  1. Become an expert with your weapon, range trees and other noticeable spots where deer travel so you will not have to range them if a deer pops out. Stay within your effective range. I can shoot out to 70 yards with my bow but I want a shot less than 50 yards with 0-40 being my lethal range. Practice how you will hunt, if you plan on using a stand then practice from the same height and distance. Hunt where you see the most sign and deer. I usually do not use calls until rut kicks in but a high pitched grunt call is very effective when used properly. (Simulating a young buck.) Do not over use your calls. I typically use a doe in heat call once every 20 minutes max and only call roughly 4 times a day. Grunt tub is used less and is usually to respond to another grunt from a buck or to try and call a buck in closer. Be safe, use a safety harness if you go up a tree. If you go solo let someone know where you plan to hunt and what time you should be back. If cell phone works where you hunt bring it and make sure it is charged. If any gun hunters are possible where you hunt put some orange on you. Good luck! Hope to see some pictures of your success!
  2. Welcome aboard! Enjoy, great people on this site!!!
  3. Me personally, never. Not even for bear. One of the main reasons I hunt is for the challenge and that would take away a big part of my challenge. I would not feel as if I earned the animal. More like shopping at the bait pile. No I do not see food plots the same as baiting. Not even close.
  4. Someone remind me not to piss off Zag, if I ever do lol. That sounds like a good size Zag, possibly shorter for us small people.
  5. Mathews Helium for early season bear/deer/coyote/small game ADK, Southern Zone and LI deer hunting till Jan. Winchester model 94 in 44 Mag, Marlin 30-30 for rifle season.
  6. Nice gun Edbone, I have the Savage model 110, great gun. The most accurate gun I have, I call it old reliable. (Better than my 308 Shhh.) Congrats and good luck with it! Bought mine in 88 and it still works like a charm. Usually 3-5 shots are all I need to confirm it is accurate. Some tips: Clean barrels perform best. Make sure you clean the barrel and put a light coat of oil for hunting season and after every shoot. Keep your scope on the lower power when hunting, you can always turn it up if they are far away. (Hope I never make that mistake again!)
  7. We had a good showing for our Suffolk Archers 3D shoot a week ago. We had about 90 people. Looking forward to the Silver Arrow shoot this weekend. Come on down and join us! Open to the public.
  8. Junk, but some swear by it. Not for me.
  9. If you do not have enough time to do this stuff, pick up a good book on the subject. Or several. All the information Doc and Philoshop posted above is key. The best deer hunters scout and already know a few spots that hold many deer and have picked out a few to target. Study topo and satellite maps, understand how other hunters will push deer and try to get away from the crowd if possible. Hunt as long as possible, deer move most during dusk and dawn but will move during the day especially during rut. Never give up EVER! Stay alert, be aware of everything around you and become a part of the woods. Enjoy what you are doing and the woods peaceful bliss and all the critters that call it home. Base your success on opportunities and sightings vs kills and you will enjoy the woods much more. Where are you hunting and are you using bow or gun?
  10. Studies, research and the printed results are often taken as gospel. The moon charts are a perfect example. Some go by the moon charts and swear by them because they have seen the similar results with the moon pattern year after year. While others will say it has nothing to do with any rut predictions and have other "experts" prove it with their printed results. We can argue both sides until we are feed up. Most will not change their opinion due to what they see in the woods. Confirming or denying what ever studies they want to prove or disprove. Many of us know that deer are individuals and can find a deer that disproves any theory because the laws of nature are unbound and can change with many factors. My point is this: O'Reilly did not do this to put the black men down, he is doing a wakeup call at the risk of his job. The black community needs to address this with the family. Unfortunately they will probably ignore this and label him as a racist.
  11. The real issue is parenting. Which was my point. I grew up with many races and the ones with a good family where good people regardless of color. Most of them had a father figure to help. The troubled kids (Black or white.) always came from broken homes. Most ended up in jail or dead. I agree the TV programs promoting gangster type behavior does not help, especially when they are look upon as hero's. The access to drugs has gotten out of control especially heavy drugs adding to the issues they face.
  12. Fins to Feathers in Hicksville. Rich is great! I think my mount is just about ready, the anticipation!
  13. WOW amazing 1 real beauty and a brute! (Father and son?) Good luck with them, buddy pal. Need help just pm me friend, lol. That is awesome, glad he is passing his genes. OK now my blood is pumping for the season, 4 weeks! Again, WOW!!!
  14. My lifetime license was printed on camo paper, my buddy has yellow. I do not think it will be an issue because of the dates printed. This is not an isolated incident and I think many will have yellow instead of the new camo. I believe the DEC will know about this.
  15. Very cool, I saw 3 bucks last night, 2 7pt and a bunch of doe, too bad they where all off the property. All had shed their velvet.
