like someone is taking your picture and try to use back tension regardless of release type. Follow through, VIP I use steps to shoot. 1 Knock arrow raise arrow rest, estimate range 2 Full draw with peep perfect 3 Get target in view 4 Pick a pin for aiming and zero in 5 Use back tension to fire release holding form after shot (Follow through) Good luck, hope some of this helps and you get it resolved.
  21. LOL!!! That was funny Oblivitar! Ethically he did the right thing, but next time call the DEC because he is now a "poacher" in the eyes of the law. Until he finishes the meat... PS: Get rid of the evidence quick!
