  1. ICS hunter pro work good for me, new 340's. They penetrate well out to 50+ yards.
  2. I know if I was hunting it would get shot! LOL That is too funny!
  3. I am getting really hungry! Love them in Italian dressing 3-4 hours works for me. Bacon sounds good!
  4. I think my tracking last year helped on dry ground this year that's for sure. This is one of the most exciting ways to hunt. Many of my encounters where from tracking the day before and then setting up an ambush the next day. The ambush was set up perfect many times yet I still seemed to miss, drove me nuts! Then I started to shoot my gun a lot! Helped my hunting big time! But running down a buck is still a goal I have yet to achieve. Loved reading about your track job Joe! http://www.nyantler-outdoors.com/servello-buck.html Awesome story and amazing Buck! One thing is for sure, getting on a big track is adrenaline filled, heart pumping anticipation, nothing like it!

    Big Bear

    Looks and smells fishy.
  6. 25 mph of steady wind would be hard but this is coming from someone who hunted the day before hurricane Sandy hit. Plain and simple if I have the time to be in the woods I am going, wind, rain, cold, snow bring it on! That's what good clothes are for! 20-25 mph gusty winds and I believe deer do shut down. They don't like all that tree and branch movement it prevents them from seeing predators. If it is that bad on LI, I will usually pass. Sometimes no matter what the weather is doing, I am hunting. I love hunting bad weather! Good time to scout during the season.
  7. One thing I realized a long time ago(Due to missing deer.) is that if you have very few opportunities, make the most of them by being a marksmen with your weapon. It will make that part of hunting second nature and increase your success rate. I have a friend who will only bench shoot his 30-06 and will not shoot off hand. Drives me crazy! Know where your bullet will hit from 5 ft out to as far as you are capable and know your limits. (I can't shoot past 80 yards with my open sight 44 Mag.) . It sounds like you hit him high, might have passed through without hitting any vitals or missed. I would look for any close cover and check water sources, make sure you REALLY check the thick stuff and any bedding areas. Offhand shooting is not easy, if you can when still hunting, stop where you can sit or lean up against a tree. One knee works and helps steady your arm in a quick situation. A shooting stick could make the difference. Make sure you check the entire gun and scope mounts for tightness or have a gunsmith check it. If the gun is not shooting consistent on the bench then something is wrong. Good luck Back Woods Hunter and thanks for sharing. I loved your story!
  8. Very nice, congrats! Hope you get the big one to round off a great season! Good Luck!
  9. Very Nice! Congrats, a true wonder of nature!
  10. Nice buck! WoW a true giant! Congrats! What a Brute!
  11. That's for sure. Possible. If that's the case he will be caught. Does not sound like it but who knows... Time will tell. Identify your target and place your shot!
  12. Great post with many great ideas. I would ask him to meet and discuss it further. ( "Joe I was wondering if I could talk to you about the land by our house? I would like to discuss your offer from the other day.") Explain your frustration with a small apology stating why trespassers are annoying and why you had a bit of an attitude towards him on that day, frustration works for me as the excuse. If you and the land owner are willing to allow him use of the property, I bet your trespassing issues will become minor. Plus that is someone who CAN patrol while you are at work or away. And believe me if anyone at any times goes to his NEW hunting grounds, well he will check it out and who better to inspect trespassers? Good neighbors are irreplaceable and invaluable. Good Luck and tread lightly, hope it all works out for you! Keep us posted, and thanks for sharing! Funny how we can all get along when we have a common objective or enemy. Turn that possible issue into a benefit! Again good luck!

    Nocturnal

Perspective is always an issue. If I see deer on my property all day and someone say they are not moving I will say they are wrong... Food, hunters, prey, moon, weather can all effect deer movement. How that will effect the deer in your area will not be the same as LI and LI will not be the same as Western NY and Western NY will not be the same as Northern ADK. I have patterns and rutting behavior that is vastly differant from one town to another. (I think one hot doe can change everything!) One thing is for certian, they can change any time and unpredictablitly is one factor that makes hunting so interesting!!! If they did the same thing every day it would not be much of a hunt! Hope you can figure out and pattern your deer like WNYBuckHunter and his partner did, CONGRATS. Great job!
  14. Not everyone can butcher a deer in the garage. It is a small fee to have it butchered. Processors can take in many deer this is why you see this. Those deer outside would be done quick. I would use them, no problem. This is part of hunting, reality check! PS: Most people are not butchers and have no knowledge how to process a deer, should they stop hunting because of this?
  15. Survival should be taught in schools where the largest bunch of anti hunters influence kids. This would be a course in the outdoors with hunting, fishing, trapping and general navagation and survival skills. Unfortunatly these types of programs are frowned upon by the very institutions that we pay for with our taxes.
  16. Thanks Graybeard. Always like to have extra gear and clothes esp at a discount!

    Nocturnal

Warm weather does not help and not all area's have enough hunters to "push" deer. With a warm winter coat on I would not move in this heat. Add a full moon and high winds during the day and I can see why they would move more at night during this time period. Stay the course, they will move more as it gets colder. Keep in mind they could be with a doe that is not moving that much. Rut is on!!!
  18. I have found that shooting the bow often helps with my offhand rifle shooting. I try to keep wieght down when hunting so I don't use a stick. I have a friend that can shoot great from a bench but will never even practice offhand at the range, drives me crazy. One thing that has helped my hunting is becoming as good of a shot that I can be. You sometimes never get a second chance.
  19. Bring a wire tie with you and just fill it out and attatch it... For anyone who has never tagged a deer, bring a zipplock bag to put the tag in. Know the town, WMU and date and fill them when you recover the animal.
  20. Good job! Nice work. Easy to say you should have done this or that, we where not in the situation.
