  1. Again not trying to bash and I know deer have different reactions to what is going on in there woods. Just saying is this how future hunters will scout. Look at Deer and deer hunting Drury outdoors, they basically know the location and path that every deer takes and have it logged. Not really hunting when you can track them from bed to feed to where they look for doe is my point. How many cams is too much. If I did put out 200 cams and was able to take a monster buck from the area does that mean I earned it or did the cams do the work for me? Just wondering how much is to much? Do you think I would hunt the same way if I knew a deer crossed an area most days at spot B? Kind of makes the decision of where to hunt much less of and instinct and knowledge vs what the cams show me where I should be. Sorry Bowguy1 did not mean to hijack your thread, I will leave it at that.
  2. NO but I will at one point, I think. I only have 137 cams set up now, I have 50 more to go. If you hike Moose River I will have you on film! Not really but is this the way people will scout in the future as cams become cheaper? No hunting needed just go to cam # 47 a half hour before dark to kill a 12 pt buck we named DORKY because he is so easy to kill? (Now that we have him on film!) Seems like cheating to me but they are fun! One day I I will play with them but for now I will keep on hunting and scouting at the same time. Seems like more fun NOT knowing what is out in the woods. JMO Not trying to bash cam users I just wonder if they will get out of control when they are the size of a flashlight at 10$ a piece and transmit everything over the internet.
  3. They seem to wakeup just before dark sometimes more than a hour before! A few times hunting LI I would see a family of 3 babies and a mom walking the game trails, lucky for them I do not target them unless rabid. We use to hand feed them when I was a kid out on my aunts back porch. My buddy had one as a pet, this thing was CRAZY wild! Can I pet your raccoon, Sure he said, the closer I came to the cage the more freaked out it became! Sure you can try to pet him but I was scared to death of this thing flipping out in the cage! Then he would just take the coon out by the scruff of it's neck and plop it on his shoulder, crazy!!! RIP Chris, missing you!
  4. 28.5 draw 65 lbs I am shooting ICS Hunter Pro in 400 Grain at 8.1 GPI it's a good arrow. Plenty to choose from, better ones are usually a little more expensive but not always needed.
  5. Welcome aboard, great site, glad you can join us!
  6. Congrats Rob! Best of luck with your new home! Sounds like a good move!
  7. My buddy sets up fences and has deer come up to him often, same happens to my parents when they work outside. I think the abundance of food at this time of the year has something to do with it along with the fact that they have not been hunted for a few months. I do not hear of older bucks doing this that often though!
  8. Great tips! Keep us posted on how you set your stands up and how well it worked out, best of luck to you this season!

    Saranac Lake

We camped at site 80. Nice beach area with great parking if you do not want your boat getting dinged up by the rocks. It was a very slow few days of fishing, we caught maybe 60+ fish for the 4 days with thousands of casts between 8 guys. Even the rainy day was slow, but it was nice just to get away!
  10. It is a very good educational show that's for sure. I use to watch all the time, one of my favorites.
  11. Just a few pics and video from our recent trip to NJ. The Pink Flamingo was funny! Good times! Sorry so shaky but the dam GoPro is tiny! I did not do much editing and just threw this together over the weekend. A lot of fun with new and old friends! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QULETmzOCI
  12. Like the video. I would end it a little different like Paula said. Showing some of the amazing things you find at the end and how you pull yourself out of a bad day by going back to nature is a great thing, show more of it and have a positive message at the end will always help inspire your audience. Your Father and Grandfather where very wise and smart men versed in nature, glad to see them pass along there love for the outdoors! Showing some of what they taught you and how you enjoy the woods is a awesome thing, keep up the good work! Love your videos!

    Saranac Lake

Some pics from Saranac 2 weeks ago. Good time camping with some sunny weather. The pike was one of the bigger fish, about 6 lbs, nothing huge but a decent fish. All fish where released.
  14. Never did I ever think a sewing thread would interest me, lol. Very cool info! Thanks!
  15. So true but when you shoot the way we are talking about all the time you really do not think about which pin and where you just do it same as putting the pin on a spot. My 30 yard shot is about 1.3 inches low on the target with my 35 pin. I do it so often target shooting that its second nature now. Difference between an adjustable and a fixed bow sight.
  16. Some things I have used over the years. Hike up high early and still hunt/stalking downhill while inspecting for sign. If you have a good area with deer this is a great way to hunt and you can do it very slowly if you can get in undetected. Get a good pair of binoculars they will help when scanning the end or beginning of rivers, swamps and any other thick pinch points deer use to cross or bed in including ridge tops and sides. Find the swamps, deer like swamps for cover, security and food. Rivers and streams hold food deer like check them good. October or later check for beechnut and other mast crops in the higher elevations. Scrapes and rubs are great to key in on early season but during rut look for the doe. Learn how to talk to deer, I can not explain how much this and tracking has helped me advance in my personal knowledge of deer. This is a great way to spot deer when the season is off or you want to see if deer are in a swamp and jump them out. Peter Fiduccia is da man! Love his videos! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rrOWSZOCq8 This next one is great to pull in doe, I have used it many times still hunting and had doe as close as 4-5 ft before spotting me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9Udgb_imWM If we get snow get out and follow the first track you find and see where it takes you. Usually it will cross other tracks and then you found a X to put on the GPS. I tend to find doe with young stay in the lower land, valleys and swamp areas more than bucks that like the higher elevation. Bucks swagger and have a wider track than doe that walk a thin line. Track a buck can tell you his size, rough weight and antler width if your lucky. Benoit videos are great along with the Salerno brothers for great deer hunting info. Cover as much area as possible when scouting, deer know the sound of human hikers is different than hunters and see it as less of a threat but will still run usually unless they freeze and let you pass. Find the Doe! It's as simple as finding the core area of the doe and making sure you are in it during rut because that is where the bucks will be looking for them. If you find no sign go to a different area, don't waist to much time scouting an area with no sign. Number one tip is enjoy your time in these remote locations where many other hunters say no deer roam and don't give up, ever! Be safe and prepared, these woods can be a beautiful landscape that can turn into a unforgiving place of isolation and calamity when things go bad. I can promise you this: If you get a deer it will be an experience of a lifetime! Remember to thank your prey for all that it has given you! Congrats on your quest for an ADK deer, I wish you the best of luck and hope you get lucky this year!
  17. Been hunting Moose River Plains/Blue Ridge/West Canadian Lakes area since 1991 on and off. Since I got lucky in 2000 my buddies only want to hunt this remote area. Take it as an adventure because it is some of the hardest hunting in the state with very few deer in it. I drove the entire park after 2 days of snow and only found 2 sets of doe tracks crossing the road just to give you and idea and I covered over 30 miles. More tracks found in the woods vs deer crossing the road, not that they don't but sometimes it seems to be a barrier. I have never found a clear cut, apple tree or an oak ridge in this area. I have found food sources but most of the food seems to be the new vegetation in rivers and mast crops like beach nuts. Like mentioned before food is a hard thing to key in on, it is all over the place for them. No farms or houses to key in on unless you hunt near towns which really is not deep woods. 1)Hunting lake or river edges can be good spots especially if it is a pinch point. Do not shoot any deer in water or over a body of water, in NY it is illegal as far as I know. Nothing ethically wrong with hunting these areas. Deer need water, if they are not getting enough from the vegetation they will more than likely need to drink. That can be hard to pin point also as the ADK has many rivers, small streams and swamps that can satisfy their thirst. 2) Focus on open area's is ok but concentrate on the sides, bucks tend to like thick cover that masks their movement. Be vigilant in your inspections, is the area browsed, tracks, doe or buck tracks. Swamps are a good place to find tracks along with rivers and lake edges but you will need to cover some ground. 3) Only thing I have found that I could rely on was beechnuts. Again food is very hard to pin point, they can eat at any location. Small streams and swamps tend to hold food deer like. This is my worst area of knowledge. 4) Just like people they all have personalities. Some will run a half mile at the smell of humans. Others not so much. To me they seem just as skittish as any deer not use to people or who like to avoid people. Do you plan on using bow or gun. I have not bow hunted the area in 2 years, thinking about doing a scouting/hunting trip early October. Such a nice time of the year but the vegetation is still covering much and seeing past 30-40 yards in most of my spots is impossible. Some other posts about the subject, good info! http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/23282-first-time-big-woods-hunting/page-2 http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/19997-when-the-deer-move/
  18. Simply put I think you hit the nail on the head Doc, as usual. The same people who do not want to practice with any bow would rather have guns and crossbows in bow season. You allow hunting year round already on farms why not start doing the same thing in area's you feel are overpopulated to cull deer instead of trampling all over bow season DEC? And now they use shotguns on these farms on LI. So much for a challenge. Now the challenge will be trying to get away from the gun hunters again but now during bow season. Kind of hard to do on LI considering most spots, after hiking a few miles, takes you off the DEC land.
  19. Going to miss you Deerpassion! Best of luck to you, hope the move is a good thing and you come back to say hello and keep us updated on your hunting down south!
  20. Setting the pins at the 25-35-45 etc. makes it easy for me to shoot with no "target panic" when sighting in at 10-20-30 etc. The only time I have to put the pin dead on is at any 25,35 etc range which in most shooting is not that often. I put the pin just below or high where I want to hit. Even after dry firing my bow at the R100 last weekend,(Thankfully the string was new and held together!) I was still able to manage a 1005 for 2 days of shooting, took me a few shots to get the peep lined up again and I was a little on edge after 1 hour sleep the night before. Fun weekend. 464 N. American and 541 S. African I guess I like loolipop shooting because like stated before you are not covering the target unless they are 25,35 etc yards which I find in most shooting is rare and because it is rare when I have to do it I do not panic because it's not done that way often as having them on 20-30-40 50 etc.
  21. Thanks for the post Rob, she summed it up pretty clear.
  22. Some nice bass!!! Sounds like a great day and a nice trade! 3lbs is always fun but 4lbs is a real good time!!!
  23. Try as many as you can, get the one that "feels right". So many good bows out today. Elite as mentioned is a very nice shooting bow, Mathews makes great bows, Bowtech, Hoyt the list goes on but simply put you should get one that feels good. Easy of draw, good back wall and easy shooting and let-off are some of the things I look for. Good luck, let us know which one you choose.
